Book Synopsis The Liturgical Year by : Adrien Nocent
Download or read book The Liturgical Year written by Adrien Nocent and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year was published in the 1970s, it was the very first comprehensive commentary on the three-year lectionary in relation to the Sacramentary/Missal as these were revised following the Second Vatican Council. Expressed on nearly every page was Nocent's conviction that the liturgy and the Word of God proclaimed within it have something important to say to real people of every culture and time. He constantly returns to the question: What does this passage have to say to us today? Now this extraordinary work of applied, postconciliar liturgical scholarship has been emended and annotated by one of today's leading liturgical scholars. Paul Turner has provided many helpful explanatory notes on history, culture, language, and, of course, liturgy. He has also updated the liturgical texts to conform to The Roman Missal, Third Edition. The result is a resource that promises to enrich and inspire a new generation of presiders, preachers, liturgy planners, and students. On the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II's Sacrosanctum Concilium, encounter the vibrant scholarship and pastoral wisdom of Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year again or for the first time! Volume 3 covers all of the Sundays of Ordinary Time.

Download or read book St. Paul's written by Lecturer in Modern British History Arthur Burns and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present St Paul's Cathedral, Christopher Wren's masterpiece, is the fourth religious building to occupy the site. Its location in the heart of the capital reflects its importance in the English church while the photographs of it burning during the Blitz forms one of the most powerful and familiar images of London during recent times. This substantial and richly illustrated study, published to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Paul's, presents 42 scholarly contributions which approach the cathedral from a range of perspectives. All are supported by photographs, illustrations and plans of the exterior and interior of St Paul's, both past and present. Eight essays discuss the history of St Paul's, demonstrating the role of the cathedral in the formation of England's church and state from the 7th century onwards; nine essays examine the organisation and function of the cathedral during the Middle Ages, looking at, for example, the arrangement of the precinct, the tombs, the Dean's household during the 15th century, the liturgy and the archaeology. The remaining papers examine many aspects of Wren's cathedral, including its construction, fittings and embellishments, its estates and income, music and rituals, its place in London, its library, its role in the book trade and its reputation.

Book Synopsis Women in Ministry by : Phyllis Zagano
Download or read book Women in Ministry written by Phyllis Zagano and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pope Paul VI implemented the decision of the Second Vatican Council to renew the diaconate as a permanent order of ministry, he asked the logical question: "What about women deacons?" That question continues to be asked throughout the Church as the possibility of restoring women to the diaconate emerges more and more as a pressing answer to the ministerial needs of the Church. In Women in Ministry: Emerging Questions about the Diaconate, theologian Phyllis Zagano examines three distinct questions about the possibility of women in the diaconate: Is the inclusion of women in the permanent diaconate part of the unfinished business of Vatican II? What are the ecumenical implications of women ordained as deacons? Did Pope Benedict XVI envision the inclusion of women in the diaconate? These three timely and important essays are introduced by Deacon William T. Ditewig, PhD, director of lay and deacon formation in the Diocese of Monterey in California and former executive director of the Secretariat for the Diaconate of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC. Book Synopsis Is the Pope Catholic? by : John Cantwell Kiley
Download or read book Is the Pope Catholic? written by John Cantwell Kiley and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is as though Jesus said, "Keep doing it, until you get it right." Doing what? "Being pope." And 264 human beings have tried their hand at it. Jesus hand-picked Simon, a Jewish fisherman, to be the first pope, renaming him Peter. Surely he was the most unlikely candidate for such an election: rash, full of doubts and fears, bragging, a weak reed, if there ever was one. Under Jesus' skillful guidance, Peter became a good pope but not a perfect one, and the long list of successor popes proved to be good, bad or indifferent. The centuries went by and the perfect pope failed to appear, as papal history illustrates. This was regrettable, but not fatal. Until now. With the coming of the Third Millennium a merely good pope is not good enough. Nothing short of a perfect pope will be able turn the tide now threatening to drown every hope for an earthly measure of human happiness or even for bare survival. This is a tremendus burden on Cardinal Isaac. Will he be able to be the perfect pope? Will he be good enough? If not, he will be the last Pope. This is his story.

Book Synopsis The Norwegian-American Lutheran Experience in 1950s Japan by : Kate Allen
Download or read book The Norwegian-American Lutheran Experience in 1950s Japan written by Kate Allen and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping Up to the Cold War Challenge: The Norwegian-American Lutheran Experience in 1950s Japan describes the events that led to the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), an American Christian denomination, to respond to General MacArthur’s call for missionaries. This Church did not initially respond, but did so in 1949 only after their missionaries had been expelled from China due to the victory of communist forces on the mainland. Because they feared Japan would also succumb to communism in less than ten years, the missionaries evaded ecumenical cooperation and social welfare projects to focus on evangelism and establishing congregations. Many of the ELC missionaries were children and grandchildren of Norwegian immigrants who had settled as farmers on the North American Great Plains. Based on interview transcripts and other primary sources, this book intimately describes the personal struggles of individuals responding to the call to be a missionary, adjusting to life in Japan, learning Japanese, raising a family, and engaging in mission work. As the Cold War threat diminished and independence movements elsewhere were ending colonialism, missionaries were compelled to change methods and attitudes. The 1950s was a time when missionaries went out much in the same manner that they did in the nineteenth century. Through the voices of the missionaries and their Japanese coworkers, the book documents how many of the traditional missionary assumptions begin to be questioned.
