Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of NonLinear Shells is a compilation of the author's work on analyzing the behaviour of spherical caps and related shell structures under various (axisymmetric) load systems. Differing from other texts on shells of revolution, it is one of the first attempts to deal with effects of multi-parameter load systems. This extension leads to the discovery of some new, hitherto unknown phenomena exhibited by these structures. In addition, the book presents a novel way to characterize properties of solutions of the governing equations for spherical caps - a classification anchored in a theory called reciprocal systems. The author has introduced a deformation map, a projection of multi-dimensional solutions to two-dimensional graphs, to enable analysts to gain insight into the physical meaning of the results obtained. Numerous examples illustrate the concepts introduced. This book also comes to grips with many misconceptions existing in engineering literature about the question of the stability of solutions.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in our understanding of instabilities in galactic type systems have led to an unravelling of some of the mysteries of what determines the form galaxies take. This book focuses on the mathematical development of the subject, assuming no prior knowledge of it, with a strong emphasis on the underlying physical interpretation. This framework is used to discuss the most relevant instabilities which are believed to be closely involved in the way galaxies are formed, in a model independent manner. The relevant observed properties of galaxies that may be used to establish the role of these physical mechanisms are discussed. The book also includes a chapter discussing numerical simulation techniques, with attention paid to their limitations and to recent advances in this approach. It is demonstrated that recent developments in computer hardware enable a detailed comparison of simulations with analysis. Thus the simulations extend our physical understanding beyond the limitations of the analysis. The book is intended for use by postgraduate students and researchers in the areas of cosmology, extragalactic astronomy and dynamics.

Book excerpt: The aim of Stability of Finite and Infinite Dimensional Systems is to provide new tools for specialists in control system theory, stability theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, and differential-delay equations. Stability of Finite and Infinite Dimensional Systems is the first book that gives a systematic exposition of the approach to stability analysis which is based on estimates for matrix-valued and operator-valued functions, allowing us to investigate various classes of finite and infinite dimensional systems from the unified viewpoint. This book contains solutions to the problems connected with the Aizerman and generalized Aizerman conjectures and presents fundamental results by A. Yu. Levin for the stability of nonautonomous systems having variable real characteristic roots. Stability of Finite and Infinite Dimensional Systems is intended not only for specialists in stability theory, but for anyone interested in various applications who has had at least a first-year graduate-level course in analysis.

Book excerpt: The physics of extended systems is a topic of great interest for the experimentalist and the theoretician alike. There exists a large literature on this subject in which solutions, bifurcations, fronts, and the dynamical stability of these objects are discussed. To the uninitiated reader, the theoretical methods that lead to the various results often seem somewhat ad hoc, and it is not clear how to generalize them to the nextthat is, not yet solvedproblem. In an introduction to the subject of instabilities in spatially infinite systems, Pierre Collet and Jean-Pierre Eckmann aim to give a systematic account of these methods, and to work out the relevant features that make them operational. The book examines in detail a number of model equations from physics. The mathematical developments of the subject are based on bifurcation theory and on the theory of invariant manifolds. These are combined to give a coherent description of several problems in which instabilities occur, notably the Eckhaus instability and the formation of fronts in the Swift-Hohenberg equation. These phenomena can appear only in infinite systems, and this book breaks new ground as a systematic account of the mathematics connected with infinite space domains. Originally published in 1990. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the conventional research for the general theory of stability, this mono graph deals with problems on stability and stabilization of dynamic systems with respect not to all but just to a given part of the variables characterizing these systems. Such problems are often referred to as the problems of partial stability (stabilization). They naturally arise in applications either from the requirement of proper performance of a system or in assessing system capa bility. In addition, a lot of actual (or desired) phenomena can be formulated in terms of these problems and be analyzed with these problems taken as the basis. The following multiaspect phenomena and problems can be indicated: • "Lotka-Volterra ecological principle of extinction;" • focusing and acceleration of particles in electromagnetic fields; • "drift" of the gyroscope axis; • stabilization of a spacecraft by specially arranged relative motion of rotors connected to it. Also very effective is the approach to the problem of stability (stabilization) with respect to all the variables based on preliminary analysis of partial sta bility (stabilization). A. M. Lyapunov, the founder of the modern theory of stability, was the first to formulate the problem of partial stability. Later, works by V. V. Rumyan tsev drew the attention of many mathematicians and mechanicians around the world to this problem, which resulted in its being intensively worked out. The method of Lyapunov functions became the key investigative method which turned out to be very effective in analyzing both theoretic and applied problems.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on recent achievements in stability and feedback stabilization of infinite systems. In particular emphasis is placed on second order partial differential equations, such as Euler-Bernoulli beam equations, which arise from vibration control of flexible robots arms and large space structures. Various control methods such as sensor feedback control and dynamic boundary control are applied to stabilize the equations. Many new theorems and methods are included in the book. Proof procedures of existing theorems are simplified, and detailed proofs have been given to most theorems. New results on semigroups and their stability are presented, and readers can learn several useful techniques for solving practical engineering problems. Until now, the recently obtained research results included in this book were unavailable in one volume. This self-contained book is an invaluable source of information for all those who are familiar with some basic theorems of functional analysis.
