Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, through a distinctive evangelical and critical approach, Michael Bird explores the historical development of the four canonical Gospels. He shows how the memories and faith of the earliest believers formed the Gospel accounts of Jesus that got written and, in turn, how these accounts further shaped the early church. Bird's study clarifies the often confusing debates over the origins of the canonical Gospels. Bird navigates recent concerns and research as he builds an informed case for how the early Christ followers wrote and spread the story of Jesus -- the story by which they believed they were called to live. The Gospel of the Lord is ideal for students or anyone who wants to know the story behind the four Gospels. Watch an interview with Michael Bird from our Eerdmans Author Interview Series:

Excerpt: ...that a fellowcraftsman in dire straits physically, socially, and mentally, had arrived in their town. That was enough for them, no matter who he was or that others looked at him askance, their hearts and home flew open to receive him. They gave to him their hearts and their home, he gave them entrance into the joy of his life mission. Years afterwards from this same city he wrote to the church at Rome where Aquila and Priscilla were again living, calling them his "helpers in Christ Jesus,"--a blessed and grateful remembrance of what they had been to him and his work in Corinth and later on in Ephesus. Nor were their generous hospitality, tender friendship, and loyal co-operation the only services they rendered Paul. At some period of their labors together in the cause of Christ, they fearlessly imperiled their own lives that they might save his. Paul's words concerning this occurrence are--"who have for my sake laid down their own necks." Friendship could go no farther, loyalty to Christ's service could go no farther. They deemed his life more indispensable to Christianity than their own, death had threatened him, they stepped into the breach, Paul was saved. Here is another obligation Paul was under to his friends. Without friends his world-service could never have been what it was; nay, his life itself would have been forfeited long years before the end finally came, for again and again during his perilous travels and labors did they save his life. Here then is another tribute to the glory of friendship, another measurement of the inestimable value of the friendships of St. Paul. This deed of Priscilla and Aquila was well known to the early church. And the obligations under which the church of that day rested because...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical Theology is a systematic theology written from the perspective of a biblical scholar. Michael F. Bird contends that the center, unity, and boundary of the evangelical faith is the evangel (= gospel), as opposed to things like justification by faith or inerrancy. The evangel is the unifying thread in evangelical theology and the theological hermeneutic through which the various loci of theology need to be understood. Using the gospel as a theological leitmotif—an approach to Christian doctrine that begins with the gospel and sees each loci through the lens of the gospel—this text presents an authentically evangelical theology, as opposed to an ordinary systematic theology written by an evangelical theologian. According to the author, theology is the drama of gospelizing—performing and living out the gospel in the theatre of Christian life. The text features tables, sidebars, and questions for discussion. The end of every part includes a “What to Take Home” section that gives students a run-down on what they need to know. And since reading theology can often be dry and cerebral, the author applies his unique sense of humor in occasional “Comic Belief” sections so that students may enjoy their learning experience through some theological humor added for good measure.

Book excerpt: There may be no more powerful desire in the human heart than to be loved. And not just loved, but loved anyway. In spite of what we've done or left undone, in spite of the ways we have failed or floundered. We long for an unconditional, lavish love that we know intrinsically we don't deserve. If you are tired, sad, yet always longing, bestselling author Jared C. Wilson has incredible news for you: that kind of love actually exists, and it is actually something you can experience--whether or not you're in a romantic relationship. In his signature reflective, conversational, and often humorous style, Wilson unpacks 1 Corinthians 13 to show us what real love looks like. Through engaging stories and touching anecdotes, he paints a picture of an extravagant God who not only puts the desire for love into our very souls but fulfills those desires in striking, life-changing ways.
