Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Teaching on Sanctification: A Practical Exposition of Romans Vi By Practical Exposition I do not mean Free and Easy Observations, or Pious Reflections, carried 'to' the sacred text, and there suspended on pegs of Scripture Phraseology. All Scripture-Exposition - inclusive of that which is designated Practical - is, or ought to be, Scripture-Explication. It is, or ought to be, the unfolding and exposing-to-view of the thoughts which had been infolded in the origination of the sacred text. It belongs to the ideal of such Exposition as is fitly called Practical, to speak directly to the unprofessional intelligence, and as much as possible in the accredited dialect of culture. When thus speaking the Expositor should present to the public, not so much the processes as the results of scientific exegesis. Book Synopsis Still Time to Care by : Greg Johnson
Download or read book Still Time to Care written by Greg Johnson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.

Book Synopsis Holiness in the Letters of Paul by : J. Ayodeji Adewuya
Download or read book Holiness in the Letters of Paul written by J. Ayodeji Adewuya and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's understanding of holiness stems from the holiness of God as revealed in the Old Testament. Using varied terminology, Paul describes the holiness that should characterize the believers as the people of God. God expects moral integrity of his people, because he has provided believers with his Holy Spirit to enable them to live exemplary, Christlike lives in this present world, though polluted, as they prepare for the world to come. Believers, who, like Paul, anticipate the Parousia, must not only desire but also pray that holiness becomes a reality in their lives, cognizant of the fact that holiness is a matter of practice, not merely a status that one attains upon justification. Thus, holiness is an imperative for the people of God.

Book excerpt: Faith and Sanctification is the first volume to appear in the First American Edition of a series of monographs covering the whole field of Christian theology. In this volume, Professor Berkouwer sets forth the gravity of the Christian's responsibility: "Ye are the light of the world." Also is involved the paradox of the modesty of sanctification and its inherent radiance -- "For there is nothing hid, save that it should be manifested; neither was anything made secret, but that it should come to light"--That gives it its peculiar character. - Jacket flap.
Book Synopsis The Nature of True Virtue by : Jonathan Edwards
Download or read book The Nature of True Virtue written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major work in moral philosophy by the Puritan who was the most modern man of his age. "Edwards at his very greatest . . . he speaks with an insight into science and psychology so much ahead of his time that our own can hardly be said to have caught up with him." Perry Miller, 'Jonathan Edwards' Like the great speculators Augustine, Aquinas, and Pascal, Jonathan Edwards treated religious ideas as problems not of dogma, but of life. His exploration of self-love disguised as "true virtue" is grounded in the hard facts of human behavior. More than a hellfire preacher, more than a theologian, Edwards was a bold and independent philosopher. Nowhere is his force of mind more evident than in this book. He speaks as powerfully to us today as he did to the keenest minds of the eighteenth century.
