Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fashion Drawing and Design: A Practical Manual for Art Students and Others The modes may not be those of the very latest moment, but if they were chosen to-day, the fashions sometimes change so rapidly that by the time the book is safely through the printer's hands, much may have altered by Dame Fashion's decree. The aim of the book, however, is not vainly to record of fashions at any particular time, but to explain and illustrate the various methods and styles of drawing in general use for recording dresses of different types, with their manifold detail accessories, and it is hoped that a representative review on these lines has been brought together. So many young people are seeking a career and wish to take up Fashion Drawing, that a book dealing with the subject in all its branches will be, I h0pe, of practical assistance, though nothing can take the place of intensive personal study and practice. There are some classes in connection with Schools of Art, but these are very few, and several have closed down. I do not quite know the reason, but principally, I think, the fashion students are discouraged by the master, who usually affects to despise fashion drawing and tells the students he Wishes them to go in for real art, instead of raising the standard and showing them how much good drawing is essential, and that most of the celebrated artists did not disdain any kind of painting, even the signs of coaching inns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drawing and Designing: In a Series of Lessons Mr. Charles G. Leland, in his work on "Practical Education," distinctly insists on the utility, indeed the paramount importance, of a sound and practical rudimentary training, whether in connection with elementary or more advanced technical education. This is becoming daily and increasingly apparent to those who, in their care and training of the young of both sexes, are guided by reason and common sense. Failing such a basis, it is obvious that no process of later cramming is likely to produce equally successful and permanently beneficial results. This series of manuals on "The Minor Arts and Industries" is designed on the lines thus laid down. It will be found that each handbook presents the subject with which it deals in a thoroughly popular and practical manner; that the lessons carry the student on his road step by step from the simplest elements to the point where the most advanced works fitly find their place in his course of study; in short, the greatest pains have been taken to insure a thorough mastery of the rudiments of each subject, and so clearly to state each lesson, illustrating it where necessary by plans and drawings, that even very young children may be interested in and trained to practical work. On similar grounds the self-taught student will find these manuals an invaluable aid to his studies. The present volume on "Drawing and Designing," forms a fitting introduction to such a series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drawing and Design: A Class d104-Book for Beginners As these forms are simpler, and easier to draw than those of which the' letters are com posed, it may be asked where is the difficulty and what constitutes the lesson? Thedificulty is caused solely by the fact that the pupil has not learned by heart these simple forms as he has already learned the more difficult forms of the letters. When he has brought practice and the exercise of his memory, to bear on these, to him, newer forms until he sees and knows them with the same certainty as the letters, the one difficulty is mastered. The lesson is to show lines in harmony with the arbitrary forms of the letters, and pleasing arrangements of these lines, in the drawing of which the pupil will perfect his memory of them and, learning to see their value as elements for design, be led on to make other combinations - his own designs - and thus early exercise his inventive faculty. In some schools the upright written letters are taught instead of the usual slanting ones here adopted. These may be substituted if preferred. He survived both world wars, the rise of National Socialism in Germany, and permanent exile in a new land, but nothing halted his tireless and brilliant design work. Classic Book Jackets tells Salter's story and describes the innovative thinking he brought to his clients and students (including his designation of seven jacket types that are still valid today). It includes more than two hundred reproductions of his finest works as well as a complete catalog of his jackets, designs, and lettering jobs for the book trade."--BOOK JACKET.
