Book Synopsis Jews and the Sporting Life by : Ezra Mendelsohn
Download or read book Jews and the Sporting Life written by Ezra Mendelsohn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume XXIII of the distinguished annual Studies in Contemporary Jewry explores the role of sports in modern Jewish history. The centrality of sports in modern life--in popular and even in high culture, in economic life, in the media, in international and national politics, and in forging ethnic identities--can hardly be exaggerated, but in the field of Jewish studies this subject has been somewhat neglected, at least until recently. Students of American Jewish history, for example, often emphasize the role of sports in the Americanization of the immigrants, while students of Jewish nationalism pay closer attention to its appeal for the regeneration of the Jewish nation, as well as the creation of a new, healthy, Jewish body. The essays brought together in Jews and the Sporting Life expand the body of knowledge about the place sports occupied, and continue to occupy, in Jewish life. They examine the connection between sports and Jewish nationalism, particularly Zionism, and how organized Jewish sports have been an agent of nation-building. They consider the role of Jews as owners of sports teams, as amateur and professional athletes, and as fans and bettors. Other themes include sports and Jewish literature, and boxing as a sport that enabled Jewish men to prove their masculinity in a world that often stereotyped them as weak and "feminine." This volume concentrates on twentieth century developments in Israel, Europe, and the United States.
Book Synopsis Sport Tourism Development by : Tom Hinch
Download or read book Sport Tourism Development written by Tom Hinch and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition provides an incisive, comprehensive examination of sport tourism, exploring the scope and diversity of the linkages between sport and tourism, and focusing on their manifestations in time and space. In presenting a critical discussion of theoretical and applied issues in sport tourism, the authors synthesize a wide range of literature into insightful perspectives of key dimensions of sport tourism development, using ‘focus points’ in each chapter to illustrate real-world manifestations of the concepts and issues being discussed, with additional support provided by international case studies. Continued growth in the demand for sport tourism experiences has heightened the need for advanced, in-depth and critical insights that are theoretically informed. This incisive book has been written to address that need and to stimulate the curiosity of students, educators and practitioners alike.

Book Synopsis BBC Sport in Black and White by : Richard Haynes
Download or read book BBC Sport in Black and White written by Richard Haynes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first detailed account of the formative decades of BBC televised sport when it launched its flagship programmes Sportsview, Grandstand and Match of the Day. Based on extensive archival research in the BBC’s written archives and interviews with leading producers, editors and commentators of the period, it provides a ‘behind-the-scenes’ narrative history of this major institution of British cultural life. In 2016 the BBC celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its television coverage of England’s World Cup victory. Their coverage produced one of the most oft-played moments in the history of television, Kenneth Wolstenholme’s famous line: ‘Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over ... it is now!’ as Geoff Hurst scored England’s fourth goal, securing England’s 4-2 victory. It was a landmark in English football as well as a watershed in the BBC’s highly professionalised approach to televised sport. How the BBC reached this peak of television expertise, and who was behind their success in developing the techniques of televised sport, is the focus of this book.
