With the aid of Felina, the catgirl, Mallory and Carruthers investigate clubs and lairs that only seem to exist on this one night of the year. His hunt takes him to Creepy Conrad's Cut-Rate All-Night Mortuary, where he questions the living and the dead; to the Annual Zombies' Ball, to learn more about the undead; to the Hills of Home Cemetery, where the vampire sleeps by day; and to Battery Park, where all of Manhattan's bats come to feed and sleep. Along the way he meets a few old friends and enemies, and a host of strange new inhabitants of this otherworldly Manhattan. Locked in an intriguing battle of wits with the millennia-old vampire, Mallory has until dawn if he is to save his trusted partner.

Book excerpt: When his wife is murdered and his daughter abducted, Dmitri is drawn into a life of violence and crime. Alone in the Albanian mountains, Dmitri becomes a skilled criminal but his actions uncover a secret that force him to kidnap another man’s child. Set in Albania and Greece, this Gothic tale of love and revenge is perfect for readers of crime stories like the ‘The Godfather’. ‘The Evil Eye’ (1829) is a classic short story by the English writer Mary Shelley, famous for her best-selling novel ‘Frankenstein’. Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English author and travel writer best known for her ground-breaking Gothic novel ‘Frankenstein’ (1818). Considered one of the first true works of science-fiction, the book became an instant bestseller. It has been adapted for TV, stage, and film on many occasions, with Boris Karloff famously playing Frankenstein’s monster on screen in 1933. Other adaptations include ‘Mary Shelley's Frankenstein’ (1994) starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert De Niro and ‘Viktor Frankenstein’ (2015) starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. Shelley’s other novels include Valperga (1823), The Last Man (1826), Perkin Warbeck (1830), Lodore (1835), Falkner (1837) and the posthumously published Mathilde (1959). However, she will always be remembered as the creator of Frankenstein. The book continues to influence filmmakers, writers and popular culture to this day, inspiring and terrifying new audiences the world over.
Book Synopsis The Seabrooks by : Peter V. Speziale
Download or read book The Seabrooks written by Peter V. Speziale and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Seabrooks" is the first book in a three-part saga that I am writing. This three-part saga chronicles and depicts the Seabrook family as they struggle to maintain their position of neutrality in the Revolutionary War. The entire family, which consists of Betty, Henry, and John, is convicted to their well-entrenched views toward the war; that is that they wish for the war to end as quickly and peacefully as possible, and with the least amount of bloodshed and property damage as possible. And most important of all, they want to stay completely out of the entire affair. But they are tested by loyalists and patriots alike, and they have to resist temptations, pressures, and other factors that attempt to sway their opinions and ideologies. That is to say, both loyalists (as well as the British) and patriots want the neutralists to join their side because they both knew that it was the neutralists that held the balance of power, and thus, they held the key to victory. The Seabrooks are subjected to a series of events that test the integrity of their neutrality and their resolve to stay neutral. But eventually, a very significant event impacts the entire family and causes them to reassess their ideologies and political views in regards to the war. The saga focuses on the life of John Seabrook, who is the only son and child of Henry and Betty Seabrook. They are a strong and morally upright family, and they portray a typical and traditional family that was common during the Revolutionary War era. They are members of the roughly one third of the colonial Americans who wished to remain neutral in the war. These "neutralists," as I call them, took on a political view that emphasized not only staying uninvolved throughout the war, but they also desired a swift, bloodless, and peaceful resolution to the conflict; perhaps nowadays, one might refer to them as "pacifists."

Book excerpt: “A frightening story told with skill and cunning… strong stuff.” – Peter Straub Featuring a new introduction by Billy Martin. Deep in the bowels of the dark, desolate warehouse, the terror lay waiting. It had waited for a hundred years. It could wait a few more days. And when the boy came—so young, so blissfully ignorant of the twisted secrets he disturbed—it would embrace him with sickening perfume and breathe unspeakable horrors into his ear! SEEDS OF DEATH! Lewis knew that something in that place wanted him—wanted to crawl into his mind. It knew his innermost fears and could twist his soul with its demented whispering. But most terrifying of all was that even as he ran screaming from its grasp, he knew he would have to go back…
Book Synopsis The World's Eye by : Albert M. Potts
Download or read book The World's Eye written by Albert M. Potts and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek vases and Peruvian bottles, Chinese bronzes and African masks, Tel Brak idols and Egyptian tomb paintings—artifacts ancient and modern reveal man's universal fascination with the eye and his awe before its mysterious powers. In this wide-ranging and richly illustrated essay Albert M. Potts considers the special properties the human mind has ascribed to the eye over the millenia and seeks out its peculiar significance as symbol. Amulets against the Evil Eye persist today in nearly every part of the world. Almost as pervasive is the conception of the Good Eye, itself used as a protective amulet. The Eye of Horus, for example, was one of the holiest symbols of the ancient Egyptian religion, and its descendants can still be found in the Mediterranean basin. Using artifacts and texts, the folklore of our own times, and aspects of the unconscious revealed by Jungian psychology, Potts reveals the diverse forms and meanings of this powerful symbol.
