Book excerpt: Whether they're starting high school for the first time, devising their own Winter Olympics, or working out ways to foil their parents, the three Fox kids never fail to create pandemonium. Since FoxTrot hit syndication in 1988, the strip has rewarded its millions of faithful readers with daily doses of family fun.Now established as one of America's most popular comic strips, FoxTrot cleverly conveys the identifiably goofy goings-on in this crazy household. At the core of much of the strip's wild humor is whiz kid Jason, age 10, who tortures his parents, Roger and Andy, and two teenage siblings, Peter and Paige, with his computer skills and his pet Iguana, Quincy. One strip in FoxTrot's newest collection, Your Momma Thinks Square Roots Are Vegetables, illustrates the family dynamics especially well: When Peter makes a racy call to girlfriend Denise on his cell phone, he's shocked to find out he's actually dialed his mother. As he enters the living room, Jason not-so-innocently says, "Oh, dear. Did someone reprogram your speed-dial list again?"Day after day, FoxTrot continues to deliver fresh, irreverent, and wacky humor. You're Momma Thinks Square Roots Are Vegetables continues the tradition with its look at family life through the eyes of Bill Amend.

Book excerpt: Simplify Square Roots This book is meant to teach you almost everything you need to know so that you can seamlessly simplify algebraic expressions composed of square roots. Square Roots is a collection of 50 carefully selected and solved exercises. All the examples are solved step-by-step, without a step skipped. Not only are the solutions easy to read and follow, but there are plenty of detailed explanations in plain English as well. There is nothing for you to solve on your own. We did the solving. All that is expected from you is to do the learning. Go over the easy to understand examples and let your brain enjoy and digest the solutions. If you are a beginner student, there are many easy examples so that you can build a strong foundation. If you are an advanced student, there are lots of challenging and refreshing examples too. Whether you are a beginner or advanced student, you will benefit greatly from this book and all confusion about simplifying square root expressions will be removed, and your confidence in manipulating algebraic expressions will increase. You will learn: What type of operation square roots are How to perform basic operations on square roots, such as addition, multiplication etc. How to simplify complex Math expressions which contain square roots, cubic roots etc. How to express square roots in other forms, such as decimal, exponential etc. Other Algebra techniques Consider this book as a personal voiceless Tutor, yet very loud in providing clarity. This book-Tutor is trying very hard to make it easy and fun while you are sharpening your skills on how to simplify complex Square Root expressions.

Prealgebra 2e is designed to meet scope and sequence requirements for a one-semester prealgebra course. The text introduces the fundamental concepts of algebra while addressing the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Each topic builds upon previously developed material to demonstrate the cohesiveness and structure of mathematics. Students who are taking basic mathematics and prealgebra classes in college present a unique set of challenges. Many students in these classes have been unsuccessful in their prior math classes. They may think they know some math, but their core knowledge is full of holes. Furthermore, these students need to learn much more than the course content. They need to learn study skills, time management, and how to deal with math anxiety. Some students lack basic reading and arithmetic skills. The organization of Prealgebra makes it easy to adapt the book to suit a variety of course syllabi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today complex numbers have such widespread practical use--from electrical engineering to aeronautics--that few people would expect the story behind their derivation to be filled with adventure and enigma. In An Imaginary Tale, Paul Nahin tells the 2000-year-old history of one of mathematics' most elusive numbers, the square root of minus one, also known as i. He recreates the baffling mathematical problems that conjured it up, and the colorful characters who tried to solve them. In 1878, when two brothers stole a mathematical papyrus from the ancient Egyptian burial site in the Valley of Kings, they led scholars to the earliest known occurrence of the square root of a negative number. The papyrus offered a specific numerical example of how to calculate the volume of a truncated square pyramid, which implied the need for i. In the first century, the mathematician-engineer Heron of Alexandria encountered I in a separate project, but fudged the arithmetic; medieval mathematicians stumbled upon the concept while grappling with the meaning of negative numbers, but dismissed their square roots as nonsense. By the time of Descartes, a theoretical use for these elusive square roots--now called "imaginary numbers"--was suspected, but efforts to solve them led to intense, bitter debates. The notorious i finally won acceptance and was put to use in complex analysis and theoretical physics in Napoleonic times. Addressing readers with both a general and scholarly interest in mathematics, Nahin weaves into this narrative entertaining historical facts and mathematical discussions, including the application of complex numbers and functions to important problems, such as Kepler's laws of planetary motion and ac electrical circuits. This book can be read as an engaging history, almost a biography, of one of the most evasive and pervasive "numbers" in all of mathematics. Book excerpt: We have designed and written this book. not as a text nor for the professional mathematician. but for the general reader who is naturally attracted to mathematics as a great intellec tual challenge. and for the special reader whose work requires him to have a deeper understanding of mathematics than he acquired in school. Readers in the first group are drawn to mental recreational activities such as chess. bridge. and various types of puzzles. but they generally do not respond enthusiastically to mathematics because of their unhappy learning experiences with it during their school days. The readers in the secondgrouptum to mathematics as a necessity. but with painful resignation and considerable apprehension regarding their abilities to master the branch ofmathematics they need in their work. In either case. the fear of and revulsion to mathematics felt by these readers usually stem from their earlier frustrating encounters with it. vii viii PREFACE This book will show these readers that these fears, frustrations, and general antipathy are unwarranted, for, as stated, it is not a textbook full of long, boring proofs and hundreds of problems, rather it is an intellectual adventure, to be read with pleasure. It was written to be easily accessible and with concern for the mental tranquilityofthe reader who willexperience considerable fulfillment when he/she sees the simplicity of basic mathematics. The emphasis throughout this book is on the clear explanation of mathematical con cepts.
