Book excerpt: The first part of this dissertation extends the applicability of stability-preserving mappings to dynamical systems whose evolutionary processes explicitly consider the effect of external perturbations (inputs) and measurements (outputs), via multi-valued operators. We provide definitions for input-to-state stability and input-to-output stability for a general class of systems whose trajectories lie in arbitrary metric spaces, indexed by hybrid time sets. Novel proofs of results such as the ISS-Lyapunov and the small-gain theorem are developed with the use of stability-preserving mappings. The second part, where we employ the theory to model and analyze the complex dynamics found in the interplay of the determinants of mood disorders. The model integrates biopsychosocial findings of the bipolar and depressive spectra, modeling attractors corresponding to mood states such as euthymia, mania, depression, the mixed state, anhedonia, hedonia, and flat or blunted affect, as well as the transitions among these attractors caused by external influences, like stress and medication. Conditions for global stability of euthymia, obtained via a stability analysis, are supported by studies in the neuropsychology literature, while computational analyses provide a novel explanation of the mechanism underlying mood stabilizers.

Michel's retirement from the University of Notre Dame. I have known Tony since 1984 when he joined the University of Notre Dame's faculty as Chair of the Depart ment of Electrical Engineering. As a researcher, he has made im portant contributions in several areas of systems theory and control theory, espe cially stability analysis of large-scale dynamical systems. The numerous awards he received from the professional societies, particularly the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), are a testament to his accomplishments in research. He received the IEEE Control Systems Society's Best Transactions Paper Award (1978), and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society's Guillemin-Cauer Prize Paper Award (1984) and Myril B. Reed Outstanding Paper Award (1993), among others. In addition, he was a Fulbright Scholar (1992) and received the Alexander von Hum boldt Forschungspreis (Alexander von Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists) from the German government (1997). To date, he has written eight books and published over 150 archival journal papers. Tony is also an effective administrator who inspires high academic standards.

I had given a similar course at the Gradu ate Center of the City University of New York the previous year and came to France equipped with the class notes of two of my students there, Carol Hurwitz and Michael Maller. My goal was to present Smale's n-Stability Theorem as completely and compactly as possible and in such a way that the students would have easy access to the literature. I was not confident that I could do all this in lectures in French, so I decided to distribute lecture notes. I wrote these notes in English and Remi Langevin translated them into French. His work involved much more than translation. He consistently corrected for style, clarity, and accuracy. Albert Fathi got involved in reading the manuscript. His role quickly expanded to extensive rewriting and writing. Fathi wrote (5. 1) and (5. 2) and rewrote Theorem 7. 8 when I was in despair of ever getting it right with all the details. He kept me honest at all points and played a large role in the final form of the manuscript. He also did the main work in getting the manuscript ready when I had left France and Langevin was unfortunately unavailable. I ran out of steam by the time it came to Chapter 10. M.

In addition, as such systems evolve in time and space, explorations and research on their stability have been mainly focused on the whole domain in which the system evolved. The authors have strongly felt that, in this sense, important considerations are missing: those which consist in considering that the system of interest may be unstable on the whole domain, but stable in a certain region of the whole domain. This is the case in many applications ranging from engineering sciences to living science. For this reason, the authors have dedicated this book to extension of classical results on stability to the regional case. This book considers a very important issue, which is that it should be accessible to mathematicians and to graduate engineering with a minimal background in functional analysis. Moreover, for the majority of the students, this would be their only acquaintance with infinite dimensional system. Accordingly, it is organized by following increasing difficulty order. The two first chapters deal with stability and stabilization of infinite dimensional linear systems described by partial differential equations. The following chapters concern original and innovative aspects of stability and stabilization of certain classes of systems motivated by real applications, that is to say bilinear and semi-linear systems. The stability of these systems has been considered from a global and regional point of view. A particular aspect concerning the stability of the gradient has also been considered for various classes of systems.
