Book excerpt: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education (The United States Department of Justice, n.d.). Although Title IX was enacted over 45 years ago, college athletic departments remain non-compliant with the law (U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, 2016; Women's Law Project, 2014), suggesting a need for research regarding barriers to compliance. A central piece in the Title IX enforcement mechanism is engagement on the part of constituencies who are affected by the law. In effect, the accountability mechanism to ensure Title IX compliance rests with those who are educated about its requirements. Within athletic departments, those constituencies include coaches, administrators, staff members, and athletes. This paper provides an overview of the literature that documents knowledge deficiencies among those constituencies (Staurowsky & Weight, 2013; Weight & Staurowsky, 2014; Staurowsky, Zonder, & Reimer, 2017) as well as the lack of Title IX compliance, proportionality gaps, and ongoing litigations among Division II institutions (U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, 2012, 2014, 2015a, 2016; Women's Law Project, 2014, 2017). The purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative, cross-sectional survey research was to examine the levels of knowledge and perceptions among Division II athletic administrators, staff, and coaches regarding Title IX standards at their institution. More specifically, this study sought to gain a more in-depth understanding of overall knowledge and perceptions among Division II participants, as well as, determine if any differences existed between the respondents based on gender, position, and team coached. This study found that, on average, participants' knowledge ranged from 0 to 6 with a mean of 3.04 (SD = 1.64). In addition, this study revealed that the main effect of position was statistically significant; (F(2, 124)=6.99, p.001), while the main effect of gender on knowledge, and the interaction effect between position and gender on knowledge were not statistically significant (p.05). Further, it was discovered that the main effect for coach by team gender was not statistically different between groups (p>.05). Regarding perceptions, participants' perceptions were similar when looking at Overall Perceptions, Opportunities for Participation & Scholarship, Benefits and Services, Awareness and Understanding. This study found the main effect of gender and the interaction effect between position and gender was not statistically significant (p.05) for all categories. Studies in the past have looked at the number of female administrators compared to their male counterparts. These studies do not actually determine if those women in the SWA position are satisfied with their jobs, if they are doing what they initially thought they would be, and if they are doing what the NCAA says a typical SWAs role and duties should be. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics and perceptions of current Senior Woman Administrators in NCAA, Division II institutions. The study looked at the general demographics of SWAs and the overall job satisfaction SWAs had with their position. Methods: 272 NCAA Division II institutions were sent a survey containing questions on demographics, education, prior experience, additional jobs, a scale to assess the SWAs duties compared to those duties set forth by the NCAA SWA handbook, the importance of each duty and responsibility according to the respondent, and an open section for respondents to add their own comments and experiences regarding their SWA position. Results: There were 102 valid responses for a response rate of 37.5%. SWAs have 1.388 additional job duties ranging from assistant/associate athletic directors to head coaches. They valued maintaining relations with athletes (2.69), and advocating for women's sports (2.52), while making recommendations for department salaries (1.05), and allocating of scholarship money (1.40) were their least valued tasks. The mean amount of experience a SWA has was 5.49 years of collegiate head coaching experience and 4.91 of athletic administration. A Master's degree was the most common highest level of education with 78.9% reaching this level. Overall satisfaction with the SWA position was 6.67 on a 10 point scale, with 10 being the most satisfied"--Abstract.

The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) was used to gauge the satisfaction of 109 CoSIDA members at NCAA Division I institutions in the United States. Nine facets of job satisfaction are measured in the JSS, including pay, promotional opportunities, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, supervision, co-workers, nature of work, communication, and work conditions. The data from this preliminary study showed that SIDs are satisfied with their job overall, and most satisfied with supervision, nature of work, and co-workers. SIDs were found to be dissatisfied with both pay and promotion.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A majority of the literature regarding employee-organization relationships has focused on perceived organizational support (POS) (Eisenberger, Huntington, Hutchison, & Sowa, 1986). POS is defined as employees' formation of global beliefs pertaining to how much the organization cares about their well-being and values their contributions. In accordance with Eisenberger et al. (1986) the overarching purpose of the current study was to investigate athletic administrators' POS. More specifically, the primary purposes of this study were to: (a) examine the antecedents of POS; (b) examine the consequences of POS, including, affective commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intention; and (c) assess gender differences in regard to these antecedents and consequences, and (d) develop and test a comprehensive model of POS, applicable to intercollegiate athletic administrators. Two athletic administrators (one female and one male) at each of the 327 NCAA Division I institutions (N = 654) were asked to respond to the Athletic Administrator Questionnaire. A total of 222 athletic administrators completed and returned the questionnaire for a response rate of 34%. Results showed that combined, the antecedents (participation in decision making, supervisor support, growth opportunity, and procedural, distributive, and interactional justice) accounted for 78% of the variance in POS. However, growth opportunity was not a significant predictor of POS. In addition, athletic administrators' POS was positively related to both affective commitment and job satisfaction. Further examination showed that affective commitment and job satisfaction had a significant, negative relationship with turnover intention for athletic administrators. Both collectively explained 35% of the variance in turnover intention. Affective commitment was a better predictor of turnover intention than job satisfaction. Finally, POS did not have a direct relationship with turnover intention for athletic administrators; rather, it was partially mediated by affective commitment and job satisfaction. Female respondents' perceptions of all variables in this study were nearly identical to male athletic administrators and were relatively high considering the lack of female representation at the top levels of intercollegiate athletic administration. In summary, this study suggests that the traditional concepts of social exchange theory and the norm of reciprocity have been shown to hold credence within an intercollegiate athletics context.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative research was to investigate the relationship among self-identified Black male National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors and their lived experiences of career attainment through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT). In addition to document analyses, this study used a phenomenological approach to answer two research questions. The first research question-referred to as "Factors Impacting Career" ("Factors")-asked what are personal, professional, social, and institutional factors that impact the individual career trajectories of Black male athletic directors? The second research question-referred to as "Strategies to Overcome Barriers" ("Strategies")-asked how do Black male athletic directors limit any actual or perceived barriers to their career development? Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were used to collect information from all (N = 12) of the FBS Black male athletic directors regarding their perspectives and perception of their credentials, and lived experiences. The results of the study revealed themes developed from the Gioia methodology. The finding of the study revealed three overarching dimensions that impacted the athletic directors' career trajectory. Allyship and nepotism were the two dimensions associated with "Factors" while networking with other minority leaders was the dimension associated with "Strategies". Pertaining to the "Factors" research question, the allyship dimension was supported by the emergent themes of mentorship and diverse network while the nepotism dimension was supported by the emergent themes of lack of privilege and cultural differences. Pertaining to the "Strategies" research question, the dimension of networking with other minority leaders was supported by the emergent themes of intrinsic motivation, gathering extensive experience, and being intentional about networking. Overall, the three overarching dimensions (i.e., allyship, nepotism, and networking with other minority leaders) and the seven emergent themes (i.e., diverse network, lack of privilege, mentorship, cultural differences, intrinsic motivation, gathering extensive experience, and being intentional about networking) advance the sport management field and CRT research by providing a deeper understanding of the perceptions and perspectives of some of the most powerful men in the sport industry who also happen to be Black. The study results may be used to understand the difference in opportunities in experience for Black athletic directors compared to white athletic directors. Implications reveal insights regarding Black athletic directors' challenges and limited opportunities-which confirm the hegemonic situation in sport leadership-and strategies for overcoming barriers.

The research instrument was the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) with added demographic questions. In addition to the determination of the self-perceived athletic director leadership style, the intention of this study was to determine the possible relationship of demographic and institutional variables including athletic director NCAA Division, age, and gender. Participants were the athletic directors from NCAA Division I, II, and III member higher education institutions. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, and one-way ANOVAs to examine the research question. The results found significant differences among the institutional variable of NCAA Divisions. A one-way ANOVA demonstrated that transformational leadership traits of intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation set Division I ADs apart from ADs within Divisions II and III. The findings of the study may have significance for intercollegiate ADs in offering an increase in the understanding of their own leadership style. Thus, the AD can move between both transformational and transactional leadership traits depending on a specific task. The findings of the study may also provide a benefit for college and university presidents by hiring and increasing retention of ADs through matching leadership style with the needs and mission of the intercollegiate athletic department.
