Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essay describes the research that Faber did in order to inform his church members as to what kind of windows might be commissioned and placed in Grace Church, Lockport, where he was the resident Catholic priest. The essay is scholarly in tone and Faber goes into a great deal of detail. He was clearly delighted to be tasked with this important role as he says 'It is an unspeakable privilege to be permitted to place a memorial like this in the house of God, bringing ever new comfort and joy to hearts bereaved, and satisfaction to the donors; yes, if there is need to say it, it is an honor to be permitted to do it.' Frederick William Faber (1814 –1863) was a noted English hymn writer and theologian, who converted from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism in 1845. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood subsequently in 1847. His best-known work is Faith of Our Fathers. Nicholas Carter lives near Bristol and has been a journalist in the West Country for seventeen years. He is a member of The Sealed Knot.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stained Glass Windows: An Essay, With a Report to the Vestry on Stained Glass Windows for Grace Church, Lockport, New York The project of four years ago is no longer an insubstantial dream. Since that time eleven windows and three mosaics have been placed in Grace Church; in them all the adopted scheme has been followed, with results more and more obviously satisfactory. Although intending this pamphlet, in the first instance, simply for a guide to his own people, to lead them to a more dis criminating appreciation: the author is encouraged to hope, by many expressions from the outside, that it will, even more than the earlier Report, be of service be yond his parish; that it may perhaps stimulate elsewhere also_ a study of Church Glass, and the erection of true Church Windows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of art is inseparable from the history of color. And what a fascinating story they tell together: one that brims with an all-star cast of characters, eye-opening details, and unexpected detours through the annals of human civilization and scientific discovery. Enter critically acclaimed writer and popular journalist Victoria Finlay, who here takes readers across the globe and over the centuries on an unforgettable tour through the brilliant history of color in art. Written for newcomers to the subject and aspiring young artists alike, Finlay’s quest to uncover the origins and science of color will beguile readers of all ages with its warm and conversational style. Her rich narrative is illustrated in full color throughout with 166 major works of art—most from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Readers of this book will revel in a treasure trove of fun-filled facts and anecdotes. Were it not for Cleopatra, for instance, purple might not have become the royal color of the Western world. Without Napoleon, the black graphite pencil might never have found its way into the hands of Cézanne. Without mango-eating cows, the sunsets of Turner might have lost their shimmering glow. And were it not for the pigment cobalt blue, the halls of museums worldwide might still be filled with forged Vermeers. Red ocher, green earth, Indian yellow, lead white—no pigment from the artist’s broad and diverse palette escapes Finlay’s shrewd eye in this breathtaking exploration.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural concepts of radiance and beauty in stained glass in modern art; global exchanges between stained-glass artists in Europe and the Americas; and the transformation of stained glass from religious decoration to secular material culture. Unique features of the book include its geographic breadth, encompassing England, France, Italy, USA, and Mexico, and its inclusion of American female glassmakers. Essays consider how stained glass became an art form during this time, and show how the narrative for the figurative design drew from the Bible, mythology, history, literature, and the symbolism of the time, including popular culture such as ecology and materiality. Written for students and the general public interested in the humanities, literature, history, art history, and new media and popular culture, this book examines the visual beauty and symbolism of stained-glass windows in Europe and American cultures during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries – the modern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iron Curtain did not exist—at least not as we usually imagine it. Rather than a stark, unbroken line dividing East and West in Cold War Europe, the Iron Curtain was instead made up of distinct landscapes, many in the grip of divergent historical and cultural forces for decades, if not centuries. This book traces a genealogy of one such landscape—the woods between Czechoslovakia and West Germany—to debunk our misconceptions about the iconic partition. Yuliya Komska transports readers to the western edge of the Bohemian Forest, one of Europe’s oldest borderlands, where in the 1950s civilians set out to shape the so-called prayer wall. A chain of new and repurposed pilgrimage sites, lookout towers, and monuments, the prayer wall placed two long-standing German obsessions, forest and border, at the heart of the century’s most protracted conflict. Komska illustrates how civilians used the prayer wall to engage with and contribute to the new political and religious landscape. In the process, she relates West Germany’s quiet sylvan periphery to the tragic pitch prevalent along the Iron Curtain’s better-known segments. Steeped in archival research and rooted in nuanced interpretations of wide-ranging cultural artifacts, from vandalized religious images and tourist snapshots to poems and travelogues, The Icon Curtain pushes disciplinary boundaries and opens new perspectives on the study of borders and the Cold War alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to be published on the stained-glass art of Thomas Denny. While his name is known mainly within ecclesiastical and glass-making circles, it is likely that Denny's art is instantly recognisable to a great many more. His radiant windows in Gloucester, Durham and Hereford Cathedrals and in many churches and chapels around the UK are arguably some of the art world's best-kept secrets. Denny (b.1956) originally studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art and has translated this painterly experience into a uniquely expressive style of stained glass. His works combine the aesthetic invention of modern British forbears such as John Piper with subtle reference to the medieval and ancient past. Including eleven heartfelt essays as well as poetry and the artist's own testimony, which explore and explain the subject matter, techniques and dazzling effect of Denny's craft, this book will be of interest to members of the thriving community of contemporary glass-makers as well as anyone who has seen and been moved by his work.
