Book Synopsis Italian Film in the Light of Neorealism by : Millicent Marcus
Download or read book Italian Film in the Light of Neorealism written by Millicent Marcus and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movement known as neorealism lasted seven years, generated only twenty-one films, failed at the box office, and fell short of its didactic and aesthetic aspirations. Yet it exerted such a profound influence on Italian cinema that all the best postwar directors had to come to terms with it, whether in seeming imitation (the early Olmi), in commercial exploitation (the middle Comencini) or in ostensible rejection (the recent Tavianis). Despite the reactionary pressures of the marketplace and the highly personalized visions of Fellini, Antonioni. And Visconti, Italian cinema has maintained its moral commitment to use the medium in socially responsible ways--if not to change the world, as the first neorealists hoped, then at least to move filmgoers to face the pressing economic, political, and human problems in their midst. From Rossellini's Open City (1945) to the Taviani brothers' Night of the Shooting Stars (1982). The author does close readings of seventeen films that tell the story of neorealism's evolving influence on Italian postwar cinematic expression. Other films discussed are De Sica's Bicycle Thief and Umberto D. De Santis's Bitter Rice, Comencini's Bread, Love, and Fantasy, Fellini's La strada, Visconti's Senso, Antonioni's Red Desert, Olmi's Il Posto, Germi's Seduced and Abandoned, Pasolini's Teorema, Petri's Investigation of a Citizen above Suspicion, Bertolucci's The Conformist, Rosi's Christ Stopped at Eboli, and Wertmuller's Love and Anarchy, Scola's We All Loved Each Other So Much provides the occasion for the author's own retrospective consideration of how Italian cinema has fulfilled, or disappointed, the promise of neorealism.

Download or read book Light and Dark written by Michele Groppi and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mixture of journalism and scientific illustration, Light and Dark wishes to pay tribute to the Italian Muslim community, its traits, colors, people, and contradictions. The book is a recollection of interviews, stories, numbers, and from the author's journey to 15 Italian cities, asking about “everything” that could describe what it means to be Muslim in today's Italy. Heated in nature, queries ranged from racism to violence in the name of God, from identity crisis to women in Islam, from Islamophobia to attempts to Islamise society. What emerges is an indubitably fascinating and kaleidoscopic picture: a combination of joy and sadness, love and hatred, peace and war, hope and disillusionment. And this is exactly the point: we must honor complexity. We cannot make big generalizations. Yet, we must study, question, the challenge in constructive ways – for only through dialogue will we maximize chances for mutual understanding and cohesiveness.
Book Synopsis Staging Fascism by : Jeffrey Thompson Schnapp
Download or read book Staging Fascism written by Jeffrey Thompson Schnapp and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On an April evening in Florence in 1934, before twenty thousand spectators, the mass spectacle 18BL was presented, involving two thousand amateur actors, an air squadron, one infantry and cavalry brigade, fifty trucks, four field and machine gun batteries, ten field-radio stations, and six photoelectric units. However titantic its scale, 18BL's ambitions were even greater: to institute a revolutionary fascist theater of the future, a modern theatre of and for the masses that would end the crisis of the bourgeois theatre. This is the complete story of the event, a colossal failure to critics and spectators alike, which the fascist government took pains to expunge from the annals of the regime. The detailed reconstruction of these various aspects of 18BL serves as a springboard for a larger inquiry into the place of media, technology, and machinery in the fascist imagination, particularly in its links to fascist models of narrative, historiography, spectacle, and subjectivity.

This richly illustrated book documents the evolution of Italian lamp and lighting design from 1945 to the end of the twentieth century. A collection of essays by design historian Alberto Bassi, organized in seventeen sections, traces the industry’s critical and commercial successes and the unique relationship between tradition, decorative quality, technology, and production. Included are profiles of individual designers such the Castiglioni brothers, Vico Magistretti, Gino Sarfatti and Pietro Chiesa, and manufacturers such as Flos, Fontana Arte, and Luceplan. The book reproduces more than 300 archival and new photographs, original advertisements, product displays, and installations of lights and lighting. This volume is the second in a new series, inaugurated by ABC: Twentieth-Century Graphic Design, aimed not just at a traditional readership of architects but also at people working in the field of graphics and students at the new faculties of design.
Book Synopsis Feeling Italian by : Thomas J. Ferraro
Download or read book Feeling Italian written by Thomas J. Ferraro and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2006 American Book Award, presented by the Before Columbus Foundation Southern Italian emigration to the United States peaked a full century ago—;descendents are now fourth and fifth generation, dispersed from their old industrial neighborhoods, professionalized, and fully integrated into the “melting pot.” Surely the social historians are right: Italian Americans are fading into the twilight of their ethnicity. So, why is the American imagination enthralled by The Sopranos, and other portraits of Italian-ness? Italian American identity, now a mix of history and fantasy, flesh-and-bone people and all-too-familiar caricature, still has something to teach us, including why each of us, as citizens of the U.S. twentieth century and its persisting cultures, are to some extent already Italian. Contending that the media has become the primary vehicle of Italian sensibilities, Ferraro explores a series of books, movies, paintings, and records in ten dramatic vignettes. Featured cultural artifacts run the gamut, from the paintings of Joseph Stella and the music of Frank Sinatra to The Godfather’s enduring popularity and Madonna’s Italian background. In a prose style as vivid as his subjects, Ferraro fashions a sardonic love song to the art and iconography of Italian America.
