Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a May 1972 study in central Alberta, 13 0.5 ha plots of semimature trembling aspen were burned experimentally under various conditions to provide new information on fire behaviour and impact, with particular regard to aspen ecosystems. Fire data were documented for all plots, particularly head fire rates of spread and frontal fire intensities. The following August an assessment was made of the impact of burning on aspen overstory mortality and understory vegetation response. In May 1978 two of the plots were jointly reburned. The August survey that followed assessed the effects of the reburning.

This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of the direct and indirect mechanisms by which fire and climate interact to influence carbon cycling in North American boreal forests. The first section summarizes the information needed to understand and manage fires' effects on the ecology of boreal forests and its influence on global climate change issues. Following chapters discuss in detail the role of fire in the ecology of boreal forests, present data sets on fire and the distribution of carbon, and treat the use of satellite imagery in monitoring these regions as well as approaches to modeling the relevant processes.

Book Synopsis Fire Behavior in Black Spruce-lichen Woodland by : Martin E. Alexander
Download or read book Fire Behavior in Black Spruce-lichen Woodland written by Martin E. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of single point-ignition and line-ignition experimental fires was studied in upland black spruce-lichen woodland stands at Porter Lake in the Caribou Range of the Northwest Territories from June 26-July 8, 1982. The experimental burning project objective was to relate the head fire rate of spread (ROS) in this fuel type to the initial spread index (ISI) component of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System. The experimental fire plots varied in size from 0.02 ha-0.65 ha. and the live tree overstory averaged about 1200 stems/ha and 5.0 m in height. The lichen layer averaged about 3.5 cm in depth. Three point-ignition fires, seven line-ignition fires, and one wildfire were documented over a wide range of burning conditions. A relationship for equilibrium fire spread in black spruce-lichen woodland stands was established.
