Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone from engineers, electrical contractors, inspectors, electricians, and instructors of the Code have anticipated the arrival of this book. The large workbook format allows a masterful blending of valuable Design Tips, NEC Loops, Examples, Quick Calcs, and effective illustrations with authoritative Code references. Because of the abundant amount of detailed information included, it is the most comprehensive design book of its kind. Stallcup's® Electrical Design book explains the purpose of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and more particularly, its use as it applies to the design and installation of electrical wiring systems and equipment. While the substance of design is found in the National Electrical Code, the art of the design is found in the applicability of that same National Electrical Code. With the advancement of today's technology and ever-increasing liabilities, effective electrical design must now, more than ever, consider the use of certified products, energy conservation, economy vs. quality, anticipated load growth, local codes, special applications of electrical equipment, and the use and interpretation of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards that relate to special areas, etc. For better understanding and interpretation of these advancements, considerable effort has been made by the author to condense the more complicated rules pertaining to the design, installation, and selection of wiring methods and equipment. For the convenience of the reader, the Electrical Design not only contains discussions and explanations of Code rules, but also includes detailed illustrations and sample calculations that will help tremendously in understanding and becoming proficient in the application of the National Electrical Code. The Electrical Design also points out common industry problems and shows in detail the proper procedures and techniques to use in order to ensure proper code compliance. Design Tips, Calculation Tips, and guidelines for "rule of thumb" methods for instances where a fast and approximate design answer is needed are also provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first cross-linguistic study of clausal negation based on an extensive and systematic language sample. Methodological issues, especially sampling, are discussed at length. Standard negation – the basic structural means languages have for negating declarative verbal main clauses – is typologized from a new perspective, paying attention to structural differences between affirmatives and negatives. In symmetric negation affirmative and negative structures show no differences except for the presence of the negative marker(s), whereas in asymmetric negation there are further structural differences, i.e. asymmetries. A distinction is made between constructional and paradigmatic asymmetry; in the former the addition of the negative marker(s) is accompanied by further structural differences in comparison to the corresponding affirmative, and in the latter the correspondences between the members of (verbal etc.) paradigms used in affirmatives and negatives are not one-to-one. Cross-cutting the constructional-paradigmatic distinction, asymmetric negation can be further divided into subtypes according to the nature of the asymmetry. Standard negation structures found in the 297 sample languages are exemplified and discussed in detail. The frequencies of the different types and some typological correlations are also examined. Functional motivations are proposed for the structural types – symmetric negatives are language-internally analogous to the linguistic structure of the affirmative and asymmetric negatives are language-externally analogous to different asymmetries between affirmation and negation on the functional level. Relevant diachronic issues are also discussed. The book is of interest to language typologists, descriptive linguists and to all linguists interested in negation.

Book excerpt: A renowned cognitive neuroscientist?s fascinating and highly informative account of how the brain acquires reading How can a few black marks on a white page evoke an entire universe of sounds and meanings? In this riveting investigation, Stanislas Dehaene provides an accessible account of the brain circuitry of reading and explores what he calls the ?reading paradox?: Our cortex is the product of millions of years of evolution in a world without writing, so how did it adapt to recognize words? Reading in the Brain describes pioneering research on how we process language, revealing the hidden logic of spelling and the existence of powerful unconscious mechanisms for decoding words of any size, case, or font. Dehaene?s research will fascinate not only readers interested in science and culture, but also educators concerned with debates on how we learn to read, and who wrestle with pathologies such as dyslexia. Like Steven Pinker, Dehaene argues that the mind is not a blank slate: Writing systems across all cultures rely on the same brain circuits, and reading is only possible insofar as it fits within the limits of a primate brain. Setting cutting-edge science in the context of cultural debate, Reading in the Brain is an unparalleled guide to a uniquely human ability.

Book excerpt: This volume is the first in what hopefully will be a growing set of edited volumes and monographs concerning Niger-Congo comparative studies. This first volume addresses matters that are relevant to the entire East Benue-Congo family as well as the particular branches Kainji, Plateau, and Bantoid. In the case of Bantoid, the particular focus is on Grassfields and the Grassfields-Bantu borderland, though other Bantoid subgroups are referenced. The potential topics for comparative studies among these languages are numerous, but this volume is dedicated to presentations on nominal affixes, third person pronouns, and verbal extensions. A forthcoming volume will provide some results of reconstructions and lexicostatistics in Cross River, exploratory reconstructions in Southern Jukunoid, and reconstructions in Ekoid-Mbe and Mambiloid.
