Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applique is the fascinating and versatile technique of applying one fabric to another. This beautiful book covers the principles within the technique, from the design stage through to padding, edgings and decorative stitches. It explains how to use a great collection of materials and threads, along with a rich array of stitches and textures to give dimension and contrast, thereby creating a unique piece of art. Written by a widely respected teacher, the book draws on her extensive examples to illustrate and introduce embroidery techniques, such as gold work, crewel work and silk shading, that can be used in a piece of applique; explain stitches that can embellish the piece further, such as the traditional buttonhole and blanket stitch, as well as couching, fly, feather, herringbone and knotted stitches; encourage experimentation and play with ideas, for example layering fabrics onto different backgrounds, trying different types of padding to create height, perspective and 3D effects, and using different edging stitches with a variety of threads around the fabrics. It is lavishly illustrated with 450 colour photographs supporting the detailed text and step-by-step instructions. It is a book to be kept close and treasured.

Book excerpt: Ann comes to quilting as a stained glass artist with the luxury of auditioning glass pieces throughout the design process before a piece is finished. By using a simple fusing technique that treats fabric patches as though they were glass, she shows how quilters can make an entire quilt without sewing until the three basted layers are quilted. Use her 7 patterns or create your own, try out fabrics on a forgiving fusible background, replace patches until you're satisfied, layer, and stitch. Her turned-edge technique gives an elegant look to any quilt. No more ripping out stitches because there's no sewing until you quilt!

Book excerpt: Keith New (1926-2012) was a significant pioneering British modernist stained glass artist in the 1950s and 1960s. This is the first monograph devoted to his work. It examines New's career in the first part, while the second part comprises a comprehensive catalogue of his stained glass. New's career was launched with the 1952 Royal College of Art's commission to design the nave windows for Basil Spence's Coventry Cathedral. The three-man team, led by Lawrence Lee, included Geoffrey Clarke, another pioneer in the medium. Each artist designed three windows. The commission brought New to the attention of other prominent architects, including Robert Matthew and Denys Lasdun, as well as artists and critics like John Piper and John Betjeman. Many commissions were for churches either in post-war rebuilds or in medieval buildings. Alongside these are examples in significant public buildings as well as schools. Altogether there were 34 executed commissions, five of which have been wholly or partially lost. Through privileged access to the family archive as well as research in record offices, the authors have drawn together a Catalogue Raisonné of his known designs, both executed and unrealised.
