Book excerpt: This volume is the collection of papers presented at the workshop on 'The Stability of Spatially Varying and Time Dependent Flows" sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (lCASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) during August 19- 23, 1985. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together some of the experts in the field for an exchange of ideas to update the current status of knowledge and to help identify trends for future research. Among the invited speakers were D.M. Bushnell, M. Goldstein, P. Hall, Th. Herbert, R.E. Kelly, L. Mack, A.H. Nayfeh, F.T. Smith, and C. von Kerczek. The contributed papers were by A. Bayliss, R. Bodonyi, S. Cowley, C. Grosch, S. Lekoudis, P. Monkewitz, A. Patera, and C. Streett. In the first article, Bushnell provides a historical background on laminar flow control (LFC) research and summarizes the crucial role played by stability theory in LFC system design. He also identifies problem areas in stability theory requiring further research from the view-point of ap plications to LFC design. It is an excellent article for theoreticians looking for some down-to-earth applications of stability theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers focuses on turbulent flows meeting the requirements for the boundary-layer or thin-shear-layer approximations. Its approach is devising relatively fundamental, and often subtle, empirical engineering correlations, which are then introduced into various forms of describing equations for final solution. After introducing the topic on turbulence, the book examines the conservation equations for compressible turbulent flows, boundary-layer equations, and general behavior of turbulent boundary layers. The latter chapters describe the CS method for calculating two-dimensional and axisymmetric laminar and turbulent boundary layers. This book will be useful to readers who have advanced knowledge in fluid mechanics, especially to engineers who study the important problems of design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has evolved from lectures and graduate courses given in Brescia (Italy), Bordeaux and Toulouse (France};' It is intended to serve as an introƯ duction to the stability analysis of noncharacteristic multidimensional small viscosity boundary layers developed in (MZl]. We consider parabolic singular perturbations of hyperbolic systems L(u) - £P(u) = 0, where L is a nonlinear hyperbolic first order system and P a nonlinear spatially elliptic term. The parameter e measures the strength of the diffusive effects. With obvious reference to fluid mechanics, it is referred to as a "viscosity." The equation holds on a domain n and is supplemented by boundary conditions on an. The main goal of this book is to studythe behavior of solutions as etends to O. In the interior of the domain, the diffusive effects are negligible and the nondiffusive or inviscid equations (s = 0) are good approximations. However, the diffusive effects remain important in a small vicinity of the boundary where they induce rapid fluctuations of the solution, called layers. Boundary layers occur in many problems in physics and mechanics. They also occur in free boundary value problems, and in particular in the analysis of shock waves. Indeed, our study of noncharacteristic boundary layers is strongly motivated by the analysis of multidimensional shock waves. At the least, it is a necessary preliminary and important step. We also recall the importance of the viscous approach in the theoretical analysis ofconservation laws (see, e.g., [Lax], (Kru], (Bi-Br])

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great number of varied approaches to hydrodynamic stability theory appear as a bulk of results whose classification and discussion are well-known in the literature. Several books deal with one aspect of this theory alone (e.g. the linear case, the influence of temperature and magnetic field, large classes of globally stable fluid motions etc.). The aim of this book is to provide a complete mathe matical treatment of hydrodynamic stability theory by combining the early results of engineers and applied mathematicians with the recent achievements of pure mathematicians. In order to ensure a more operational frame to this theory I have briefly outlined the main results concerning the stability of the simplest types of flow. I have attempted several definitions of the stability of fluid flows with due consideration of the connections between them. On the other hand, as the large number of initial and boundary value problems in hydrodynamic stability theory requires appropriate treat ments, most of this book is devoted to the main concepts and methods used in hydrodynamic stability theory. Open problems are expressed in both mathematical and physical terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides both a comprehensive overview and deep insights on the state-of-the-art methods used in wind turbine aerodynamics, as well as their advantages and limits. The focus of this work is specifically on wind turbines, where the aerodynamics are different from that of other fields due to the turbulent wind fields they face and the resultant differences in structural requirements. It gives a complete picture of research in the field, taking into account the different approaches which are applied. This book would be useful to professionals, academics, researchers and students working in the field.
