Anders als für den Sprachwissenschaftler Ferdinand de Saussure, der Sprache vorrangig als Zeichensystem verstand (vgl. Saussure 1931, S. 76 ff.), ist Sprache für den französischen Soziologen Pierre Bourdieu nicht nur ein Kommunikationsmittel, sondern auch ein Instrument sozialen Handelns - ein Mittel der Herrschaft.
