Book excerpt: Papers presented at the Thirteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1999 (see also Studia Patristica 34, 35, 36 and 37). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Book Synopsis Striving With Grace by : Aaron J Kleist
Download or read book Striving With Grace written by Aaron J Kleist and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-11-29 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether or not our decisions and efforts make a difference in an uncertain and uncontrollable world had enormous significance for writers in Anglo-Saxon England. Striving with Grace looks at seven authors who wrote either in Latin or Old English, and the ways in which they sought to resolve this fundamental question. For Anglo-Saxon England, as for so much of the medieval West, the problem of individual will was complicated by a widespread theistic tradition that influenced writers, thinkers, and their hypotheses. Aaron J Kleist examines the many factors that produced strikingly different, though often complementary, explanations of free will in early England. Having first established the perspectives of Augustine, he considers two Church Fathers who rivalled Augustine's impact on early England, Gregory the Great and the Venerable Bede, and reconstructs their influence on later English writers. He goes on to examine Alfred the Great's Old English Boethius and Lantfred of Winchester's Carmen de libero arbitrio, and the debt that both texts owe to Boethius' classic De consolatione Philosophiae. Finally, Kleist discusses Wulfstan the Homilist and Ælfric of Eynsham, two seminal writers of late Anglo-Saxon England. Striving with Grace shows that all of these authors, despite striking differences in their sources and logic, underscore humanity's need for grace even as they labour to affirm the legitimacy of human effort.

Keating and Thomas Joseph White have gathered here a selection of essays that consider how God's suffering or lack thereof can relate to our redemption from and through human suffering. The contributors - Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox - tread carefully but surely over this thorny ground, defending diverse and often opposing perspectives. Divine Impassibility and the Mystery of Human Suffering is an excellent contribution to the latest stage in this difficult and important theological controversy."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Three Powers in Heaven by : Emanuel Fiano
Download or read book Three Powers in Heaven written by Emanuel Fiano and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at how Christianity and Judaism became two distinct religions through the parting of their intellectual traditions How, when, and why did Christianity and Judaism diverge into separate religions? Emanuel Fiano reinterprets the parting of the ways between Jews and Christians as a split between two intellectual traditions, a split that emerged within the context of ancient debates about Jesus's relationship to God and the world. Fiano explores how Christianity moved away from Judaism through the development of new practices for religious inquiry. By demonstrating that the constitution of communal borders coincided with the elaboration of different methods for producing religious knowledge, the author shows that Christian theological controversies, often thought to teach us nothing beyond the history of dogma, can cast light on the broader religious landscape of late antiquity. Three Powers in Heaven thus marks not only a historical but also a methodological intervention in the study of the parting of the ways and in scholarship on ancient religion.

Book Synopsis Huitième congrès international d'études coptes (Paris 2004) by : Anne Boud'hors
Download or read book Huitième congrès international d'études coptes (Paris 2004) written by Anne Boud'hors and published by Editions De Boccard. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Jewish Believers in Jesus by : Oskar Skarsaune
Download or read book Jewish Believers in Jesus written by Oskar Skarsaune and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the role of the Jewish believers in the first five centuries C.E., this important study re-examines some of the most foundational questions for our understanding of the formation of the early church. Who were the Jewish believers, and how did they understand themselves in relation to the Gentile believers and the Jewish community? Was the border area they occupied between Jew and Gentile a hospitable and welcoming one or was it one in which two incompatible identities clashed? The essays in this volume question the traditional paradigm that saw an early "parting of the ways" between Judaism and Christianity and suggests instead that some Jewish believers in Jesus stayed closely integrated with the Jewish community even while their theology differed.

Book Synopsis Answer to the Pelagians by : Saint Augustine (of Hippo)
Download or read book Answer to the Pelagians written by Saint Augustine (of Hippo) and published by New City Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine was writing the Unfinished Work in Answer to Julian, published in this volume, when he died in August 430. The Unfinished Work is a rebuttal of Julian of Eclanum's To Florus, an eight-book text in defense of Pelagianism, which had by then been officially condemned by the Church. Augustine and Julian had previously written responses to excerpts of one another's work, though not in direct correspondence. In Unfinished Work, however, Augustine writes as though speaking to Julian directly, making for an engaging and clear read. He quotes each point of To Florus to which he responds, so the reader gains a comprehensive picture of his opponent's views. Once again, Augustine defends grace as a gift from God and Jesus as the savior of all humanity.
