Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Novels, Vol. 1 It has happened to few naval officers like the late Captain Marryat, the gifted author of the following story, to distinguish themselves professionally so much, and to acquire such eminence in literature as he did, - an eminence which will endure as long as genius, wit, and humour are appreciated among us. Captain Marryat was born July 10, 1792, and entered the navy September 23, 1806, as a first-class boy on board the Imperieuse, 44 guns, and had the honour to assist in the many gallant actions performed by the justly renowned Lord Cochrane. During this period of service, which lasted till the 18th October, 1809, he was in upwards of fifty engagements, in which many armed vessels, as well as merchantmen, were cut out, on the coast of France and in the Mediterranean. Within one month he was present at the capture of three French national transports and twelve merchant vessels, and at the demolition of the Fort Roquette, at the entrance of the Arcasson, he served in the boats, when they sustained a loss of 16 men killed and wounded, in effecting the capture of a Maltese privateer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Novels, Vol. 1 of 1: N LX; Henry Masterton I opened my eyes to the light of day, on the shores of that part of the British Channel at which the narrow seas which interpose between France and England first show an inclination to spread out into the Atlantic Ocean. My father's house - Oh, what a multitude of the thrilling memories, of early years and happy dreams and gall-less pleasures rise up at the very name, mingling with the forms of the loved and dead, and the tones of sweet voices that are heard no more. My father's house was raised upon the summit of one of those high cliffs which guard the coast of Devonshire; and, sweeping round within view of the windows, was a small beautiful bay, not a league and a half in diameter, in which the blue waters of the sea collected deep and still, as if for the purpose of repose. Bold high rocks, of a similar character to that on which our dwelling was perched, flanked the bay to the east; and, on the west, a long range of sandy shores extended towards the Atlantic, sloping gradually up into green fertile hills, whose high tops, covered with rich woods of oak and beech, sheltered the calm expanse below from the wild gales that race across the wide ocean beyond. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly as global in its ambition and sweep as its subject, Franco Moretti's The Novel is a watershed event in the understanding of the first truly planetary literary form. A translated selection from the epic five-volume Italian Il Romanzo (2001-2003), The Novel's two volumes are a unified multiauthored reference work, containing more than one hundred specially commissioned essays by leading contemporary critics from around the world. Providing the first international comparative reassessment of the novel, these essential volumes reveal the form in unprecedented depth and breadth--as a great cultural, social, and human phenomenon that stretches from the ancient Greeks to today, where modernity itself is unimaginable without the genre. By viewing the novel as much more than an aesthetic form, this landmark collection demonstrates how the genre has transformed human emotions and behavior, and the very perception of reality. Historical, statistical, and formal analyses show the novel as a complex literary system, in which new forms proliferate in every period and place. Volume 1: History, Geography, and Culture, looks at the novel mostly from the outside, treating the transition from oral to written storytelling and the rise of narrative and fictionality, and covering the ancient Greek novel, the novel in premodern China, the early Spanish novel, and much else, including readings of novels from around the world. These books will be essential reading for all students and scholars of literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Novels, Vol. 1: The Bravo The author has endeavored to give his countrymen, in this book, a picture of the social system of one of the soi - dimnl republics of the other hemisphere. There has been no attempt to portray historical characters, only too fictitious in their graver dress, but simply to set forth the familiar opera tions of Venetian policy. For the justification of his like ness, after allowing for the defects of execution, he refers to the well-known work of M. Daru.
