Download or read book Espying Heaven written by Adrian Barlow and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Espying Heaven presents the first full-scale and full-colour survey of the achievement of Charles Eamer Kempe (1837-1907), the outstanding stained-glass designer of his era, and his Studio. From the start, Kempe gathered around him a close-knit team of artists and craftsmen who together developed his vision of a distinctive aesthetic setting for worship based on late medieval art, especially the stained glass of northern Europe. Espying Heaven illustrates the evolution of the 'Kempe style' and allows readers to judge for themselves the extent to which the later firm of C.E. Kempe & Co. (1907- 1934), set up by Kempe himself, succeeded in working within the tradition established by his founding artists. This book is meant to be a companion to Adrian Barlow's biographical study, Kempe: the Life, Art and Legacy of Charles Eamer Kempe (2018). In its own right, Espying Heaven both documents and celebrates a style of church art and decoration that has had a defining influence upon the Anglican Church worldwide. It highlights key features of Kempe glass, exploring questions of representation, symbolism and technique and suggesting new ways of 'reading' a Kempe window.
Book Synopsis A History of the Stained Glass of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by : Sarah Brown
Download or read book A History of the Stained Glass of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle written by Sarah Brown and published by St George's Chapel. This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle is one of the most famous buildings in the World, the venue for national pageant and ceremony since the Middle Ages. Created to be the architectural back-drop for the activities of the Order of the Garter, the pre-eminent chivalric order of medieval England, in modern times the chapel has become one of the country's premier tourist destinations. The stained glass of the chapel, dating from the early 16th century to the later 20th century, is one of its least familiar treasures. The chapel has always been served by the leading artist and craftsmen of the day and in designing for this most distinguished location, successive generations of glaziers have excelled themselves in the quality of their work. In this volume the history of the chapel's stained glass is explored by a team of distinguished stained glass historians and heraldic scholars for the first time, revealing a microcosm of English stained glass design across the centuries.
Book Synopsis Saint Mark’S Church, Philadelphia, from 1847 by : Gerald Klever, PhD
Download or read book Saint Mark’S Church, Philadelphia, from 1847 written by Gerald Klever, PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a nontraditional story of the people of an Episcopal parish that was born in center city Philadelphia in 1847 not many decades after the American Episcopal Church broke with the Church of England. By distinct choice, Saint Marks founders built an Anglican church, feeling that the Church of England journeyed too far from its Anglo-Catholic roots. These Victorian-era people and those who followed them gave magnificent gifts abundantly to their church. But they also built, operated, and staffed missions, chapels, and churches in Philadelphia and the nation. They could, did, and still do have an impact beyond their parish. This is their story.

Download or read book Sacred Light written by A. J. Meek and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-08-09 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned photographer A. J. Meek takes the novitiate on an inspired visual journey with eighty-eight color photographs of the interiors of churches and synagogues located in south Louisiana, mostly along the lower Mississippi River valley. Tourists may crowd the famous European cathedrals such as Notre Dame in Paris and Westminster Abbey in London. Yet the splendors of local churches in America all too often remain cloistered and unheralded. Meek's beautiful photographs correct this oversight for Louisiana, a state that features a great many beautiful and long-standing holy places. Often incorporating long exposures and select framing, the images in the first section of Sacred Light encompass altars, chancels, and sanctuaries. The second section contains photographs of statues representing deities, angels, madonnas, and saints, often seen with intense color derived from stained-glass windows or artificial light. Light itself is the subject of the third and last section. In several photographs, light is transformed by a window into a kaleidoscope of color on a wooden pew or pulpit chair. Other times the light seems to radiate a living presence of its own. Additionally, the book includes an essay by Louisiana State University art historian and liturgical space consultant, Marchita B. Mauck. Sacred Light also contains photographs of some of the church and synagogue restoration projects after Hurricane Katrina. Meek relates that the now-famous storm of August 2005 was the shadow he was looking for that defines blessed light. He places emphasis on restoration, not destruction, as a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit.

Download or read book Kempe written by Adrian Barlow and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kempe offers a radical revaluation of the life, work and reputation of Charles Eamer Kempe (1837-1907), one of the most remarkable and influential figures in late Victorian and Edwardian church art. Kempe's name became synonymous with a distinctive style of stained glass, furnishing and decoration deriving from late mediaeval and early Renaissance models. To this day, his hand can be seen in churches and cathedrals worldwide. Drawing on newly available archive material, Adrian Barlow evaluates Kempe's achievement in creating a Studio or School of artists and craftsmen who interpreted his designs and remained fiercely loyal to his aesthetic and religious ideals. He assesses his legacy and reputation today, as well as exploring his networks of patrons and influence, which stretched from the Royal Family and the Church of England hierarchy to the literary and artistic beau monde. These networks intersected at Kempe's stunning Sussex country house, Old Place, his 'Palace of Art'. Created to embody his ideals of beauty and history, it holds the key to understanding his contradictory personality, his public and private faces. This book will appeal to everyone interested in Victorian art in general and stained glass in particular. Detailed and wide-ranging, Kempe tells a compelling story.
