Book excerpt: Summary Book released on the occasion of 750th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Swami Vedanta Desikan. This book contains basic tenets of Sri Vaishnavism . This answers all questions like why, what, when, how , where and who. This book is intended for all generations who have doubts about all these questions. This is a crux of Swami Desikan's Philosophy, doctrines and principles. This book is written in a lucid form with clear steps for performing duties as Brahmin. Authors NotesLife to anyone around the world becomes a complex phenomenon at some stage or the other--questions pop up - Given the identical conditions --why should I be the sufferer? Why not some one else ? How can you address such a perplexity ? Swami Vedanta Desikan not only addressed such questions but also elucidated a way of life which is practicable even in today's materialistic world . Realities of our lives are realised mostly through the mechanism of "Pratyaksham"--through our five sensory perceptions , inference "Anumanam" and also "sabdam" sound . One need not go transcending over these three and enter the world of illusion at all. A spiritual practice encompassing our ground realities we observe daily are good enough to elevate you to higher planes of realisation in this mundane world.A unique spiritual concept based on such fundamentals -anchored on Vedic authoritative Texts ,that can be easily practiced ,was an exemplary contribution by Swami Ramanuja, 1000 years back. He did not evolve a hypothetical philosophical concept but a practicable guided way of life.He demonstrated to the world that it is feasible to live with all those ephemeral things around us but gradually elevate oneself to a peaceful life .Swami Nigamanta Desikan who lived from 1268 to 1369 elucidated further what Swami Ramanuja unravelled from the Vedic Texts . Logic can take one only up to a point and some one can always disprove and demolish an apparently "proven" thing at some later time by some other logic . Instead of endless questioning , a regulated a life within the frame work ; viz a relationship between you and that of a Supreme Being -Lord Narayana , through an abject surrender mechanism(saranagati) is a elegantly workable approach. This does not call for any great education of complex interpretations but simple mechanism of Faith -in the relationship between you and the Supreme Lord Narayana. A perpetual consciousness of such a relationship will slowly and steadily elevate you to upper consciousness ---which is a peaceful life in this mundane world itself . Swami Desikan has evolved a step by step approach to graduate oneself -like staircase to reach an exalted level of supreme consciousness , not just in this world alone but also the life beyond .This book "SriVedanta Dsesikan on the Principles of Vaishanvism" is a simple and easily readable one for an aspiring person to seek a peaceful ,contented life . Vaishnavism is a not yet another"ism" but a definite methodology to a live a balanced life ,with all its vagaries surrounding each of us -but still find a peace within. No one can change what is going to happen but this book guides you to the way you can face a life with all its complexities.,This book lists the steps one can adopt to earn money for a living, human resources, warning signals one could be careful about and also preventive methods ,rendering service to the Lord and to the fellow bretheren, eating habits and many other normal routine things but in a better disciplined way. Essentially this is a guide /reference book to navigate you through a practical way of living in peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year is the 751th birth anniversary (1268 AD- 1369 AD) of the famous poet, philosopher and dialectical genius, Swāmi Vedānta Deśika. He lived for 101 years. By the age of 20 he became proficient in all branches of spiritual knowledge. He had mastered the Vedās, Śāstrās and Āgamās and the Divya Prabandhams of the Āzhwārs. His forte was logic, poetry and philosophy. He wrote extensively in Sanskrit, Tamizh, Prākrit and Manipravāla and composed numerous devotional hymns which reflected his poetic genius. He received the honorific titles of 'Vedāntācāryar" from Lord Rańganāthā and "Sarvatantra Swatantrar" from the Divine Mother Śrī Rańganāyaki. Swāmi Deśika was a polyglot and an author of 166 granthās. Besides strengthening and further propagating the Viśișhtādvaitic philosophy of Śrī Rāmānuja, he established beyond any doubt the doctrine of Prapatti (self surrender) as the guaranteed route to mōkșa (liberation). This book is a translation of 73 verses composed in Sanskrit by Prativādi Bhayańkaram Aņņangarācāryār Swāmi (Aņņan) who was the disciple of Nāyanārācāryār, son of Swāmi Deśika. This ode on Swāmi Vedānta Deśika contains what needs to been known about Swāmi Deśika's greatness, the depth of meaning in his works, the faith in him of his devotees and efforts made by his opponents to demean him which boomeranged and put such people to shame. Some of the great Ācāryās who came after Swāmi Deśika quoted several verses from 'Saptati Ratnamalika' in their writings and thus gave it a pride of place among other literary works.

Sri Ramanuja is one of the noted commentators on the Vedanta Sutras of Badarayana and the Bhagavad Gita. This has brought him recognition as one of the greatest exponents of Vedanta from the Vaishnava point of view. Swami Adidevananda, one of the distinguished scholarly monks of the Ramakrishna Order who retained his inherent Sri Vaishnava heritage, has translated the original verses and Sri Ramanuja’s commentary into English. This book is of special importance because it is the only English translation now available with the original Sanskrit commentary as well. The book opens with meditation on the Gita followed by the Gitartha-sangraha of Sri Yamunacharya with English translation. Swami Tapasyananda, who was a scholarly monk with deep devotional temperament and one of the Vice-Presidents of the Ramakrishna Order, has written a scholarly introduction to this work.

Book excerpt: Bhakti Schools of Vedānta’, of which this volume is a part, is a work intended to bring to the notice of the general reader that it is not correct to equate Vedānta exclusively with Advaita Vedānta, associated with Śrī Śaṅkarācārya. There are several other Ācāryas who have expounded the Vedānta in quite a different way and whose status as teachers of Vedānta requires recognition. The personages treated in the above book are Sri Rāmānuja, Śrī Nimbārka, Śrī Vallabha, Śrī Madhva and Śrī Caitanya. Besides their theo-philosophies, detailed accounts of their lives are given. For it is the support of their lives that gives more authority to their teachings than the philosophical writings of mere armchair philosophers. The frame-work of their lives is mainly historical, but most of the miraculous and extraordinary incidents mentioned in them may largely be projections of the pious imaginations of their followers. These too are to be respectfully received and not pooh-poohed as mere cock and bull stories. It is the way of the Indian mind to convey the idea that these Ācāryas are endowed with extraordinary powers. But for this, their teachings could not have survived through so many centuries influencing the lives of innumerable generations of men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive examination of the underpinnings of the Shaivite Tradition • Reveals the influence of Shaivism on the Western world • Discusses Shaivism’s understanding of sacred sexuality • Presents the connections between Vedic poetry and metaphysics In Shiva and the Primordial Tradition, Alain Daniélou explores the relationship between Shaivism and the Western world. Shaivite philosophy does not oppose theology, cosmology, and science because it recognizes that their common aim is to seek to understand and explain the nature of the world. In the Western world, the idea of bridging the divide between science and religion is just beginning to touch the edges of mainstream thought. This rare collection of the late author’s writings contains several never-before-published articles and offers an in-depth look at the many facets of the Samkhya, the cosmologic doctrines of the Shaivite tradition. Daniélou provides important revelations on subjects such as the science of dreams, the role of poetry and sexuality in the sacred, the personality of the great Shankara, and the Shaivite influence on the Scythians and the Parthians (and by extension, the Hellenic world in general). Providing a convincing argument in favor of the polytheistic approach, he explains that monotheism is merely the deification of individualism--the separation of humanity from nature--and that by acknowledging the sacred in everything, we can recognize the imprint of the primordial tradition.
