Book excerpt: To ensure proper SIA methods were utilized for the Twin Lakes food web study, I also investigated the necessity of lipid extraction of fish tissues prior to SIA and in situ Rainbow Trout isotopic turnover. I found that mathematical normalization is sufficient to account for bias in delta13C values associated with lipid content in fish tissues when C:N ratios are above 3.5. C:N ratios below 3.5 indicate tissues have insufficient levels of lipid to bias delta13C values. Additionally, I estimated stable carbon retention time of 154 (95% CI: 106 to 224) and 292 (95% CI: 257 to 763) days for Rainbow Trout liver and white muscle, respectively. For nitrogen, I estimated a retention time of 186 (95% CI: 114 to 329) days for both white muscle and liver. Generally, these findings support the use of more timely and cost-effective processing methods and improve interpretation of SIA in future aquatic food web and diet studies involving adult coldwater fish in freshwater systems.

Book excerpt: In headwater streams that are heavily shaded by surrounding forests, primary production is often low and inputs of particulate and dissolved organic carbon from terrestrial environments are important resources in food webs. Stable isotope methods are useful for quantifying food web fluxes of different carbon sources but data are frequently difficult to interpret. Here, I developed novel stable isotope techniques to study the role of terrestrial energy subsidies in stream food webs in Trinidad and Tobago and the Adirondack region of New York. Specifically, I sought to determine the importance of carbon sources from terrestrial environments versus in-stream primary production in streams with varying light availability and fish communities. I compared natural canopy streams to streams with experimentally thinned canopies using a novel carbon and nitrogen dual isotope tracer technique. Comparing data from 13 C-acetate tracers, which are assimilated only by heterotrophic bacteria, and 15N- ammonium tracers, which are assimilated by both heterotrophs and autotrophs, allowed me to evaluate the relative importance of terrestrial carbon inputs and heterotrophic pathways. I also compared food webs in Trinidad and Adirondack streams along a natural gradient of canopy cover using stable isotopes of hydrogen, which indicated how much terrestrial organic matter was assimilated by consumers. In the Adirondacks, terrestrial carbon subsidies and heterotrophic bacteria were important resources for consumers, but the amount of bacterial carbon assimilated by invertebrates declined when light availability and primary production were experimentally increased. Fish introductions and light availability both influenced food webs in Trinidad streams. There were increased fluxes of carbon and nitrogen to consumers in streams with high light. Effects of fish introduction varied by consumer taxon, with strong positive effects of fish on filter-feeding invertebrates, and weaker positive effects of fish on grazer invertebrates. In comparative studies across light gradients, most consumer taxa were flexible in the amount of terrestrial carbon they assimilated, with higher reliance on terrestrial subsidies in streams with high canopy cover than in larger streams with less canopy cover. Overall, these results suggest that the light environment can have a strong influence on the role of terrestrial subsidies in streams.

Book excerpt: I examined the trophic structure of lakes containing and lacking fish using carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. [Delta] 15 N values revealed distinct trophic fractionation values for each type of lake. Trophic fractionation for fish-containing and fish-removed lakes was 2.03 [per thousand] ± 0.517 (n=116) and 1.76 [per thousand] ± 0.384 (n=186) respectively. Nitrogen values in fish-containing lakes species tended to be enriched relative to fish-removed lakes, suggesting increased P availability. Time-series of [Delta] 15 N for multiple species indicated small variations in nitrogen suggesting changes in diet from year to year. However significant depletion of 4.42 [per thousand] was noted for the copepod Leptodiaptomus signicauda and correlated with the reemergence of Daphnia melanica post fish removal. Computations of trophic position indicated that frogs and fish occupy the same trophic level and likely rely on the same food sources. This finding suggests that fish cause extirpation of frogs both through direct predation and competition for food resources.

Book excerpt: Aquatic food webs are comprised of complex spatial and temporal interactions within and among trophic levels. Human manipulations, such as construction of reservoirs, enhance uncertainties in our understanding of aquatic food web structure. Reservoirs are novel ecosystems which contain a unique composition of species. Species introductions into reservoirs may disrupt interactions within an already complex and poorly understood food web. In Scofield Reservoir in central Utah, a rapidly expanding population of Utah chub poses a detrimental threat to the blue-ribbon trout fishery. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has recently stocked cutthroat trout and tiger trout (a brown trout x brook trout hybrid) to potentially reduce Utah chub numbers as well as to enhance the sport fishery. I used standard fisheries techniques to describe food web interactions and to assess the potential for these piscivorous trout to control the expanding Utah chub population, as well as to determine sport fish performance and quantify diet overlap amongst top predators. Using bioenergetics modeling, I estimated very high rates of Utah chub consumption by cutthroat trout and tiger trout. These two species collectively display control of Utah chub, as the chub population is no longer exponentially increasing. Cutthroat trout and tiger trout are likely not food limited and convincingly exhibit high performance, as abundance of Utah chub is still extremely high. Both diet and stable isotope analysis showed significant overlap between these top piscivores in the reservoir, but also substantial overlap between cutthroat trout and rainbow trout with respect to Utah chub. Analysis of rainbow trout suggested this species is performing poorly; rainbow trout had extremely low catch rates and never switched to a piscivorous diet at larger sizes. Utah chub and rainbow trout had similar diet compositions, and thus rainbow trout may be competing (poorly) for food and space resources. This study contributes to our understanding of interspecific interactions among these unique assemblages of top predators in this artificial system. This research also provides knowledge to fisheries managers tasked with providing optimal sport fisheries in these artificial and dynamic systems, as well as expanding on our extremely limited knowledge of tiger trout ecology.
