Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stalk-Eyed Crustacea: Of British Guiana, West Indies, and Bermuda This hand-list of the Stalk-Eyed Crustacea of the western tropical and subtropical Atlantic about the West Indian Islands, of these Islands, of the muddy shore and fresh water of British Guiana, and of the fresh water of tropical America, is the result of an attempt to bring together, for the use of collectors, the description, already published in many monographs and periodicals by such naturalists as H. Milne Edwards, Dana, Stimpson, Bell, Sidney Smith, A. Milne Edwards, Kingsley, Miers, Henderson, Spence Bate, Rathbun, Brooks, and many others whose names are mentioned in the text, of these interesting animals. The name of the naturalist is placed opposite the name under which the crustacean has been described by him. The classification followed is that of H. Milne Edwards for the larger divisions of the two Orders and for the tribes of the Brachyura, otherwise the classification of the latter is that of Mr. E. J. Miers and Mr. J. S. Kingsley; excluding the fresh-water crabs properly so called, the arrangement followed being that of Miss M. J. Rathbun, who has thrown much light on the family, and to whom I take this opportunity of expressing my thanks for the assistance given me; of the Anomoura, that of Professor Henderson and A. Milne Edwards; and of the Macroura, that of Mr. Spence Bate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 1969 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original objective of this study was to describe the abundant but little-known freshwater and terrestrial decapod crustaceans of Dominica. However, it became apparent that even with intensive collecting it was hardly possible to reveal every species that might occur on that island. To lend completeness to the Dominican coverage and make the study useful to biologists interested in the faunas of other islands, 92 species known from all of the West Indies were included to offer a provisional handbook of the decapods that may occur naturally in reduced salinities or above the high-tide line on any of the island from Bermuda to Trinidad and throughout the Caribbean Seas.

Book Synopsis Deep-Sea Pycnogonids and Crustaceans of the Americas by : Michel E. Hendrickx

This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the deep-sea marine invertebrates, pycnogonids and crustaceans represent ecologically important and most diverse groups of species. Yet both are still poorly understood. Sampling and exploring operations off the west and east coast of the Americas has significantly increased in the last two decades. However such operations are very costly and limited in number and frequency. In countries like Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, the United States of America, and El Salvador a large effort has been made to explore the deep-sea resources and the rich diversity of the communities, resulting in a better understanding of the natural ecosystems on both coasts of America. Pycnogonids and many groups of deep-sea crustaceans have been intensively studied, from the smallest animals, like the mostly unknown benthic copepods to the largest decapods. This book presents new and updated information on various groups of deep-sea pycnogonids and crustaceans occurring off the American continent. Offering a valuable reference resource for scientists interested in this fascinating fauna, it includes review papers and new data on the deep-sea communities occurring off the USA, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Argentina, as well as in larger areas in both the East Pacific and the West Atlantic. As such it covers most of the current deep-water research in Latin America.

Book Synopsis The Eponym Dictionary of Mammals by : Bo Beolens
Download or read book The Eponym Dictionary of Mammals written by Bo Beolens and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just who was the Przewalski after whom Przewalski's horse was named? Or Husson, the eponym for the rat Hydromys hussoni? Or the Geoffroy whose name is forever linked to Geoffroy's cat? This unique reference provides a brief look at the real lives behind the scientific and vernacular mammal names one encounters in field guides, textbooks, journal articles, and other scholarly works. Arranged to mirror standard dictionaries, the more than 1,300 entries included here explain the origins of over 2,000 mammal species names. Each bio-sketch lists the scientific and common-language names of all species named after the person, outlines the individual's major contributions to mammalogy and other branches of zoology, and includes brief information about his or her mammalian namesake's distribution. The two appendixes list scientific and common names for ease of reference, and, where appropriate, individual entries include mammals commonly -- but mistakenly -- believed to be named after people. The Eponym Dictionary of Mammals is a highly readable and informative guide to the people whose names are immortalized in mammal nomenclature.
