Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism Not Spiritualism This work was originally written in the early months of the year 1896, but since that date, until November 1905, it has been repeatedly revised and added to, but in no material respect have the experiences been interfered with. The writer (pleads dense ignorance upon spiritual matters at the former date, even after all that he had experienced, and which is herein partially recorded. It will be seen throughout these pages that the author is known by the name of Dr. Scott, and the reason why he assumed this noon dc plume, as well as fictitious names to all the principal characters concerned, may be inferred from the statement in Chapter I. However, for various reasons, it is impossible to maintain this incognito, therefore he feels it incumbent upon himself to disclose his real name and place of abode. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missing Link in Modern Spiritualism IT is not that the history of Spiritual Manifestations in this century and country has not again and again been written, nor that a library of the Splendid literature of Spiritualism - narrative, philosophical, and religious - does not already exist, that I have deemed it a duty to give this history to the world. It happens that nobody else possesses - both in vivid per sonal recollections and in stores of documentary material the means and the data necessary for the task of giving a correct account of the initiation of the movement known as Modern Spiritualism; and the now hastening lapse of years gives warning that if to place it on record is a duty - as many friends have often urged - it is a duty not to be much longer delayed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About Spiritualism Years ago, when I was investigating the phenomena of Spiritualism by attending public classes, seances and meetings, a visitor asked me, "How does the medium do it?" My answer was, "She does it by power from spirits who were once on earth, like ourselves." Spirit power comes through mediums, from spirits, as a gift from Infinite Intelligence. And this is the truth about all phases of mediumship and of spiritual phenomena. Therefore, let it be clearly understood, that every spiritual medium, would be in line with any ordinary mortal without the quality of mediumship, were it not for the fact that a medium is a channel or instrument for spirit power, from spirits. So all credit for psychical phenomena must be given to our spirit friends, and not to the medium. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Spiritualism: Its Phenomena and Philosophy The angels of the Bible are ministering spirits, who, from their very nature and constitution, are best adapted to the work of guardianship and ministration, and the work is best adapted to their growth and development. Such guardianship is una Vailing unless the spirits can communicate with those they pro tect. T liat they can do so, he proves by the Bible, the ancients, and the fathers and leaders of the Church. Having thus fortified himself with authority, he brings forward the heavy artillery of modern phenomena, held in reserve. He would not indorse the manifestations given at public Circles, regard ing the rappings as a humbug, until forced on his attention by rappings and spirit writing in his own family. He felt the presence of spirits and conversed with them, yet he remained ln doubt of the reality of Spiritualism. His educational preju dices stood in his way, and an article he published at that time gives a doubtful sound. He believes ln sp1r1t communion, but discards the manifestations. In 1853 he continued his investigation of Spiritualism. Be lieving it to be the prince of humbugs, he endeavored to detect and expose it. Through the mediumship of a colored servant-girl in his family, he was first convinced that the phe nomena could not be explained by any law of physics or meta physics with which he was acquainted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classic of Spiritism This book is addressed to all persons interested in the history of the development of spiritualism, particularly to the professed believers in the Bible who have shut their eyes and ears to its deeper teachings, and opposed with asperity those who dare use their higher senses. It does not seem illogical for that great institutional Church which keeps so much lore locked in its temples, and which feeds the multitude on legends, reserving the Holy Book for the favoured few, to keep the crowd in the outer courts, or if in the temple, to pull the curtains of the sanctuary Close about the mystery. Though it seems strange that this powerful organization which has preserved the wisdom of the past to such a degree, and has had in its ranks hosts of saints and martyrs who have borne witness to the truth that communication with the spirit world is possible and right should oppose the great psychic wave now spreading over all this earth. The people are beginning to answer, Give us your proofs and we. Will believe you. We want something move beyond mere conjecture. The subject is of too much importance to us. If you cannot tell us we will find it out (for our selves. Observe the inaccuracy of the teaching on this subject! The Protestant Church denied for a long time that there could be such a thing as the return of those whom we call dead, and when it was forced by the testimony of men of learning and science to acknowledge it to be a fact, it asenibed the forces by which it was operated as diabolical! Perhaps. The Protestant Church may remember there was a time when all the powers of Nature, such as thunder and lightning and earthquakes, were attributed 130 the Devil-anyt, hing, in short, which people understood as little as they do Spiritu'alism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Supernatural Entertainments, Simone Natale vividly depicts spiritualism’s rise as a religious and cultural phenomenon and explores its strong connection to the growth of the media entertainment industry in the nineteenth century. He frames the spiritualist movement as part of a new commodity culture that changed how public entertainments were produced and consumed. Starting with the story of the Fox sisters, considered the first spiritualist mediums in history, Natale follows the trajectory of spiritualism in Great Britain and the United States from its foundation in 1848 to the beginning of the twentieth century. He demonstrates that spiritualist mediums and leaders adopted many of the promotional strategies and spectacular techniques that were being developed for the broader entertainment industry. Spiritualist mediums were indistinguishable from other professional performers, as they had managers and agents, advertised in the press, and used spectacularism to draw audiences. Addressing the overlap between spiritualism’s explosion and nineteenth-century show business, Natale provides an archaeology of how the supernatural became a powerful force in the media and popular culture of today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Tendency of Modern Spiritualism This work lays no claim to literary merit, or to philosophic or scientific research. Our course has not been in that di rection. Our aim has not been to gratify a taste for such reading, but rather to make our pages useful. Nor have we aimed to please any particular class, but rather to fulfill the requirement to speak the truth in faithfulness, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear. We have written especially for the benefit of those who fear God, and tremble at his word. While we believe that in these pages is contained the only true solution of these mysterious phenomena, we would re mind the readers that eu intellectual conviction, or mere be lief of the truth, will not shield them from the power of these deceptions. Nothing short of humble obedience to the truth, walking in the Spirit of God, will shield from the spirit of error. If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Though he may be convinced of the truth, yet if the spirit of error reigns in his heart, the coming conflict will surely find him arrayed against the Lamb and his army. That you, dear reader, may be sanctified through the truth, and hid in the sure refuge in the time of trouble, is the prayer of the writer. J. H. W. Book excerpt: Secular humanists and other “progressives” have been predicting the demise of religion for the past 250 years. But they keep running into a problem: those who were supposed to be liberated by the secular gospel that God is Dead aren’t buying it. Except for some parts of western Europe and in countries culturally destroyed by Communism, secularization in the radical sense has not occurred. While it has not obliterated the religious impulse, however, the drive towards “progressive irreligion” has, Robert Royal believes, encouraged ignorance of religion’s central role in the development of the West. In The God That Did Not Fail, Royal offers an original reading of religion in ancient Greece and Rome, of Christianity and Judaism, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Reformation, the several modern Enlightenments, culminating with a profound assessment of our current postmodern moment. He concludes that since religion is a permanent part of human nature and of the particular character of the West, our efforts should be directed not into a quixotic effort to deny the undeniable, especially as we face challenges from Islamic fundamentalism, but into promoting a well thought out and dynamic interplay of faith, reason, and modern freedoms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Spiritualism In this, his posthumous work, Myers does not indeed disdain whatever support may be derived from the trance utterances and the physical phenomena. But in both directions the evidence has been SO multi plied since his death that it will be necessary to devote the bulk of this book to its discussion. Myers' peculiar contribution to the subject may be considered more brie y, not, indeed, as being less important, but because the nine years which have elapsed have brought nothing to strengthen his position. Brie y, Myers essayed to lift the whole problem of man's immortality to a higher level, and propounded an argument of far wider scope, whose cogency we are hardly yet in a position accurately to estimate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Spiritualism: Or, the Opening Way Should some of the inquiry seem like probing into the ways of God, or too much like that feeling after the print of the nails, which alone could persuade the doubting disciple, the writer can only say that it is in accord with the need of his own mind, as well as with the development of the day, that man should in all things find a reason for his faith, if he can; the limit of such inquiry, though not always of his attainment, being only in his capacity to shape his questioning. Not in conceit or presumption let the asking mind raise its thought to the highest, but in that sure trust which should ever bring the sincere child to the good Father, with uplifted head and out stretched arms, for the blessings of His great love, the inspiration of His ever waiting spirit of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Defence of Modern Spiritualism It was difficult for me to give in to the idea that solid Oh jects could be conveyed, invisibly, through closed doors, or that heavy furniture could be moved without the interposi tion of hands. Philosophers will say these things are abso lutely impossible; nevertheless, it is absolutely certain that they do occur. I have met in the houses Of private friends, as witnesses of these phenomena, persons whose testimony would go for a good deal in a court of justice. They have in cluded peers, members Of parliament, diplomatists of the high est ra'hk, judges, barristers, physicians, clergymen, members of learned societies, chemists, engineers, journalists, and thinkers of all sorts and degrees. They have suggested and carried into effect tests of the most rigid and satisfactory char acter. The media (all non-professional) have been searched before and after séances. The precaution has even been taken of providing them unexpectedly with other apparel. They have been tied; they have been sealed; they have been secured in, every cunning and dexterous manner that ingenu ity could devise, but no deception has been discovered and no imposture brought to light. Neither was there any motive for imposture. N 0 fee or reward of any kind depended upon the success or non-success of the manifestations.
