Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "original" Cocker Spaniel, the English Cocker Spaniel is actually the most popular Cocker Spaniel on the planet, with a thriving following in most countries around the world. Designated as a separate breed from America's Cocker Spaniel in 1936, thanks in large part to the support of the breed's patroness in the U.S., Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, the English Cocker Spaniel has been prized for his merry disposition, impressive trainability, and sensible nature for generations. The history of the breed, as told by breeder and author Haja van Wessem, encompasses the story of both Cocker Spaniel breeds and provides insight into how the breeds became separate entities. The characteristics chapter discusses the breed's much-prized personality and physical characteristics as well as its coat of many colors (illustrated by useful charts that depict how colors are produced).New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, exercise, and grooming/trimming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

You’ve seen them in movies and commercials, and read about them in books. You’ve probably even seen their famous depiction as rescue dogs that carry a barrel around their neck. Saint Bernards have even been given the title “nanny dog.” What’s the truth behind all these depictions of the breed? Would trying to fit one of these giant dogs into your house be right for your family and lifestyle? Just how big can they get, and how much food does a dog this large consume? This breed has piqued the curiosity of dog lovers everywhere. While many find that large-breed dogs can be intimidating, Saint Bernards are one of the easiest large-breed dogs to care for. They aren’t picky eaters, they don’t require tons of exercise, and they are huge on cuddling. We get that navigating puppyhood can be tough. This is especially true when your new two-month-old puppy is already the size of a Shih Tzu! Maybe you’ve even gone the extra mile and decided to adopt an adult Saint Bernard. You’re probably wondering what all goes into caring for your giant new roommate. You’ve come to the right place to learn how to live with your very own Saint Bernard. These sweet-tempered dogs are much more than the movies depict. Like any breed, they come with their own complications, quirks, and slobbery kisses. In this book, you will learn about bringing a puppy home, dealing with an adult Saint Bernard, and even how to care for them into seniorhood. Whether you don’t know if your home is big enough or you’re trying to find the right food for your puppy, this guide will give you everything you ever wanted to know about Saint Bernards and more!

Book excerpt: The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog that is a member of the Spaniel grouping. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Swamp Poodle, ' the 'LBD' (Little Brown Dog) and simply as the 'Boykin.' The Boykin Spaniel originates from the United States of America. The breed was originally developed for the purpose of hunting turkeys and ducks in the Wateree River Swamp located in South Carolina. However due to their stamina in hot weather and eagerness to hunt, the Boykin Spaniel was quickly used for dove hunts and to hunt pheasants and other larger game. The Boykin Spaniel is actually the state dog of South Carolina. The Boykin Spaniel is slightly larger than the English Cocker Spaniel but has a much heavier body. The breed has no standard coat type or coloration due to the breed recent background. It is not uncommon for the Boykin Spaniel's coat to be curly in a similar style to the American Water Spaniel's coat, fine and straight like a Field Spaniel's coat and shorter and straighter like a Labrador Retriever's coat. As a whole, the Boykin Spaniel is known to be a friendly, sociable and loyal breed that makes it a perfect family pet. It is important to note that the Boykin Spaniel is a highly energetic breed. If it is not exercised properly it is highly likely that a Boykin Spaniel will develop destructive behaviors, due to boredom and having an abundance of excess energy. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Boykin Spaniel's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Boykin Spaniel, raising your Boykin Spaniel from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Boykin Spaniel: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Boykin Spaniel," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Boykin Spaniel owner.
