Book excerpt: In the Riding Mountain Experimental Forest Area of south-west Manitoba, stands of 100-year-old mixed white spruce and aspen were partially cut in 1953-55 and scarified, leaving treatments that retained from 14 to 100 percent of total stand basal area. This report describes the composition of the stands, based on measurements of 88 permanent sample plots before and after cutting and in 1992. Stand development is described in terms of mortality and growth of the residual stands (including advance growth), hardwood reproduction and softwood regeneration on undisturbed seedbeds, and softwood regeneration on scarified strips within the plots. Options for renewing mature mixedwood stands are also discussed.

Book excerpt: In 1951-52, 121 permanent sample plots were established at 16 locations in mixed stands of white spruce and trembling aspen, which had undergone partial cutting that had removed the largest white spruce. This report describes a study that assessed the growth rates and productivity of those stands, with emphasis on white spruce. The stands were re-examined in 1962 and 1993, with the additional goals of determining whether a similar system of partial cutting would ensure future white spruce harvests, and of monitoring and explaining mortality dynamics in those partially cut stands. Information recorded at each site included a complete tally of all trees by species in diameter classes, increment borings to determine growth, ring counts to determine age, height and diameter measurements for species other than white spruce, and a tally of dead white spruce based on external signs. A multiple regression model was developed to predict spruce merchantable volume yield for similar stands.
