Download or read book Secret Science written by Ulf Schmidt and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early 1990s, allegations that servicemen had been duped into taking part in trials with toxic agents at top-secret Allied research facilities throughout the twentieth century featured with ever greater frequency in the media. In Britain, a whole army of over 21,000 soldiers had participated in secret experiments between 1939 and 1989. Some remembered their stay as harmless, but there were many for whom the experience had been all but pleasant, sometimes harmful, and in isolated cases deadly. Secret Science traces, for the first time, the history of chemical and biological weapons research by the former Allied powers, particularly in Britain, the United States, and Canada. It charts the ethical trajectory and culture of military science, from its initial development in response to Germany's first use of chemical weapons in the First World War to the ongoing attempts by the international community to ban these types of weapons once and for all. It asks whether Allied and especially British warfare trials were ethical, safe, and justified within the prevailing conditions and values of the time. By doing so, it helps to explain the complex dynamics in top-secret Allied research establishments: the desire and ability of the chemical and biological warfare corps, largely comprised of military officials, scientists, and expert civil servants, to construct and identify a never-ending stream of national security threats which served as flexible justification strategies for the allocation of enormous resources to conducting experimental research with some of the most deadly agents known to man. Secret Science offers a nuanced, non-judgemental analysis of the contributions made by servicemen, scientists, and civil servants to military research in Britain and elsewhere, not as passive, helpless victims 'without voices', or as laboratory and desk perpetrators 'without a conscience', but as history's actors and agents of their own destiny. As such it also makes an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on the history and culture of memory.

Book Synopsis Corpses in Belgian Anatomy, 1860–1914 by : Tinne Claes
Download or read book Corpses in Belgian Anatomy, 1860–1914 written by Tinne Claes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the thousands of corpses that ended up in the hands of anatomists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Composed as a travel story from the point of view of the cadaver, this study offers a full-blown cultural history of death and dissection, with insights that easily go beyond the history of anatomy and the specific case of Belgium. From acquisition to disposal, the trajectories of the corpse changed under the influence of social policies, ideological tensions, religious sensitivities, cultures of death and broader changes in the field of medical ethics. Anatomists increasingly had to reconcile their ways with the diverse meanings that the dead body held. To a certain extent, as this book argues, they started to treat the corpse as subject rather than object. Interweaving broad historical evolutions with detailed case studies, this book offers unique insights into a field dominated by Anglo-American perspectives, evaluating the similarities and differences within other European contexts.

Book Synopsis Production at the leading edge of technology by : Jens Peter Wulfsberg
Download or read book Production at the leading edge of technology written by Jens Peter Wulfsberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the Congress will be leading-edge manufacturing processes. Topics include manufacturing at extreme speed, size, accuracy, methodology, use of resources, interdisciplinarity and more. Contributions from production and industrial engineering are welcome. Challenges from the areas of manufacturing, machines and production systems will be addressed. Production research constantly pushes the boundaries of what is feasible. The Congress "Production at the leading edge of technology" will highlight production processes that are advancing into areas that until recently were considered unfeasible, also in terms of methodology, use of resources and interdisciplinarity. But where does the search for new limits lead? Which limitations do we still have to overcome, which ones do we not want to overcome? The aim of the German-speaking colloquium is to establish connections between the research locations and to intensify the overall transfer of results and experience with industrial users.
Book Synopsis Basics of Religious Education by : Martin Rothgangel
Download or read book Basics of Religious Education written by Martin Rothgangel and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2014 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an introduction to all questions of teaching Religious Education as a school subject and as an academic discipline related to this subject. The chapters cover most of the aspects that religion teachers have to face in their work, as well as the theoretical background necessary for this task. The volume is a textbook for students and teachers of religious education, be it in school or in an academic context, who are looking for reliable information on this field. The book has proven its usefulness in German speaking countries. This volume is the English translation of the German Compendium of Religious Education (edited by Gottfried Adam and Rainer Lachmann). The present English version is based on the 2012 edition which aims for a most current representation of the field. The background of the book is Protestant but its outlook is clearly ecumenical, and questions of interreligious education are considered in many of the chapters. The compendium continues to be widely used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - as an introduction to the field and as a handbook for students who are preparing for their final exams. The English edition makes this compendium available to students and colleagues in other countries.
Book Synopsis Studies in Global Animal Law by : Anne Peters
Download or read book Studies in Global Animal Law written by Anne Peters and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book contains 13 contributions on global animal law, preceded by an introduction which explains key concepts and methods. Global Animal Law refers to the sum of legal rules and principles (both state-made and non-state-made) governing the interaction between humans and other animals, on a domestic, local, regional, and international level. Global animal law is the response to the mismatch between almost exclusively national animal-related legislation on the one hand, and the global dimension of the animal issue on the other hand. The chapters lay some historical foundations in the ius naturae et gentium, examine various aspects of how national and international law traditionally deals with animals as commodity; and finally suggest new legal concepts and protective strategies. The book shows numerous entry points for animal issues in international law and at the same time shifts the focus and scope of inquiry.
