Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Gauge and Narrow Gauge: A Popular Discussion of the Relative Advantages of the Standard and the Narrow Gauge for Light and Local Railroads The work of Weber here presented is wholly popular in its character, citing very few figures and facts in evidence of the statements made; but it is as far as possible from being an a priori argument - a deduction from general principles made by the mind of the author. For the work is only a popular expression of facts ascertained by observation and experience and set forth at length in other longer works of the author, addressed to the engineering profession. And perhaps no man living has taken greater pains to arrive at the facts - to learn just what the experience with light railroads of different gauges has been in Europe. It must be borne in mind that narrow-gauge railroads are not a novelty there. There is a considerable number of them more than twenty years old, including one of the very first railroads built in Belgium. The novelty is not in the roads but in the wide-spread advocacy of their narrow gauge in recent years. In Weber's list of materials and in preparing this pamplet, after naming the 55 different works examined, he cites the following investigations of his own: "Visit to and study of the Norwegian narrow-gauge roads, July, 1865. "Second visit to and study of the extended system of the Norway roads, August, 1873. "Visit to and study of the Swedish standard and narrow-gauge roads, August, 1868. "Second visit to the same roads, August, 1873. "Visit to and study of the Festiniog Railway, in July, 1870, and August, 1872. "Visit to and study of the Antwerp Ghent Railroad, August, 1872. "Many observations of the Brohlthal Railroad in several years." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrow gauge railroad arrived in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Based on the Welsh two-foot gauge, the American narrow gauge was expanded by railroad engineers to a three-foot gauge that became the standard track width for narrow gauge railroads in the United States. Maine, however, adopted the two-foot gauge that was developed by George E. Mansfield in Massachusetts. The narrow track width was ideally suited to the mountainous terrain, and the maneuverability of the trains proved highly beneficial to companies and passengers traveling to remote locations. The narrow gauge railroad served Maine for over fifty years until the early 1940s. Maine Narrow Gauge Railroads is a comprehensive pictorial record of the history of the narrow gauge railroad in Maine. From the one-hundred-twelve-mile Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad to the five-mile Kennebec Central, Maine Narrow Gauge Railroads features the toylike miniature trains of Maine as they appeared at different stages in their history. The Bridgton and Harrison Railroad, the Monson Railroad, and the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway lines are documented within, as well as the current restoration projects that are under way.

Book excerpt: Built by James Everell Henry, the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad (EB&L) is considered to be the grandest and largest logging railroad operation ever built in New England. In 1892, the mountain town of Lincoln, New Hampshire, was transformed from a struggling wilderness enclave to a thriving mill town when Henry moved his logging operation from Zealand. He built houses, a company store, sawmills, and a railroad into the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River watershed to harvest virgin spruce. Despite the departure of the last EB&L log train from Lincoln Woods by 1948, the industry's cut-and-run practices forever changed the future of land conservation in the region, prompting legislation like the Weeks Act of 1911 and the Wilderness Act of 1964. Today, nearly every trail in the Pemigewasset Wilderness follows or utilizes portions of the old EB&L Railroad bed.

Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 29. Chapters: Broad gauge, List of track gauges by size, Medium gauge railway, Minimum gauge railway, Narrow gauge railway, Standard gauge. Excerpt: A narrow gauge railway (or narrow gauge railroad) is a railway that has a track gauge narrower than the ( in) of standard gauge railways. Most existing narrow gauge railways have gauges of between () and (). Comparison of standard gauge (blue) and () gauge (red) width. The difference is 368 mm (14.5") or 34%. Typical industrial () gauge tracks seen here at the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge RailwaySince narrow gauge railways are usually built with smaller radius curves, smaller structure gauges, lighter rails, etc., they can be substantially cheaper to build, equip, and operate than standard gauge or broad gauge railways, particularly in mountainous or difficult terrain. The lower costs of narrow gauge railways mean they are often built to serve industries and communities where the traffic potential would not justify the cost of building a standard or broad gauge line. Narrow gauge railways also have specialized use in mines and other environments where a very small structure gauge makes a very small loading gauge necessary. On the other hand, standard gauge or broad gauge railways generally have a greater haulage capacity and allow greater speeds than narrow gauge systems. Historically, many narrow gauge railways were built as part of specific industrial enterprises and were primarily industrial railways rather than general carriers. Some common uses for these industrial narrow gauge railways were mining, logging, construction, tunnelling, quarrying, and the conveying of agricultural products. Extensive narrow gauge networks were constructed in many parts of the world for these purposes. For example, mountain logging operations in the 19th century often used narrow gauge railways to...
