Book excerpt: "A magnificent journey alongside orcas, bringing these beautiful creatures to life." --Jay Ritchlin, David Suzuki Foundation Spirits of the Coast brings together the work of marine biologists, Indigenous knowledge keepers, poets, artists, and storytellers, united by their enchantment with the orca. Long feared in settler cultures as "killer whales," and respected and honored by Indigenous cultures as friends, family, or benefactors, orcas are complex social beings with culture and language of their own. With contributors ranging from Briony Penn to David Suzuki, Gary Geddes and Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, this collection brings together diverse voices, young and old, to explore the magic, myths, and ecology of orcas. A richly illustrated literary and visual journey through past and possibility, Spirits of the Coast illustrates how these enigmatic animals have shaped us as much as our actions have impacted them, and provokes the reader to imagine the shape of our shared future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, you'll find plenty of evidence that the supernatural is alive in the Golden Isles. Crumbling slave cabins, plantation homes and grand mansions, ancient forts, even a hospital that once cared for the five hundred slaves of Retreat Plantation -- all have their own aura, created by those long since dead. A silent Indian couple wanders, looking with pleading eyes to anyone who can help find something precious lost long ago. The ghost of a lonely woman still haunts the theater where she killed herself. Two men grapple with swords in a graveyard, replaying a scene from their lives again and again. -- A woman visiting an old inn experiences deja vu when she is transported to an elegant party that took place there a century before. The ghost of a young polo player killed in a bizarre horseback riding accident strides silently through the place that was his last destination on earth. These stories of restless souls, heartbroken lovers, skin-walkers, and protective spirits will give you a case of the creeps. Keep the lights on!

Book excerpt: Ghosts have been the entertaining subject of many works of fiction, but they're even more intriguing (and perhaps even scarier) when they are the focus of real-life hauntings in our own backyard. An employee of the St. James Hotel in New Mexico watches in shock as a fair-haired toddler with a terribly disfigured face disappears into the floor. This is just one of the paranormal mysteries Leslie Rule shares with us--a result of extensive interviews and research uncovering the reasons behind ghost sightings across the country. Coast to Coast Ghosts features dozens of spine-tingling, real-life ghost stories and approximately fifty black-and-white photographs taken by Rule, including some believed to have captured actual apparitions. Only the reader can decide. . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the removal of the gray whale from the Endangered Species list in 1994, the Makah tribe of northwest Washington State announced that they would revive their whale hunts; their relatives, the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation of British Columbia, shortly followed suit. Neither tribe had exercised their right to whale - in the case of the Makah, a right affirmed in their 1855 treaty with the federal government - since the gray whale had been hunted nearly to extinction by commercial whalers in the 1920s. The Makah whale hunt of 1999 was an event of international significance, connected to the worldwide struggle for aboriginal sovereignty and to the broader discourses of environmental sustainability, treaty rights, human rights, and animal rights. It was met with enthusiastic support and vehement opposition. As a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation, Charlotte Cote offers a valuable perspective on the issues surrounding indigenous whaling, past and present. Whaling served important social, economic, and ritual functions that have been at the core of Makah and Nuu-chahnulth societies throughout their histories. Even as Native societies faced disease epidemics and federal policies that undermined their cultures, they remained connected to their traditions. The revival of whaling has implications for the physical, mental, and spiritual health of these Native communities today, Cote asserts. Whaling, she says, “defines who we are as a people.” Her analysis includes major Native studies and contemporary Native rights issues, and addresses environmentalism, animal rights activism, anti-treaty conservatism, and the public’s expectations about what it means to be “Indian.” These thoughtful critiques are intertwined with the author’s personal reflections, family stories, and information from indigenous, anthropological, and historical sources to provide a bridge between cultures. Shamanism is an ancient spiritual path that exists all around the world; and a shaman uses his or her close affinity with nature and spirits to help those in need of healing. In The Spirits are Always with Me, Jane Shutt explains what shamanism really is, and how it is especially relevant to us in the modern world as we seek to connect with our roots and with our own sense of inner purpose. She shares her own incredible story and the stories of many of those who have come to her for help and healing. Jane reveals the ways in which shamanism can dramatically help people to turn their lives around. She recalls her own shamanic journeys to other levels of reality, including adventures in the Otherworld, spine-tingling visits to the Land of the Dead and other reaches of existence. She shows how shamanism can offer inroads into anything from curing a physical ailment, to dealing with mischievous household sprites, through to healing a whole city.

Book excerpt: Zanzibar, an island off the East African coast, with its Muslim and Swahili population, offers rich material for this study of identity, religion, and multiculturalism. This book focuses on the phenomenon of spirit possession in Zanzibar Town and the relationships created between humans and spirits; it provides a way to apprehend how society is constituted and conceived and, thus, discusses Zanzibari understandings of what it means to be human.
