Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the use of two types of stability analysis, i.e. total stress and effective stress, for evaluating the factor of safety of embankments constructed on soft clay. Three classes of stability problems are defined based upon the drainage conditions during construction and shear. The use of both types of analyses for each class of stability is discussed. The factors of safety computed for both types of analyses are compared for three situations: eight case studies of actual embankment failures; variation with embankment height for seven embankments; and the long term stability for two hypothetical embankments.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the behaviour of soft ground improved by some of the more common methods, including the installation of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), or the installation of soil-cement columns formed by deep mixing, or the preloading of soft ground by application of a vacuum pressure in addition to, or instead of, a surcharge loading. In particular, it describes the theories and the numerical modelling techniques that may be applied to these soft ground improvement schemes to estimate the immediate and time-dependent mechanical response of the in situ soil. Particular emphasis has been placed on methods that reliably predict ground deformations associated with ground improvement techniques. The book commences with a brief description of the various ground improvement methods and then describes general techniques for modelling the behaviour of soft clay subsoils by the finite element method, as well as details of the methods for modelling soft soils improved by the installation of PVDs. It also includes chapters describing the theory of vacuum consolidation and methods for calculating vacuum pressure-induced ground deformation, as well as a theory which can be used to predict the response of soft ground improved by the installation of soil-cement columns. An important distinguishing feature of this book is the routine use of comparisons of predictions of the proposed models with the results of laboratory studies, and particularly field case studies, in order to validate the proposed methods of analysis. The field case histories are from soft soil sites at various locations around the world. The book is directed towards students of geotechnical engineering as well as geotechnical practitioners. In the main it provides complete derivations of most of the important theoretical results, as the intention was to write a book that could be used as both a teaching text and a reference work for students and practitioners. Audience: The book is intended for geotechnical practitioners as well as for students.

Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, providing over thirty real-life case studies of ground improvement projects selected by the worlds top experts in ground improvement from around the globe. Volume 3 of the highly regarded Elsevier Geo-engineering book series coordinated by the Series Editor: Professor John A Hudson FREng. An extremely reader friendly chapter format. Discusses wider economical and environmental issues facing scientists in the ground improvement. Ground improvement has been both a science and art, with significant developments observed through ancient history. From the use of straw as blended infill with soils for additional strength during the ancient Roman civilizations, and the use of elephants for compaction of earth dams during the early Asian civilizations, the concepts of reinforced earth with geosynthetics, use of electrokinetics and thermal modifications of soils have come a long way. The use of large and stiff stone columns and subsequent sand drains in the past has now been replaced by quicker to install and more effective prefabricated vertical drains, which have also eliminated the need for more expensive soil improvement methods. The early selection and application of the most appropriate ground improvement techniques can improve considerably not only the design and performance of foundations and earth structures, including embankments, cut slopes, roads, railways and tailings dams, but also result in their cost-effectiveness. Ground improvement works have become increasingly challenging when more and more problematic soils and marginal land have to be utilized for infrastructure development. This edited compilation contains a collection of Chapters from invited experts in various areas of ground improvement, who have illustrated the basic concepts and the applications of different ground improvement techniques using real projects that they have been involved in. The case histories from many countries ranging from Asia, America, Australia and Europe are addressed.

Book excerpt: The mechanism of soil-reinforcement interaction for a reinforced embankment on soft clay has been explored by conducting a parametric study using a coupled non-linear elastoplastic finite element program. One of the major issues in the design of a reinforced embankment on soft clay is the magnitude of tension that can be mobilized in the geosynthetic reinforcement. Previous research using geotechnical centrifuge modelling and present research using finite element modelling has confirmed that the tension mobilized in the reinforcement is only of the order of active lateral thrust in the embankment. The parametric study has revealed that the soil-reinforcement interaction mechanism depends on the ratio of embankment height to the depth of the clay layer. The embankment behaves similar to a rigid footing in case of deep clay deposit. In this case, the failure mechanism is similar to a slip circle and there is very little contribution from the clay-reinforcement interface towards the mobilization of reinforcement tension. However, if the depth of clay deposit is small, the soil-reinforcement interaction mode is similar to direct shear failure and slip surface is located close to the clay-reinforcement interface. In this case, the contribution of clay-reinforcement interface towards the tension mobilized in the reinforcement is higher and therefore, the contribution of the reinforcement towards overall stability of the embankment is greater. Based on the results of the parametric study a novel serviceability criterion is proposed that aims to limit the lateral deformation of the clay foundation at the toe of the embankment by limiting the allowable mobilized tension in the reinforcement. A simple procedure for the evaluation of the efficiency of soil-reinforcement interface for reinforced embankments on soft clays is also proposed. The validity of the proposed serviceability criterion and the design charts was successfully tested using two field case studies. Sackville t.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the critical issue of slope stability and safety Soil Strength and Slope Stability, Second Edition presents the latest thinking and techniques in the assessment of natural and man-made slopes, and the factors that cause them to survive or crumble. Using clear, concise language and practical examples, the book explains the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering as applied to slopes and embankments. The new second edition includes a thorough discussion on the use of analysis software, providing the background to understand what the software is doing, along with several methods of manual analysis that allow readers to verify software results. The book also includes a new case study about Hurricane Katrina failures at 17th Street and London Avenue Canal, plus additional case studies that frame the principles and techniques described. Slope stability is a critical element of geotechnical engineering, involved in virtually every civil engineering project, especially highway development. Soil Strength and Slope Stability fills the gap in industry literature by providing practical information on the subject without including extraneous theory that may distract from the application. This balanced approach provides clear guidance for professionals in the field, while remaining comprehensive enough for use as a graduate-level text. Topics include: Mechanics of soil and limit equilibrium procedures Analyzing slope stability, rapid drawdown, and partial consolidation Safety, reliability, and stability analyses Reinforced slopes, stabilization, and repair The book also describes examples and causes of slope failure and stability conditions for analysis, and includes an appendix of slope stability charts. Given how vital slope stability is to public safety, a comprehensive resource for analysis and practical action is a valuable tool. Soil Strength and Slope Stability is the definitive guide to the subject, proving useful both in the classroom and in the field.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centrifuge tests have been conducted to study the behaviour of embankments on soft clay and to provide quantitative data against which to test the predictive power of the Cambridge CRISP program. Soft clay foundations were prepared with an overconsolidated crust over normally consolidated kaolin clay. Methods of conducting site investigation tests on this clay have been described in Parts 1 and 2. Tests were performed both with embankments constructed during flight in stages and in a single lift to failure, with measures of pore pressures at selected locations, and displacements using a marker grid. Some tests were performed with the clay foundation strengthened using granular columns. An embankment built in a single life, on unstrengthened clay failed at a height of 11.6m before inducing failure. Heights of 13m were achieved with stage constructed embankments on strengthened foundations, but without any failure occurring. Unexpected large lateral displacements were measured in unstrengthened clay during consolidation periods. Large displacement increases are a good indicator of factor of safety below about 1.3. At corresponding loading the use of strengthened foundations decreased lateral and vertical movements by about 50.
