Book Synopsis The Cholinergic Synapse by : Victor P. Whittaker
Download or read book The Cholinergic Synapse written by Victor P. Whittaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most impressive works of scholarship in the field of experimental pharmacology has been the Heffter-Heubner Handbuch der experimentellen Pharmakologie, internationalized some years ago under the title Handbook 0/ Experimental Pharmacology and kept up to date by a series of numbered Ergiin zungswerke or supplementary volumes which have now replaced in importance the original Handbuch. These volumes constitute a valuable and continuously up dated multi author review series of topics important in modern pharmacology and allied sciences. The Editorial Board of the Handbook invited me 2 years ago to undertake, as subeditor, the preparation of a new volume entitled The Cholinergic Synapse. A previous volume in this series, vol. 15, Cholinesterases and Anticholinesterase Agents, edited by GEORGE KOELLE, was published in 1963 and was far wider in scope than its title suggested: it was, in fact an authoritative summing up of the whole subject of cholinergic function and still has some value today as an account of the state of the art as it was at that time. Since then another excellent review, of a specific cholinergic synapse, has appeared in this series: this was vol. 42, Neuromuscular Junction, edited by ELEANOR ZAIMIS and published in 1976. A third volume, vol. 53, Pharmacology o/Ganglionic Transmission, which appeared in 1980 and was edited by D. A. KHARKEVICH, includes important aspects of autonomic cholinergic function.
Book Synopsis Anesthetic Pharmacology by : Alex S. Evers
Download or read book Anesthetic Pharmacology written by Alex S. Evers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 2902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years our understanding of molecular mechanisms of drug action and interindividual variability in drug response has grown enormously. Anesthetic Pharmacology: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice, 2nd edition, is an outstanding therapeutic resource in anesthesia and critical care: Section 1 introduces the principles of drug action, Section 2 presents the molecular, cellular and integrated physiology of the target organ/functional system and Section 3 reviews the pharmacology and toxicology of anesthetic drugs. The new Section 4, Therapeutics of Clinical Practice, provides integrated and comparative pharmacology and the practical application of drugs in daily clinical practice. Edited by three highly acclaimed academic anesthetic pharmacologists, with contributions from an international team of experts, and illustrated in full colour, this is a sophisticated, user-friendly resource for all practitioners providing care in the perioperative period.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium entitled Calcium, Neuronal Function and Transmitter Re lease, was in the framework of the regional meeting of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, that took place in Jerusalem between August 26-31, 1984. The symposium dealt with the role of calcium ions in regulation of a large number of important processes in modern neurobiology, from molecular and cellular points of view. In this context, we consider heart and most cells as 'honorary neurons'. The meeting was comprised of lectures and quite intense discussions. We hope that the transcription of the discussions which follow the articles will give the reader a feeling of the intense, but pleasant atmosphere that per vaded during this symposium. It is our pleasure to thank Mrs. Miriam Silber, the assistant editor of this book, for her hard work in transcribing the discussions, retyping large portions of the book, and getting the approval of the authors. We express our thanks to Dr. Halina Meiri and Dr. Simona Ginsburg for their editorial assis tance. The unfailing help of Ms. Rachel Klein and Ms. Shoshana Wineberg is greatly appreciated. xxvii SECTION 1 CALCIUM CHANNELS, TRANSPORTERS & CALCIUM REGULATED CHANNELS EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON SINGLE CHANNEL AND WHOLE CELL Ca CURRENTS A. M. BROWN, D. L. KUNZE, H.D. LUX AND D. L. WILSON INTRODUCTION Calcium tall currents have a large, fast component which Is not detectable when the currents are turned on or acti vated from the completely rested state (Brown et aI, 1983).

Download or read book History of the Synapse written by Max R. Bennett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of the Synapse provides a history of those discoveries concerning the identification and function of synapses that provide the foundations for research during this new century with a personal view of the process by which new concepts have developed. Previously published as essays, the chapters in this book provide a history of various aspects of synaptic function, beginning with the evolution over two and a half thousand years and how progress was made in the establishment of a conceptual structure that would allow the synapse to be identified at the beginning of the 20th century. Numerous illustrations explain either the technical approach or the experimental finding.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Neurophysiology by : R.F. Schmidt
Download or read book Fundamentals of Neurophysiology written by R.F. Schmidt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English edition of this book has been prepared from the third Gem1an edition published in December 1974. The first two German editions, published in 1971 and 1972, respectively, were very well received in Germany. We hope that this English version will enjoy a similar popularity by students wishing to understand the essential concepts relevant to the fascinating field of neurophysiology. The evolution of this book has been unique. The first edition was based on a series of lectures presented for many years to first-year physiology students at the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim. These lectures were converted into a series of 38 programmed texts, and after extensive testing, published as a programmed textbook of neurophysiology (N europhysiologie programmiert, Springer-Verlag Heidelberg, 1971). Thereafter the present text was written and thoroughly brought up to date. Throughout this period all of the authors were members of the Department of Physiology in Heidel berg allowing for maximum cooperation at all stages of this endeavor. With regard to the English edition, I wish to express my apprecia tion to Mr. Derek Jordan and Mrs. Inge Jordan for translating this book, and to my colleagues Dr. Mark Rowe and Dr. Dean O. Smith for their valuable comments and suggestions on the English manuscript. I express my grateful thanks to the publishers, both in Heidelberg and New York, for their unfailing courtesy and for their extraordinary efficiency.
