Book Synopsis The Dawn of Carrier Strike by : David Hobbs
Download or read book The Dawn of Carrier Strike written by David Hobbs and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of a British pilot set against the backdrop of the Royal Navy’s fight to regain control of its aviation after the First World War. The establishment of the RAF came at a cost—and it was the Royal Navy that paid the price. In 1918 it had been pre-eminent in the technology and tactics of employing aircraft at sea, but once it lost control of its own air power, it struggled to make the RAF prioritize naval interests, in the process losing ground to the rival naval air forces of Japan and the United States. This book documents that struggle through the cash-strapped 1920s and ’30s, culminating in the Navy regaining control of its aviation in 1937, but too late to properly prepare for the impending war. However, despite the lack of resources, British naval flying had made progress, especially in the advancement of carrier strike doctrine. These developments are neatly illustrated by the experiences of Lieutenant William Lucy, who was to become Britain’s first accredited air ‘ace’ of the war and to lead the world’s first successful dive-bombing of a major warship. Making extensive use of the family archive, this book also reproduces many previously unseen photographs from Lucy’s album, showing many aspects of life in the Fleet Air Arm up to the end of the Norway campaign. The inter-war concentration on carrier strike would be spectacularly vindicated during World War II—and it was the Royal Navy that had led the way.

Book Synopsis Venom: De Havilland Venom and Sea Venom by : David Watkins
Download or read book Venom: De Havilland Venom and Sea Venom written by David Watkins and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is true to say that the Venom carried out more operational ground attack sorties than any other RAF aircraft since the Second World War, its history has hitherto been sadly neglected or misreported. With the co-operation and assistance of many former Service and civilian pilots, the record can finally be set straight in what is the definitive history of this ground-attack, all weather and naval strike fighter. David Watkins discusses the problems of the trials and development programme and takes a detailed look at the aircraft's operational service with the air arms of Australia, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Iraq and Venezuela. Of particular interest is new information relating to the Sea Venom's career with the Fleet Air Arm and the catastrophic wing failures and engine fires that plagued the early Second Tactical Air Force Venoms. It also contains a comprehensive account of Venom sorties during the Suez campaign, the 'Firedog' operations in Malaya and the protracted anti-terrorist offensive in Aden and Oman. These accounts throw new light on the conflicts and have been compiled from interviews, private papers and personal accounts. Accompanying the text is a wealth of photographs, line drawings and maps, a number of which are from private collections and are previously unpublished.

Download or read book Ship Busters! written by Ralph Barker and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “vividly told” history of torpedo attacks from the air in the Second World War, by a member of the Royal Air Force (The Sunday Times). Low-level strikes against enemy shipping by torpedo-carrying aircraft were perhaps the most dangerous forms of air attack developed during WWII, and few isolated actions had such a direct impact on naval and military actions. This book tells the story of the RAF men involved, from the early attacks by single Beauforts off the Dutch and Norwegian coasts to the massed assaults of later years by the famous “strike-wings.” The author, who joined the RAF in 1940 as a wireless operator/ air gunner, and served in the UK, the Middle East, and West Africa, and whose career on torpedo work ended in a crash in which his pilot and navigator were killed, includes many historic actions: the lone moonlight attack by a twenty-two-year-old flight sergeant on the pocket-battleship Lützow; the torpedoing of the Gneisena in Brest harbor; the Channel Dash of the Scharnhorst, Gneisena, and Prinz Eugen and the heroic Swordfish attacks; and the vital strikes from Malta in 1942 against the Italian fleet and the supply shipping of the Afrika Korps. The result is a fascinating book, vivid in its true picture of aircrew life, stirring in its descriptions of heroic actions, intensely moving in its record of human endeavor.

Download or read book Bondo written by Zoe Dawson and published by Zoe Dawson. This book was released on 2023-01-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do aircraft carriers and Navy SEALs have in common? Plenty and Bondo and the team head to the USS John Paul Jones to train the crew and innovate the process of fighting battles with near-peer adversaries like Russia and China. The world was changing and the United States Navy, a formidable power on the ocean with the capability of striking inland, needed to keep pace. Both superpowers were busy fortifying against airstrikes from carriers, and Special Warfare Operators who were adept at getting into places and eliminating obstacles were their best lethal weapons. Bondo has mixed feelings about this mission. The USS John Paul Jones was Petty Officer First Class Cameron Ryan’s duty station. The engineer had helped them complete a mission recently and thrown Bondo into personal crisis when he found himself deeply attracted to the sassy redhead. But why was he worrying? An aircraft carrier had thousands of sailors on board. What were the odds they would even come into contact? With a huge division of aircraft mechanics, why did they have to divert her from fixing F-18s to working on the specialized subs the Navy SEALs deployed? Cameron wasn’t exactly trying to avoid the tall, gorgeous, dangerous-to-her-heart man, but being in the Navy and deployed at sea made a relationship with anyone complicated. Bondo was especially problematic because he had some issues with his past and the loss of his wife and child. To get over those kinds of hurdles, long separations hindered intimacy and forging bonds. Maybe hot sex would alleviate their interest and an affair would eventually cool. But could she take that chance?
