Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sport and Sportsmen: A Book of Recollections I may here mention that, through the kindness of a friend well known to many of the best families in Perthshire, I was the bearer of no fewer than twelve letters of introduction. Armed with these missives, I felt perfectly 81, men as I desired my servant to go and secure two outside seats for Perth, determining to make use of one of my introductory letters at the residence of a gentleman who resided four or five miles distant from that town. He is a man who is kind and con siderate to all living things, who has good judgment, who can do no wrong nor sus peot evil in others, who does not crow over his own success, and who has learned to accept defeat with a smiling countenance, yet does not accept it until the last breath has left his body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sporting Sketches: Being Recollections and Reflections on a Variety of Subjects Connected With Sport Horses and Horsemen, Never Before Published When a man commences to write a book, sporting or otherwise, he ought to have an object in View. I have two objects in View. The first is to please a generous public who have encouraged me along the path I have chosen the second, to endeavour to show, however inadequately, that the sportsman in pursuit of his pleasures gets far more than he bargains for. The racing man may find his pleasures enhanced by the surroundings a bountiful Nature has provided. The angler has many pleasures apart from his sport. The sportsman, out for a quiet week's shooting. Book Synopsis Living Out of Bounds by : Steven J. Overman
Download or read book Living Out of Bounds written by Steven J. Overman and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Publisher: Despite some enormous differences in pay among professional athletes, most aspects of their daily lives remain surprisingly constant across sports and income levels. Living out of Bounds provides answers to persistent questions about what it's really like to be an athlete and discusses the filtered image of the athlete that emerges through books and other media. Overman mines a wide array of sports biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, and diaries to construct a representative picture of the athlete's life from the rise of American sport in the late 19th century to the present day. In doing so, he reveals the person behind the sports celebrity, as he exists on a daily basis. Individual chapters cover such topics as college athletics, the pressure of celebrity, the difficulty of balancing sports and everyday life, sex and sexuality, race in sports the obsession with the body, and the difficulties associated with retiring. In the course of the work, a portrait emerges that transcends the individual lives. The shared experiences of devoted training, of travel and hotels, and of tension within and beyond the clubhouse or gym, force use to appreciate the often-oppressive reality of the sporting life, at the same time that the individual lives provide us with a glimpse of the rewards that make sports so compelling to audiences and athletes across America.

Download or read book Thoughts Upon Sport written by Harry R. Sargent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts Upon Sport: A Work Dealing Shortly With Each Branch of Sport to Which Are Added, a Complete History of the Curraghmore Hunt and Memoirs of Notable Sportsmen Seeing how easy it is to interfere with Hunting, so that the King of Sports might at any time be annihilated, as was the case with the Curraghmore, with which Hunt I was personally identified for over a quarter of a century, and fearing, perhaps, that an epidemic of antipathy to sport, such as we for a time suffered from in Ireland, might break out in England, I was induced to begin this book as far back as the week of Frigate's Grand National. My primary object being to strive to once more establish the popularity of hunting in Ireland, and perpetuating other sports in England, I approached each branch of my subject from a point of view which I am not aware was ever taken by any other author - viz., that of showing how Sport, quite irrespective of amusement, benefits our nation and has brought about our individuality. While doing so I have sandwiched personal expe rience and anecdotes, from which a moral bearing upon the object may at times be deduced. And, as a pattern for young fellows to follow, I have alluded in short memoirs to some of the most notable sportsmen of the century. According to my lights and to the best of my ability I have suggested reformation where I considered it was desirable or absolutely required and in doing so, being a plain writing man, as I am a plain-spoken one, I have had at times to hit hard, therefore my remarks will not be agreeable to some people. That I cannot help, however sorry I may feel. I have written my book as best I could in the. Interests of Sport pure and simple, so I have not paid attention to interests, which, however individual, are to my mind of secondary consideration.
