Book excerpt: This book presents recent results and envisages new solutions of the stabilization problem for infinite-dimensional control systems. Its content is based on the extended versions of presentations at the Thematic Minisymposium “Stabilization of Distributed Parameter Systems: Design Methods and Applications” at ICIAM 2019, held in Valencia from 15 to 19 July 2019. This volume aims at bringing together contributions on stabilizing control design for different classes of dynamical systems described by partial differential equations, functional-differential equations, delay equations, and dynamical systems in abstract spaces. This includes new results in the theory of nonlinear semigroups, port-Hamiltonian systems, turnpike phenomenon, and further developments of Lyapunov's direct method. The scope of the book also covers applications of these methods to mathematical models in continuum mechanics and chemical engineering. It is addressed to readers interested in control theory, differential equations, and dynamical systems.
Book Synopsis Control and Estimation in Distributed Parameter Systems by : H. T. Banks
Download or read book Control and Estimation in Distributed Parameter Systems written by H. T. Banks and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in control and estimation of distributed parameter systems encompasses a wide range of applications including both fundamental science and emerging technologies. The latter include smart materials (piezoceramics, shape memory alloys, magnetostrictives, electrorheological fluids) fabrication and testing, design of high-pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactors for production of microelectronic surfaces (e.g., semiconductors), while the former include groundwater contamination cleanup and other environmental modeling questions, climatology, flow control, and fluid-structure interactions as well as more traditional topics in biology, mechanics, and acoustics. These expository papers provide substantial stimulus to both young researchers and experienced investigators in control theory. Includes a comprehensive and lucid presentation that relates frequency domain techniques to state-space or time domain approaches for infinite-dimensional systems including design of robust stabilizing and finite-dimensional controllers for infinite-dimensional systems. It focuses on these two approaches to control design in an integrated system theoretic framework. This is excellent reading for researchers in both the frequency domain and time domain control communities. In other articles, topics considered include pointwise control of distributed parameter systems, bounded and unbounded sensors and actuators, stabilization issues for large flexible structures, and an overview discussion of damping models for flexible structures.
Book Synopsis Control of Higher–Dimensional PDEs by : Thomas Meurer
Download or read book Control of Higher–Dimensional PDEs written by Thomas Meurer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-13 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents new model-based design methods for trajectory planning, feedback stabilization, state estimation, and tracking control of distributed-parameter systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). Flatness and backstepping techniques and their generalization to PDEs with higher-dimensional spatial domain lie at the core of this treatise. This includes the development of systematic late lumping design procedures and the deduction of semi-numerical approaches using suitable approximation methods. Theoretical developments are combined with both simulation examples and experimental results to bridge the gap between mathematical theory and control engineering practice in the rapidly evolving PDE control area. The text is divided into five parts featuring: - a literature survey of paradigms and control design methods for PDE systems - the first principle mathematical modeling of applications arising in heat and mass transfer, interconnected multi-agent systems, and piezo-actuated smart elastic structures - the generalization of flatness-based trajectory planning and feedforward control to parabolic and biharmonic PDE systems defined on general higher-dimensional domains - an extension of the backstepping approach to the feedback control and observer design for parabolic PDEs with parallelepiped domain and spatially and time varying parameters - the development of design techniques to realize exponentially stabilizing tracking control - the evaluation in simulations and experiments Control of Higher-Dimensional PDEs — Flatness and Backstepping Designs is an advanced research monograph for graduate students in applied mathematics, control theory, and related fields. The book may serve as a reference to recent developments for researchers and control engineers interested in the analysis and control of systems governed by PDEs.

Book Synopsis Boundary Stabilization of Thin Plates by : John E. Lagnese
Download or read book Boundary Stabilization of Thin Plates written by John E. Lagnese and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents one of the main directions of research in the area of design and analysis of feedback stabilizers for distributed parameter systems in structural dynamics. Important progress has been made in this area, driven, to a large extent, by problems in modern structural engineering that require active feedback control mechanisms to stabilize structures which may possess only very weak natural damping. Much of the progress is due to the development of new methods to analyze the stabilizing effects of specific feedback mechanisms. Boundary Stabilization of Thin Plates provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of asymptotic stability of a thin plate when appropriate stabilizing feedback mechanisms acting through forces and moments are introduced along a part of the edge of the plate. In particular, primary emphasis is placed on the derivation of explicit estimates of the asymptotic decay rate of the energy of the plate that are uniform with respect to the initial energy of the plate, that is, on uniform stabilization results. The method that is systematically employed throughout this book is the use of multipliers as the basis for the derivation of a priori asymptotic estimates on plate energy. It is only in recent years that the power of the multiplier method in the context of boundary stabilization of hyperbolic partial differential equations came to be realized. One of the more surprising applications of the method appears in Chapter 5, where it is used to derive asymptotic decay rates for the energy of the nonlinear von Karman plate, even though the technique is ostensibly a linear one.

Book Synopsis Optimal Measurement Methods for Distributed Parameter System Identification by : Dariusz Ucinski
Download or read book Optimal Measurement Methods for Distributed Parameter System Identification written by Dariusz Ucinski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For dynamic distributed systems modeled by partial differential equations, existing methods of sensor location in parameter estimation experiments are either limited to one-dimensional spatial domains or require large investments in software systems. With the expense of scanning and moving sensors, optimal placement presents a critical problem. Optimal Measurement Methods for Distributed Parameter System Identification discusses the characteristic features of the sensor placement problem, analyzes classical and recent approaches, and proposes a wide range of original solutions, culminating in the most comprehensive and timely treatment of the issue available. By presenting a step-by-step guide to theoretical aspects and to practical design methods, this book provides a sound understanding of sensor location techniques. Both researchers and practitioners will find the case studies, the proposed algorithms, and the numerical examples to be invaluable. This text also offers results that translate easily to MATLAB and to Maple. Assuming only a basic familiarity with partial differential equations, vector spaces, and probability and statistics, and avoiding too many technicalities, this is a superb resource for researchers and practitioners in the fields of applied mathematics, electrical, civil, geotechnical, mechanical, chemical, and environmental engineering.

Book Synopsis Stability of Elastic Multi-Link Structures by : Kaïs Ammari
Download or read book Stability of Elastic Multi-Link Structures written by Kaïs Ammari and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief investigates the asymptotic behavior of some PDEs on networks. The structures considered consist of finitely interconnected flexible elements such as strings and beams (or combinations thereof), distributed along a planar network. Such study is motivated by the need for engineers to eliminate vibrations in some dynamical structures consisting of elastic bodies, coupled in the form of chain or graph such as pipelines and bridges. There are other complicated examples in the automotive industry, aircraft and space vehicles, containing rather than strings and beams, plates and shells. These multi-body structures are often complicated, and the mathematical models describing their evolution are quite complex. For the sake of simplicity, this volume considers only 1-d networks.
