Book excerpt: Face recognition technologies (FRTs) have many practical security-related purposes, but advocacy groups and individuals have expressed apprehensions about their use. This report highlights the high-level privacy and bias implications of FRT systems. The authors propose a heuristic with two dimensions -- consent status and comparison type -- to help determine a proposed FRT's level of privacy and accuracy. They also identify privacy and bias concerns.

Recent advancements have increased the accuracy of automated FRT resulting in increased use across a range of applications. As the use of facial recognition technology (FRT) continues to expand, it has become increasingly important to understand its use across the federal government in a comprehensive way. Law enforcement agencies' use of FRT has received increased attention from policymakers and the public. Some of the concerns raised revolve around the accuracy of the technology, including potential race-, gender-, and age-related biases; the process of collecting, retaining, and securing images contained in various facial recognition databases; public notification of the use of facial recognition and other image-capturing technology; and policies or standards governing law enforcement agencies' use of the technology. Some of these concerns have manifested in actions such as federal, state, and city efforts to prohibit or bound law enforcement agencies' use of FRT. In addition, some companies producing facial recognition software have placed new barriers to law enforcement using their technologies. This book provides an overview of federal law enforcement agencies' use of FRT, including the current status of scientific standards for its use.

Book excerpt: Facial recognition software has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few decades, with error rates decreasing significantly within the past ten years. Though this is true, conditions such as poor lighting, obstructions, and profile-only angles have continued to persist in preventing wholly accurate readings. Face Recognition in Adverse Conditions examines how the field of facial recognition takes these adverse conditions into account when designing more effective applications by discussing facial recognition under real world PIE variations, current applications, and the future of the field of facial recognition research. The work is intended for academics, engineers, and researchers specializing in the field of facial recognition.

Book excerpt: Face recognition has received substantial attention from researchers in biometrics, computer vision, pattern recognition, and cognitive psychology communities because of the increased attention being devoted to security, man-machine communication, content-based image retrieval, and image/video coding. We have proposed two automated recognition paradigms to advance face recognition technology. Three major tasks involved in face recognition systems are: (i) face detection, (ii) face modeling, and (iii) face matching. We have developed a face detection algorithm for color images in the presence of various lighting conditions as well as complex backgrounds. Our detection method first corrects the color bias by a lighting compensation technique that automatically estimates the parameters of reference white for color correction. We overcame the difficulty of detecting the low-luma and high-luma skin tones by applying a nonlinear transformation to the Y CbCr color space. Our method generates face candidates based on the spatial arrangement of detected skin patches. We constructed eye, mouth, and face boundary maps to verify each face candidate. Experimental results demonstrate successful detection of faces with different sizes, color, position, scale, orientation, 3D pose, and expression in several photo collections. 3D human face models augment the appearance-based face recognition approaches to assist face recognition under the illumination and head pose variations. For the two proposed recognition paradigms, we have designed two methods for modeling human faces based on (i) a generic 3D face model and an individual's facial measurements of shape and texture captured in the frontal view, and (ii) alignment of a semantic face graph, derived from a generic 3D face model, onto a frontal face image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facial recognition is set to fundamentally change our experience and understanding of monitoring, surveillance, and privacy. Backed by powerful industry interests, this technology is being integrated into many areas of society – from airports to shopping malls, classrooms to casinos. Despite the promise of security and efficiency, fears are growing that this technology is inherently biased, intrusive, and oppressive, with broad-ranging societal consequences. In this timely book, Neil Selwyn and Mark Andrejevic provide a critical introduction to facial recognition. Outlining its complex social history and future technical forms, as well as its conceptual and technical underpinnings, the book considers the arguments being advanced for the continued uptake of facial recognition. In assessing these developments, the book argues that we are at the cusp of a generational shift in surveillance technology that will reconfigure our expectations of anonymity in shared and public spaces. Throughout, the book addresses a deceptively simple question: do we really want to live in a world where our face is our ID? Facial Recognition is essential reading for students and scholars of media and communications studies, surveillance studies, criminology, and sociology, as well as for anyone interested in one of the defining technologies of our times.

It is clear from the rising rates of identity theft and misappropriation of services that current methods employed to identify individuals is ineffectual. The most common way people identify other individuals is via recognition of the subjects face. The speed and accuracy with which one person can identify another person is uncanny leading to the development automated facial recognition systems. The vast majority of these systems use two-dimensional (2D) images imagery to perform facial recognition with limited success. The use of 2D imagery has limitations which cannot be overcome therefore three-dimensional (3D) facial recognition systems have become the focus of study. The imaging systems used to capture 3D facial imagery is complex, expensive and requires a degree of cooperation from the subject. This paper proposes the use of older photogrammetry techniques to capture 3D facial imagery thereby eliminating the need for specialized 3D imaging equipment. In addition the camera system, once configured, does not require an operator nor does it require undo cooperation of the subject"--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with fingerprints more than a hundred years ago, there has been ongoing research in biometrics. Within the last forty years face and speaker recognition have emerged as research topics. However, as recently as a decade ago, biometrics itself did not exist as an independent field. Each of the biometric-related topics grew out of different disciplines. For example, the study of fingerprints came from forensics and pattern recognition, speaker recognition evolved from signal processing, the beginnings of face recognition were in computer vision, and privacy concerns arose from the public policy arena. One of the challenges of any new field is to state what the core ideas are that define the field in order to provide a research agenda for the field and identify key research problems. Biometrics has been grappling with this challenge since the late 1990s. With the matu ration of biometrics, the separate biometrics areas are coalescing into the new discipline of biometrics. The establishment of biometrics as a recognized field of inquiry allows the research community to identify problems that are common to biometrics in general. It is this identification of common problems that will define biometrics as a field and allow for broad advancement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Face recognition is a type of biometric software application that can identify a specific individual in a digital image by analysing and comparing patterns. A facial recognition system is a computer application capable of identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source. One of the ways to do this is by comparing selected facial features from the image and a facial database. Facial recognition systems are commonly used for security purposes but are increasingly being used in a variety of other applications. In addition to being used for security systems, establishments have found a number of other applications for facial recognition systems. Some facial recognition algorithms identify facial features by extracting landmarks, or features, from an image of the subject's face. For instance, an algorithm may analyse the relative position, size, and/or shape of the eyes, nose, cheekbones, and jaw. These features are then used to search for other images with matching features. Other algorithms normalize a gallery of face images and then compress the face data, only saving the data in the image that is useful for face recognition. A probe image is then compared with the face data. One of the earliest successful systems is based on template matching techniques applied to a set of salient facial features, providing a sort of compressed face representation. The book named Face Analysis, Modeling and Recognition Systems offers a concise and inclusive analysis of artificial face recognition domain through major areas of interest: biometrics, robotics, image databases and cognitive models. The topics in this book describe numerous novel face analysis techniques and approach many unsolved issues. It will be of special interest to academics and researchers interested in computer vision, biometrics, image processing, pattern recognition and medical diagnosis."
