Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of St. Paul Divine Nature, we need not hesitate to allow that there is some truth in it - some truth, at least, as far as it concerns a great many disciples even of the purest creed. Christians, no doubt, there have been and are, whose conceptions of God are inadequate even to the verge of triviality and ehildishness - involving, when analysed, all sorts of moral impossi bilities and contradictions. When we think or speak of God as a Being whose govern ment and actions are easily comprehended and explained, or as a Man, infinitely greater, it may be, and wiser than ourselves, yet, like ourselves, full of partialities and petty schemes and unjust thoughts: when we so speak or think, we are fairly open to such a charge as this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Conception of Christianity Two important questions may be asked concerning St. Paul's Christian theology: Where did he get it? And, Whence do we Obtain our knowledge of it? It is with the latter of these questions that we are now to be occupied. By sources is here meant the literary materials available for becoming acquainted with the great Gentile apostle's characteristic way of thinking on the leading themes connected with the Christian faith. If we wanted to know, as far as is possible, all that St. Paul thought on any topic relating to the faith, we should have to regard all his extant Epistles as our sources, and our first task would be to ascertain to the best of our ability how many of the separate writings ascribed to him in the New Testament are authentic. If, on the other hand, our aim be, as it is, to determine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have endeavored to approach the subject with an open and unbiased mind so that the conclusions arrived at may be regarded as the result which the facts them selves warrant, and not the result of prejudice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earlier Epistles of St. Paul: Their Motive and Origin The difficulty which undoubtedly attends any attempt to understand the Epistles of St. Paul is largely due to the fact that they are letters; for the writer of a letter assumes the knowledge of a whole series of facts, which are, as he is quite aware, equally familiar to his correspondent and to himself. But as time goes on this knowledge is gradually forgotten, and what was originally quite plain becomes difficult and obscure; it has to be rediscovered from stray hints and from other documents by a process of laborious research, before it is possible for the letters to be read with anything approaching to the ease and intelligence possessed by those to whom they were originally sent. It is necessary to reconstruct the story of the motive and origin of the letters, and create a picture of the background of thought and practice against which they were set in the beginning. The following pages are an attempt to do this for the earlier Epistles of St. Paul. I have not tried to give a description of St. Paul's own thoughts - I trust that I may attempt this task later - but to reconstruct the background, a knowledge of which renders it possible to read the Epistles with intelligence; and for this purpose two main types of problems have been attacked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes From the Life of St. Paul This book, it is hoped, will meet a want long felt by many of the teachers in our Sunday-schools, It is essentially a class-book for our elder scholars, -and 'aims at giving such an account of the great Apostle of the Gentiles as will enable our young people to form some notion of the struggle amidst which the Christian religion was planted in the world. The writer kept steadily in view the fact that he was preparing a class-book to be read, not in one or two sittings, but in short portions, spread over many weeks. This will account for some repetitions which might otherwise seem out of place. At the same time, feeling that such a book might prove acceptable to many of the younger members of our congregations, the writer has tried to throw in the repetitions he thought necessary in the way least calculated to make them tedious to the more continuous reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Paul and the Ante-Nicene Church: An Unwritten Chapter of Church History A word to the few readers into whose hands this volume may come, may not be amiss. It is not a history of the Christian Church through the first two centuries, but simply what it purports to be, a chapter out of that history. Neither does it deal with the many contrasts between the Christianity of the New Testament and that of the following centuries, but only with the type of piety or the Christian character as set forth by St. Paul, and as it presents itself in the next centuries. This contrast in the minds of young and earnest students of 'church history excites surprise, and is a source, oftentimes, of much confusion and perplexity. It is to bring this problem to the full light, describe it, and, if possible, give some explanation as to its causes, that this work was written. The task was also undertaken with the hope that some one better qualified than the present writer might engage in a more thorough and exhaustive investigation of this most interesting phase in the history of the Early Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans God forbid that any words that ever drop from my lips should seem to cast the smallest shadow of doubt on that great truth, God so loved the world that He gave His Son!' But God forbid, equally, that any words of mine should seem to favour the, to me, . Repellent idea that the infinite love of God disregards the character of the man on whom it falls. There are manifestations of that loving heart which any man can receive; and each man gets as much of the love of God as it is possible to pour upon him. But granite rock does not drink in the dew as a flower does; and the nature of the man on whom God's love falls deter mines how much, and what manner of its manifesta tions shall pass into his true possession, and what Shall remain without. So, on the whole, we have to answer the questions, Does God love any? Does not God love all? Does God specially love some with the one monosyllable, Yes. And so, dear brethren, let us learn the path by which we can pass into that blessed community of those on whom the fullness and sweetness and tenderest tender ness of the Father's heart will fall. If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him.' Myths tell us that the light which, at the beginning, had been diffused through a nebulous mass, was next gathered into a sun. So the universal love of God is concentrated in Jesus Christ; and if we have Him we have it; and if we have faith we have Him, and can say, 'neither life, nor death, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.'
