Book Synopsis Honor, Shame, and Guilt by : Daniel Y. Wu
Download or read book Honor, Shame, and Guilt written by Daniel Y. Wu and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-07-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Wu explores how the concepts honor, shame, and guilt function in the book of Ezekiel, as well as in the wider contexts of their general use in anthropological or social-scientific approaches to biblical studies. He frames Ezekiel’s key terms for honor (kabod), shame (bosh ), and guilt ('awah) within an analysis of a broad perspective on these terms in the body of the Old Testament as a way of forming the “concept spheres” within which the specific instances of each term in Ezekiel sit. Wu gleans insight from the dominant contemporary definitions of honor, shame, and guilt in the fields of psychology and anthropology and their application to biblical studies, and he reflects on how this broader context informs and is informed by his analysis of Ezekiel. The study concludes by drawing together the implications and contribution of the analysis of Ezekiel and applying them to the development of social-scientific models for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third book in the River of Peace series. The series consists of: The River of Peace, I Was Hungry . . . and She Fed Me, and now this the latest, Dying and Living Between Shame and Splendor. This is our narrator, John Whitman's, description of Dying and Living Between Shame and Splendor.Hey, I'm John Whitman, and I'm back.My life was a wreck when I first came to Alabama. But things are different now. My friends have worked together to give me a new start. My slate wiped clean. No debt. Enough money in the bank to put me back in the home building business. A new home. A new wife. A new family. A new faith. In fact, everything around me is new. But I'm still me. And that's the problem. What will happen when I have to go out and face real life again?Well . . . that's what this story is about. It's also about Jen. My wife. The woman is God's gift to mankind. She loves me. Me! Go figure. She's by my side-loving me, challenging me, charming me. But let's not forget that she has MS; how are we gonna deal with that? Then there's Jim and Susan Swartzkopt. They're still here. But now they're trying to change the paradigm of all our lives. They tell me they're finally going to take the war to those scumbags from the UAI. How exactly are they gonna do that? Their entire arsenal wouldn't arm a respectable cub scout troop. And what's this talk of trying to save their enemies? From the roof of Mrs. Wilson's house, which collapsed just as Vanna turned the T; to the house of torment in Atlanta, where humanity's shame is on display; to the place of ultimate sacrifice, where life is freely poured out; to the seat of splendor, the wellspring of all human desire-that's where it all happens, our story of dying and living.

Download or read book Saving Shame written by Virginia Burrus and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Burrus explores one of the strongest and most disturbing aspects of the Christian tradition, its excessive preoccupation with shame. While Christianity has frequently been implicated in the conversion of ancient Mediterranean cultures from shame- to guilt-based and, thus, in the emergence of the modern West's emphasis on guilt, Burrus seeks to recuperate the importance of shame for Christian culture. Focusing on late antiquity, she explores a range of fascinating phenomena, from the flamboyant performances of martyrs to the imagined abjection of Christ, from the self-humiliating disciplines of ascetics to the intimate disclosures of Augustine. Burrus argues that Christianity innovated less by replacing shame with guilt than by embracing shame. Indeed, the ancient Christians sacrificed honor but laid claim to their own shame with great energy, at once intensifying and transforming it. Public spectacles of martyrdom became the most visible means through which vulnerability to shame was converted into a defiant witness of identity; this was also where the sacrificial death of the self exemplified by Christ's crucifixion was most explicitly appropriated by his followers. Shame showed a more private face as well, as Burrus demonstrates. The ambivalent lure of fleshly corruptibility was explored in the theological imaginary of incarnational Christology. It was further embodied in the transgressive disciplines of saints who plumbed the depths of humiliation. Eventually, with the advent of literary and monastic confessional practices, the shame of sin's inexhaustibility made itself heard in the revelations of testimonial discourse. In conversation with an eclectic constellation of theorists, Burrus interweaves her historical argument with theological, psychological, and ethical reflections. She proposes, finally, that early Christian texts may have much to teach us about the secrets of shame that lie at the heart of our capacity for humility, courage, and transformative love.

Book Synopsis The Rise of the Shame Society by : Marcel H. Van Herpen
Download or read book The Rise of the Shame Society written by Marcel H. Van Herpen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American society is often characterized as a “guilt culture,” as opposed to non-Western “shame cultures.” But is this distinction still valid today? Through examples like shaming penalties in criminal law, “fat shaming,” and cyberbullying on the social media, The Rise of the Shame Society: America’s Change from a Guilt Culture into a Shame Culture shows how shame is increasingly invading our lives, leading to feelings of humiliation and depression. Marcel Van Herpen identifies three causes of this phenomenon: new childrearing methods, the advent of the social media, and a transformation of Western individualism. He weighs the arguments for and against a shame society and concludes that a guilt-centered approach remains preferable. Although shame increasingly permeates everyday life, the author argues that its rise is not a fatality. He emphasizes that shame is a dynamic phenomenon and that one can observe trends which lead to an increase of shame, as well as to its decrease. Examples of the latter are a growing sensitivity to the pain caused by anti-Black racism, the decrease of anti-LGBTQIA+ prejudices, and efforts to end the stigmatization of people with disabilities. Along with exploring its increase, The Rise of the Shame Society demonstrates that there are ways to overcome shame.
