Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the early 1830s the old school of Gothic literature was exhausted. Late Romanticism, emphasising as it did the uncertainties of personality and imagination, gave it a new lease of life. Gothic—the literature of disturbance and uncertainty—now produced works that reflected domestic fears, sexual crimes, drug filled hallucinations, the terrible secrets of middle class marriage, imperial horror at alien invasion, occult demonism and the insanity of psychopaths. It was from the 1830s onwards that the old gothic castle gave way to the country house drawing room, the dungeon was displaced by the sewers of the city and the villains of early novels became the familiar figures of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula, Dorian Grey and Jack the Ripper. After the death of Prince Albert (1861), the Gothic became darker, more morbid, obsessed with demonic lovers, blood sucking ghouls, blood stained murderers and deranged doctors. Whilst the gothic architecture of the Houses of Parliament and the new Puginesque churches upheld a Victorian ideal of sobriety, Christianity and imperial destiny, Gothic literature filed these new spaces with a dread that spread like a plague to America, France, Germany and even Russia. From 1830 to 1914, the period covered by this volume, we saw the emergence of the greats of Gothic literature and the supernatural from Edgar Allan Poe to Emily Bronte, from Sheridan Le Fanu to Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson. Contributors also examine the fin-de-siècle dreamers of decadence such as Arthur Machen, M P Shiel and Vernon Lee and their obsession with the occult, folklore, spiritualism, revenants, ghostly apparitions and cosmic annihilation. This volume explores the period through the prism of architectural history, urban studies, feminism, 'hauntology' and much more. 'Horror', as Poe teaches us, 'is the soul of the plot'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intriguing study of a unique and unsettling cultural phenomenon in Victorian England. WINNER of the 2013 Katharine Briggs Award NEW LOWER PRICE This book uses the nineteenth-century legend of Spring-Heeled Jack to analyse and challenge current notions of Victorian popular cultures. Starting as oral rumours, this supposedly supernatural entity moved from rural folklore to metropolitan press sensation, co-existing in literary and theatrical forms before finally degenerating into a nursery lore bogeyman to frighten children. A mercurial and unfixed cultural phenomenon, Spring-Heeled Jack found purchase in both older folkloric traditions and emerging forms of entertainment. Through this intriguing study of a unique and unsettling figure, Karl Bell complicates our appreciation of the differences, interactions and similarities between various types of popular culture between 1837 and 1904. The book draws upon a rich variety of primary source material including folklorist accounts, street ballads, several series of "penny dreadful" stories (and illustrations), journals, magazines, newspapers, comics, court accounts, autobiographies and published reminiscences. The Legend of Spring-Heeled Jack is impressively researched social history and provides a fascinating insight into Victorian cultures. It will appeal to anyone with an interest in nineteenth-century English social and cultural history, folklore or literature. Karl Bell is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Portsmouth.

Book excerpt: E.S. Turner's first book, published in 1948, is a wholly original, richly researched and uncommonly insightful study of a somewhat disreputable genre: the 'Boys' Weekly' papers commonly known as 'penny dreadfuls.' 'A classic of its kind... [Turner] ploughed through back numbers of the old blood-and-thunder adventure magazines specialising in cliffhanger serials; the young hero would be left hanging over a cliff in a totally impossible situation, which would be easily resolved in the next issue: 'With one bound Jack was free.' Social history had never been as much fun or, with three extra printings in its first week - such was the demand - as profitable.' Jonathan Sale, Guardian 'Some people felt that E.S. Turner may have invented a new kind of book - the popular social history, very British, very funny, but written with a glistening elegance.' Andrew O'Hagan, London Review of Books

This quickly acquired reputation was the result, probably, of the veil of mystery which shrouded the identity of the man who was known on all hands as the Terror of London. a

Book excerpt: This BOOK IS A RETELLING OF A POLICE ACCOUNT BURIED IN THE ENDLESS FILES OF JOHNGRIFFIN. INTEREstingLY ENOUGH, THE REPORT WAS NEARLY WITHHELD, AND IT WAS ONLYWITH MUCH PERSuasion THAT WE WERE ABLE TO OBTAIN IT. THE EVENTS YOU ARE ABOUTTO BE TOLD OF ARE SAID TO BE LEGEND, AND MANY WOULD SCOFF AT THEY'REAUTHENTICITY. BUT THE SHADOW OF THE PHANTOM ATTACKER OF THIS STORY WAS ALL TOOREAL. 1800'S LONDON WAS IN A TURBULENT STATE, PLAGUED BY POVERTY, THEINDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, AND FEAR OF JACK THE RIPPER. BUT MANY YEARS BEFORE THERIPPER, A GHOULISH CHARACTER WITH MANY PARALLELS WAS ALREADY TERRorizING THECOMMUNITY. THEY CALLED HIM BY MULTIPLE NAMES, THE MOST PREVALENT OF WHICH, WAS"SPRING HEELED JACK". HE ATTACKED WOMEN, HE FRIGHTENED CHILDREN, AND HE SLAPPEDAND JEERED AT MEN, ALL WHILE LAUGHING INCESSANTLY. Who was he? Nobody knows. He was far too fast too be caught, too clever to trap, and too strange tocomprehend. Thus, his identity remains a secret. Of everything said about him, thestrangest bits are the stories of his abilities. He was said to breathe fire. Helooked as ugly and frail as a corpse, and yet he could clear an over ten footwall with no devices to assist him. Some would say he did this by artificialmeans, and maybe they're right. Some would attribute his feats to masshysteria, and yet that's rather hard to swallow. We should, however thatnothing like him has resurfaced. But what about our story? Here reader, you must draw your own conclusions. I cannot sway your trueinstincts. For, if we all went along with everything, if we all believedeverything we were told to believe, then the world would be a whole lot moreboring now wouldn't it?Now, sit back and Enjoy this, the first installment of..."the terror of londontrilogy".Jack e. brix.
