Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Conferences The edition of 1862 was reprinted, it would be better not to publish the translation of the second part of his French preface, which dealt with the teaching of the Conferences in a spiritual point of view. This plan has been adopted. The first part of Dom Mackey's preface, translated from the French, with some few omissions, here precedes the interesting preface which Cardinal Wiseman contributed to the print of 1862. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Conferences During the Advents, Lents, and Months of Mary, I have been accustomed to preach in the Church of the Oratory on points connected with the spiritual life. These Addresses have been very familiar, and also, from long personal intercourse with my hearers, more intimate and affectionate than such Addresses would have been under different circumstances. I enjoyed the highest liberty which a preacher can have, -a tolerable certainty that I should not be misunderstood, at least by those who habitually heard me; and of strangers and chance auditors I naturally took no account. As these Addresses had neither the formality of Lectures, nor the dignity of Sermons, I have been accustomed to call them Conferences, using the word rather in a foreign than a native sense. A selection from these is now presented to the reader as nearly in the form in which they were preached as I could remember. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solid Virtue: A Triduum and Spiritual Conferences Whoever seeks to acquire solid virtue must cultivate purity of heart, cleansing himself gradually from every stain, even of the smallest sin. This the Triduum of Fr. Bellecius, if well performed, actually makes, us do; for it first removes the obstacles to Solid Virtue, then points out the means, and finally gives the incentives to its acquirement. This retreat is an abridgment of Fr. Bellecius's larger work on Solid Virtue - an abridgment made by himself. His three spiritual conferences practically show in what Solid Virtue consists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Spiritual Conferences of St. Francis of Sales: Bishop and Prince of Geneva, Institutor and Founder of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary The usual object of a preface is to claim the reader's interest for a work, or his indulgence for its defects, or his better understanding of it, through explanations of its plan and objects. But a preface to a book by St. Francis de Sales must appear superfluous to every catholic reader, on any of these grounds. The author's name, a name so revered, so beloved by every devout soul, at once excites interest, excludes all apolo gies, and dispenses with explanations. Having been requested, by the pious community of his daughters in England, to prefix to the new trans lation of his Conferences, a few preliminary pages, we find it no easy task to comply with their flattering request. Only the hope of bring ing these excellent discourses to the knowledge of more lovers of true devotion, than their modest title would guide to their perusal, can form an excuse to ourselves, or to our readers. At first sight it may appear unreasonable to say that conferences, or spiritual lectures, dcliv ered within the walls of a single convent, having its own special character, not written by their author, but from memory, by his devout hearers, can promise much usefulness beyond the order to which that house belonged, or at most, be yond the sphere of religious life. Now so far from this being, in our judgment, the case, we consider them practically calculated to do much good beyond the cloister and the chapter-hon so of monastery or convent. They will be read, we trust with pleasure, and we are sure with profit, by devout persons living in the world, by clergy and laity; the former of whom will find in them invaluable principles and advice for the guidance of consciences, while the latter cannot fail to derive from their study, consolation, encouragement, and direction. Book excerpt: SPIRITUAL CONFERENCES of Johann Tauler, O.P. is one of the great classics of the Catholic Church. And like the writings of so many other profound and saintly minds, Tauler s works are both easy to read and rich with meaning. They do not dwell on subjects pertinent to only the few, but come to grips with the essential problems we all face in our struggle with the world, the flesh and the devil. If we would attain perfection ( Our Lord enjoined us, Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect. Mt.5:48 ), we must do battle with ourselves and with the subtle, little complacencies and pitfalls we are often content to live with. To this end, Johann Tauler is unparalleled in his ability to bare for our scrutiny all the devious tricks of the human heart in its effort to avoid chastising itself and really settling down to the work of spiritual perfection. Tauler influenced Ven. Louis of Granada, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and many other saints with these seemingly humble sermons. Though brief and easily understood, they will exert a like influence on the Catholic saints of today. Excellent introduction. Impr.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Practically Applied: The Discussions of the International Christian Conference Held in Chicago, October 8-14, 1893 The addresses of the Section Conferences were of a less formal character than those of the General Conference. This was especially true of the conference on Theological Education, the discussions of which were in large measure impromptu. It should be added that on account of the imperfect report of this and of several other conferences some portion of the matter had to be cut out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epoch in the Spiritual Life This volume contains the substance Of the first three addresses delivered before Troy Conference at Saratoga Springs, New York, in April, 1907. They have been expanded very much in order to treat the different sides of the subject which must be pre sented if it is discussed at all. These talks by special request were for exposition rather than exhortation; their aim was to give light rather than heat; to describe the higher Christian life in clear terms, if possible, and to help those who are hesitating, un certain, and confused about it. The purpose has been to set forth distinctly a definite experience or stage in the religious life; to move toward common ground on which many advocates of this life may agree; and also to present a method of research whereby more truth may be ascertained. A knowl edge Of this subject gained from many sermons and from works by different writers is assumed in the reader - as it existed in the hearers - and also of the Scripture passages usually quoted in support of cer tain positions. Accordingly, much that is common to treatises on this doctrine could be omitted, and a full and complete treatment of the Christian life has not been attempted. Everyone of these people got some thorough training for Christian and social work. Of this number perhaps one thousand or more decided to dedicate their entire lives to Christian work. What a dividend is this! One thousand capable lives turned over to the Kingdom! Workers trained for every college for men and every college for women in the South, secretaries trained for every Y. M. C. A. And volunteers trained for every Y. W. C. A. Building in the South, a social impact given to religion and a religious impact given to social work.
