Book excerpt: In 2007, the Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA) and one of its administrative zones, the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), in northeast China commissioned the RAND Corporation to perform a technology-foresight study to help them develop and implement a strategic vision and plan for economic growth through technological innovation. The principal objectives were to identify the most-promising emerging technology applications for TBNA and TEDA to pursue as part of their plan for growth, to analyze the drivers and barriers they would face in each case, and to recommend action plans for each technology application (TA). Seven TAs should form a pivotal part of TBNA's comprehensive strategic plan: cheap solar energy; advanced mobile communications and radio-frequency identification; rapid bioassays; membranes, filters, and catalysts for water purification; molecular-scale drug design, development, and delivery; electric and hybrid vehicles; and green manufacturing. The specific action plans can be integrated into an overarching strategic plan that rests on three legs: building a state-of-the-art R & D program; updating and expanding TBNA and TEDA's manufacturing base; and positioning TBNA and TEDA for the global marketplace. The plan offers TBNA a wealth of opportunities that will position it for the future development it envisions, and each TA emerges from one or more of TEDA's current pillar industries, making for a fluid transition that builds on existing strengths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1991, the first edition of Forecasting and Management of Technology was one of the leading handful of books to deal with the topic of forecasting of technology and technology management as this discipline was emerging. The new, revised edition of this book will build on this knowledge in the context of business organizations that now place a greater emphasis on technology to stay on the cutting edge of development. The scope of this edition has broadened to include management of technology content that is relevant to now to executives in organizations while updating and strengthening the technology forecasting and analysis content that the first edition is reputed for. Updated by the original author team, plus new author Scott Cunningham, the book takes into account what the authors see as the innovations to technology management in the last 17 years: the Internet; the greater focus on group decision-making including process management and mechanism design; and desktop software that has transformed the analytical capabilities of technology managers. Included in this book will be 5 case studies from various industries that show how technology management is applied in the real world.

Book excerpt: High-Entropy Alloys: Design, Manufacturing, and Emerging Applications presents cutting-edge advances in the field of these materials, covering their mechanics, methods of manufacturing, and applications, all while emphasizing the link between their structure/microstructure and functional properties. The book starts with a section on the fundamentals of high-entropy alloys (HEAs), with chapters discussing their thermodynamics, subgroups (transition metal; refractory; ceramics; metallic glasses and more), physical metallurgy, and microstructural characterization. The next section features chapters which look at manufacturing processes of HEAs, such as liquid metallurgy synthesis, in-situ synthesis, additive manufacturing, machine learning, friction stir welding, and fabrication of coatings for HEAs. The final section of the book covers applications of these materials, including their use as irradiation-resistant structural materials, catalyst materials, electrode materials, HEAs for solid hydrogen storage, and more. The book is a key resource for academic researchers, grad students, and industry professionals working with HEAs across a range of disciplines and applications including aerospace, functional materials, catalyst materials, gas storage, sensing, super-conducting materials, biomedical, civil engineering, energy storage, and energy materials. - Covers the mechanics, manufacturing, and applications of functionally-oriented high-entropy alloys (HEAs) - Discusses the metallurgical composition of HEAs, their microstructural characterization, thermal stability, and how to manufacture them via powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, and friction stir welding - Reviews applications of HEAs such as for irradiation-resistant structural materials, in biomedical settings, as catalyst materials, for solid hydrogen storage, and more
