Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vampires learn from Serella Stone, a witch from the 13th century, that energy in any form can only be restructured, but never destroyed. That becomes the basis for how it ́s possible that Audra Trivette and Gaetano Minotti are still very much in existence and out for revenge. Audra seeks to destroy Christian by taking his one love through a debilitating disease, while Gaetano seeks his revenge on Jesse Nestarius, the angel who fought him for Serella centuries ago. Only Serella seems to have the key to unite both sides in the ultimate battle between good and evil, but this time the battle grounds are on both sides of the line between heaven and earth. Spiritual Vengeance is Rosemarie ́s finest triumph in depicting how closely related both sides of existence can actually be, and what it might take to effect the desired results in both.

Book excerpt: Jesus died with a psalm on his lips. For millennia, humans have been shaped by the Psalms. And before the Nazis banned him from publishing, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer published this book on the Psalms. What comfort is found in the Psalter? What praise, and what challenge? What threat? In the pages of Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible, discover the richness this book of Scripture held for Bonhoeffer, and learn to pray psalms along with Christ. First published in 1940, this classic reveals how the Psalms are essential to the life of the believer and offers Bonhoeffer's reflections on psalms of thanksgiving, suffering, guilt, praise, and lament. Now with an introduction by Walter Brueggemann and excerpts from the Psalms, Bonhoeffer's timeless work offers contemporary readers ancient wisdom and resources for the living of these days. Includes a biographical sketch of Bonhoeffer written by his friend and biographer Eberhard Bethge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May, 1921, Joseph Rini and five other men of Italian descent drove from New Orleans to Independence, Louisiana, in a stolen car to attempt the late-night robbery of an Independence bank. During the confused events of that night, a local businessman was shot by an unknown assailant, and the six men were shortly thereafter captured and charged with murder, largely on the basis of circumstantial evidence. They were found guilty. When this verdict was appealed and the state supreme court reversed it on a technicality, a second trial in May, 1922, ended with an identical decision and sentence. A series of fruitless appeals followed, and on May 9, 1924, the prisoners were hanged in Amite City—the nation’s only execution of six men for the murder of one. Using court transcripts, newspaper accounts, and interviews, John Baiamonte recounts the dramatic and often moving story of these six men and their trial, which in its day was to become a national and international cause célèbre. He explores the social prejudices of the day, particularly the popular assumption that any criminal activity involving Italians was part of a plot by the Mafia. Fear of Italian gangsters, especially from a tightly organized Mafia, had been rampant in southern Louisiana since the 1890s, as was prejudice against the hardworking law-abiding Sicilian immigrants who had settled in large numbers in Tangipahoa Parish, where these events took place. “Bloody Tangipahoa” had long been notorious for violence, particularly against minorities. Moreover, the parish judicial system at that time, the trial judge, and the state Board of Pardons, which reviewed the Italians’ appeal, were thought to be involved with the Ku Klux Klan. Even the governor, John M. Parker, was one of the leaders of a mob that murdered eleven Italians suspected of Mafia affiliation in New Orleans in 1891. Baiamonte also examines the mood of the courtroom, the pressures put upon the lawyers, the jury, and the witnesses to convict the six—despite the fact that the prosecution’s only witness to the shooting failed to identify any of the defendants and no witness could place the defendants closer than three miles from Independence on the night of the murder. Everyone became a participant in the courtroom, even the spectators. They applauded when new evidence against the defendants was introduced. In cameos of each of the convicted men, Baiamonte describes moods and actions. Joseph Bocchio, one of the condemned, read Shakespeare and wrote poems, which were published in the local paper. Spirit of Vengeance affords an intriguing view of a tumultuous period in Louisiana history, and the six men whose vain struggle to survive brought them international attention.

Joe's mother died leaving no extra cash, only a home with a mortgage and an older vehicle to maintain. Cheryl secretly trained to enter the Olympic games to win a gold medal and impress her dad, who was the CEO of the Olympic committee. The night she planned to tell her dad about her exciting news, she was purposely run over by an automobile and left to die. After two long years recuperating, Cheryl ventured outside her home, only to have an automobile""driven by the same man who previously tried to kill her""chase her wheelchair down a steep hill that led to a park where Joe was running for exercise. She was angry at God for allowing her injuries to take away her chance to run for a gold medal in the Olympic games and meet the man of her dreams. She asked God to forgive her for being angry at him as she felt her body slipping out of her wheelchair, as Joe gave chase to catch her runaway wheelchair and bring it to a stop. Cheryl looked into his eyes and saw love looking back at her, and a fascinating twists-and-turns journey begins with acts of misplaced vengeance and an incredibly captivating love story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So, this is my first venture into science fiction, at least for writing it. I've been a huge sci-fi fan all my life: I've seen every Star Trek episode ever made, many of my all-time favorite movies are sci-fi Alien, Predator, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, et. al.. However, I never thought I'd write write it. I've always written fantasy, and fantasy is all I've ever written until now. I have finally entered the arena of sci-fi as a writer, although there are those who think this is more fantasy in space than true sci-fi. Not that that's a terrible thing... So, in any event, Garm ap Avanon is the third and final (?) mortal incarnation of the Spirit of Vengeance. His first was in ancient Rome. In the second, he was a rogue adventurer who lived in the 19th century and traveled all over Asia, Africa and Europe. And now, in his 29th century incarnation he is a rogue adventurer yet again, a world-class martial artists with few if any equals. But, impressive as that obviously is, it's going to take a lot more than that. For he must face not only the unforgiving realities of Vulturnus a savage, primal world that could be a near duplicate of Earth in the Mesozoic Era, dinosaurs and all on the one hand but also, on the other, the forces of a powerful, merciless monarch hell-bent on carving out in the cosmos an empire like that his ancestors, the Conquistadors, carved out on Earth centuries before.

True life for the follower of Jesus really is a moment-by-moment trust that God is dependable and fulfills his promises. This is living by faith in future grace, which provides God's mercy, provision, and wisdom—everything we need—to accomplish his good plans for us. In Future Grace, chapter by chapter—one for each day of the month—Piper reveals how cherishing the promises of God helps break the power of persistent sin issues like anxiety, despondency, greed, lust, bitterness, impatience, pride, misplaced shame, and more. Ultimate joy, peace, and hope in life and death are found in a confident, continual awareness of the reality of future grace.

Brady is a high school senior, the champion of the outcast and bullied, who becomes the unwitting recipient of a gift that is both beautiful and terrifying. He discovers he can talk to angels and draw down a magnificent and mysterious light from the Blessed Virgin. However, Brady soon realizes that such power comes at a price: If you call the light, you will inevitably battle the darkness. Indeed, a malevolent darkness is racing toward a small town outside of Dayton, Ohio - transported in a rusted, white conversion van. Its driver brings a palpable evil, unique in its seemingly aimless cruelty. Arrogant and vicious, Ray has no idea of the role he plays in his Master’s plan. This evil has the purpose of snuffing out a holy foe before it grows stronger. 1970s Beavercreek, Ohio is a small, Air Force base town. With lots of folks continually moving in and out, the community is slow to take notice when teenage girls start disappearing. However, as darkness descends and violence intensifies around him, Brady realizes that he is in a life-and-death struggle - not against school bullies, nor merely flesh and blood - but against a strange man with a leering smile who carries Satan in his soul. In an epic battle of good versus evil, Brady will fulfill a prophecy that is hidden in the vaults of the Vatican...but only if he follows the laws of the Prayer of Vengeance.

And then eerily, two descendants from the Wilson family tree are murdered, suggesting that Ophelia has the power to meddle in modern-day events to satisfy her rage. Relying on all of her own psychic powers, Cass has to confront the spirit’s hunger for vengeance and track down a merciless killer before she becomes the next victim of both . . . This book was released on 2008-01-14 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is driven by vengeance in Terry Aladjem's provocative account – a reactive, public anger that is a threat to democratic justice itself. From the return of the death penalty to the wars on terror and in Iraq, Americans demand retribution and moral certainty; they assert the 'rights of victims' and make pronouncements against 'evil'. Yet for Aladjem this dangerously authoritarian turn has its origins in the tradition of liberal justice itself – in theories of punishment that justify inflicting pain and in the punitive practices that result. Exploring vengeance as the defining problem of our time, Aladjem returns to the theories of Locke, Hegel and Mill. He engages the ancient Greeks, Nietzsche, Paine and Foucault to challenge liberal assumptions about punishment. He interrogates American law, capital punishment and images of justice in the media. He envisions a democratic justice that is better able to contain its vengeance.
