Book excerpt: When I agreed to go to the big city to discuss the delivery of our Christmas trees for the holiday season, I expected traffic, the horizon blocked by the skyline, and unbearable noise. I did not expect to see Rose O'Brien, the woman who broke my heart seven years ago, let alone have to work with her now. Same pretty pink smile, same contagious laugh, same piercing green-flecked hazel eyes that I've loved. Still love. Rose is determined that the city life is all she wants. How can this small-town lumberjack compete with the big city? Spruced Up for Big City is a small-town, second-chance, opposites attract, standalone novella romance. It's the fourth book in the Timberheart Grove series.

Book excerpt: True tales of celebrity hijinks are served up with an equal measure of Hollywood history, movie-star mayhem, and a frothy mix of forty cocktail recipes. Humphrey Bogart got himself arrested for protecting his drinking buddies, who happened to be a pair of stuffed pandas. Ava Gardner would water-ski to the set of Night of the Iguana holding a towline in one hand and a cocktail in the other. Barely legal Natalie Wood would let Dennis Hopper seduce her if he provided a bathtub full of champagne. Bing Crosby’s ill-mannered antics earned him the nickname “Binge Crosby.” And sweet Mary Pickford stashed liquor in hydrogen peroxide bottles during Prohibition. From the frontier days of silent film up to the wild auteur period of the 1970s, Mark Bailey has pillaged the vaults of Hollywood history and lore to dig up the true—and often surprising—stories of seventy of our most beloved actors, directors, and screenwriters at their most soused. Bite-size biographies are followed by ribald anecdotes and memorable quotes. If a star had a favorite cocktail, the recipe is included. Films with the most outrageous booze-soaked stories, like Apocalypse Now, From Here to Eternity, and The Misfits, are featured, along with the legendary watering holes of the day (and the recipes for their signature drinks). Edward Hemingway’s portraits complete this spirited look at America’s most iconic silver-screen legends. “This book is like being at the best dinner party in the world. And I thought I was the first person to put a bar in my closet. I was clearly born during the wrong era.” —Chelsea Handler

Book excerpt: A beautifully written and evocative memoir of pain and redemption, of hurt and healing, from an actress whose private life and personal choices have made her a household name. "My life is a life movies are made of," wrote Anne Heche in the proposal for her memoir. Yet what is truly surprising about Heche is that the most publicized event of her past -- her romance with Ellen DeGeneres -- is only one development in a fascinating and difficult life that has included more than its share of heartache and tragedy. Heche's memoir reveals the woman behind the headlines, one who has conquered overwhelming odds. Far from a celebrity memoir, this is an empowering and thought-provoking book guaranteed to surprise and inspire.

Book excerpt: This concluding volume of the Literary Trails of North Carolina trilogy takes readers into an ancient land of pale sand, dense forests, and expansive bays, through towns older than our country and rich in cultural traditions. Here, writers reveal lives long tied to the land and regularly troubled by storms and tell tales of hardship, hard work, and freedom. Eighteen tours lead readers from Raleigh to the Dismal Swamp, the Outer Banks, and across the Sandhills as they explore the region's connections to over 250 writers of fiction, poetry, plays, and creative nonfiction. Along the way, Georgann Eubanks brings to life the state's rich literary heritage as she explores these writers' connection to place and reveals the region's vibrant local culture. Excerpts invite readers into the authors' worlds, and web links offer resources for further exploration. Featured authors include A. R. Ammons, Gerald Barrax, Charles Chesnutt, Clyde Edgerton, Philip Gerard, Kaye Gibbons, Harriet Jacobs, Jill McCorkle, Michael Parker, and Bland Simpson. Literary Trails of North Carolina is a project of the North Carolina Arts Council.

Book excerpt: On September 25, 1944, Hitler attempted to shore up his faltering forces by creating the Volkssturm or People's Army. His new draft called into service all remaining able-bodied men, including those whose civilian labor had previously been deemed indispensable. Among the latter was an East Prussian farmer named Hans Thiel, who suddenly found himself on the Eastern front, fighting not to bring glory to the Nazi Party (for which he felt at best a troubled resignation) but to save his country from destruction. With the defeat of the Germans, Thiel was taken prisoner by the advancing Soviet forces. From the closing days of World War II through three years of postwar captivity, this memoir details the experiences of Hans Thiel. Beginning with the realities of agrarian life during World War II, it then describes Thiel's conscription, his combat experiences, and his life as a postwar prisoner, held first by the Red Army and then transferred to camps under Polish control. The atrocities these prisoners suffered at the hands of their captors--as retaliation for German military war crimes--are discussed in detail. The book includes a glossary (general terms), an appendix commenting on German agrarian policy under the Third Reich, a second appendix discussing the difficulties of tracing Thiel's route through the war-torn countryside, and a third appendix of placenames. Photographs and maps are also included.

Book excerpt: Mitzi and Goldies reunion in San Francisco is filled with joy and sorrow. After an absence of 48 years time falls away as though they never parted. The dark cloud is an illness in his family. The daily e-mails continue, more meaningful than ever, as Mitzi comforts and consoles Goldie. Their bond deepens, enhanced by the physical intimacy they have shared. Goldie sends Mitzi two birthday gifts. Each element of the jewel is imbued with significance which he delineates, the circle of diamonds indicating they have come full circle, are joined together again. The second gift is a photo album Goldie made, recreating their history, with pictures of places in their home town. On the last photo, of his school locker, he writes This is where we met between classes for 90 seconds, because we couldnt bear to be apart. Mitzi breaks her foot. At home, in pain, she reflects on Goldies marital status and writes him an e-mail saying In my experience married men dont leave, they simply break your heart. Please dont break my heart. He takes offense that she would question his integrity and motivation and suggests they go on hiatus until he has progress to report. She is devastated, sends a flurry of e-mails, begs forgiveness. They continue stronger than before. A new trip is planned, this time to Washington, D.C. It turns out to be both heaven and hell. It is heaven because the relationship is so strong, so close. He opens his heart about how bad his marriage is and his plans to end it. It is hell because they are both unwell. He suggests a third trip, to Niagara Falls. She knows this is the trip that will make all the difference, will cement their God given union. Then the unthinkable happens.

On a raw spring day, Wen goes to Owl Island—the summer home of the illustrious Gage family—to deliver a package. It’s addressed to the family’s oldest daughter, Estelle, a woman Wen has long admired from afar. Estelle Gage fled to the islands seeking solitude and an escape. With the deadline for her latest novel fast approaching, her sole focus is to write. But when the handsome mailboat captain shows up on her doorstep, writing is no longer the only thing on her mind. A steady stream of packages continues to bring Wen back to Owl Island—and to Estelle. But as summer looms, so does the impending arrival of Estelle’s family. The return of the Gages will most certainly spell the end to Estelle and Wen’s idyllic time cloistered together on the island. What will that mean for their budding relationship?
