Book excerpt: Crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) measurements were made 100 üm behind the crack tip on standard three-point bend specimens using a laser-based interferometric technique. Four materials (SAE-01 steel, 4340 steel, HY-100 steel, and tungsten) were tested at loading rates ranging from quasi-static (K ? 1 MPa• m1⁄2/s) to dynamic (K ? 106 MPa • m1⁄2/s).

This book was released on 1992 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASTM Committee E-24 on Fracture has recently standardized the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) measurement method. Three major differences between the ASTM E 1290-89 method and British Standard BS5762:1979 are outlined, and the influence of these differences on the critical crack initiation CTOD value is studied. The study is based on a typical fatigue crack and slow crack growth front profile. A difference of up to 6% in the CTOD values between the two standards, irrespective of the slow crack growth size, was found in the present study. However, a marginal ditterence of only 2% in the initiation CTOD value could be observed for the slow crack growth situation considered.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey is presented of current methods of fracture toughness testing that are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. General principles are discussed in relation to the basic two-dimensional crack stress field model and in relation to real three-dimensional specimens. The designs and necessary dimensions of specimens for mixed mode and opening mode (plane strain) crack toughness measurement are considered in detail. Methods of test instrumentation and procedure are described. Expressions for the calculation of crack toughness values are given for the common types of specimens.

Download or read book Engineering Aspects of Crack-Tip Opening Displacement Fracture Toughness Testing written by ST. Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) fracture behavior of four pressure vessel steels and one ship steel has been conducted. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the fracture behavior of the steels, to study the effects of CTOD testing variables, to examine various methods of evaluating test records, and to study the relationships among several fracture toughness parameters. The five steels studied, A508, A533, A516, A517, and A131, (Unified Numbering System [UNS] K12766, K12539, K02700, K11856, and K02102) had yield strengths from 240 to 750 MPa. In addition, three specimen sizes of the A533 and A516 steels were studied.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard methods of estimating the average size of the slow crack growth region as described in BS 5762 (Crack Opening Displacement (COD)) and ASTM E 1290 (Test Method for Crack-Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Fracture Toughness Measurement) are cumbersome, painstaking, time consuming, and dependent on several factors; e.g., section thickness, the nature of crack front profile, and the number of measurements. Often errors are introduced in determining the average crack size which in turn affect the determination of critical CTOD value.

Download or read book Determination of Fracture Toughness by CTOD Resistance Curve Method written by SK. Putatunda and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness ?i of AISI 4340 steel in the hardened and tempered condition has been determined by the multiple-specimen CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) resistance curve method. This fracture toughness ?i value has been compared with the JIc fracture toughness also obtained by the multiple-specimen JR curve technique. The investigation also examines the effect of specimen size, thickness, and width on ?i and ?R curve behavior. The effect of these parameters on the constraint factor m in the J-? relationship has also been examined. Compact tension specimens with TL orientation were used. All specimens satisfied ASTM E 813 standard size requirements.

This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ELFNET Book on Failure Mechanisms, Testing Methods, and Quality Issues of Lead-Free Solder Interconnects is the work of the European network ELFNET which was founded by the European Commission in the 6th Framework Programme. It brings together contributions from the leading European experts in lead-free soldering. The limited validity of testing methods originating from tin-lead solder was a major point of concern in ELFNET members' discussions. As a result, the network's reliability group decided to bring together the material properties of lead-free solders, as well as the basics of material science, and to discuss their influence on the procedures for accelerated testing. This has led to a matrix of failure mechanisms and their activation and, as a result, to a comprehensive coverage of the scientific background and its applications in reliability testing of lead-free solder joints. The ELFNET Book on Failure Mechanisms, Testing Methods, and Quality Issues of Lead-Free Solder Interconnects is written for scientists, engineers and researchers involved with lead-free electronics.
Book Synopsis Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Testing Method for Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) Toughness of Steel Welds with Particular Reference to Local Inhomogeneity by : M. Toyoda
Download or read book Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) Testing Method for Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) Toughness of Steel Welds with Particular Reference to Local Inhomogeneity written by M. Toyoda and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the multi-passed weld heat-affected zone (HAZ), the occurrence of mechanical and metallurgical heterogeneity is inevitable. For the fracture toughness evaluation of the steel weld HAZ, the effect of the inhomogeneity shall be considered, particularly in relation to determination of the appropriate testing procedures such as the extraction of test specimens from welded joints. In the weld HAZ of the recently developed high strength steels, the occurrence of the local brittle zones (LBZs) and the local hard/soft zones is often observed. The effect of local heterogeneity is an important problem to be solved to clarify the testing methods and understand the significance of toughness obtained by a specific toughness testing method. In this paper, two kinds of heterogeneity, that is, heterogeneity in toughness and strength mismatch, will be considered. The toughness value is significantly dependent on the specimen types and the extraction method of specimen from the multi-passed welded joints, that is, the size of LBZs existing in the vicinity of the crack tip is one of the dominant controlling factors. The size effect of LBZs on the scattering of toughness is discussed based on the weakest link model (WLM). Moreover, the mechanical heterogeneity, such as the distribution of strength in HAZ, is a considerably important factor controlling the fracture toughness. Mechanical inhomogeneity influences not only the deformation behaviors in the vicinity of crack tip, that is, the evaluation of toughness parameter, but also the critical toughness value. In this paper, both effects are proved by the experimental results, and discussions have been conducted on the appropriate evaluation methods for CTOD testing of steel weld HAZs with considering the effect of the local mechanical heterogeneity.
