Book excerpt: That the Holy Spirit is present in preaching is something we take for granted. How the Spirit is present is a question we seldom ask. Luke Powery suggests that we fail to ask that question to the detriment of our preaching. Drawing on the tradition of African American preaching, he locates the Spirit’s activity in the sermon in two primary places; First, in celebration, the joyous acceptance of God’s gifts to the church and to the world. But equally as powerful is the expression of lament, the lifting up of our sorrow, grief, and suffering. In these two experiences the Spirit plays the decisive role, enabling the preacher to lay the congregation’s joys and sorrows at the feet of the living God, and announcing God’s presence in both our celebration and our lament.

Book excerpt: In the past few decades there have been an increasing number of authors and movements that reject the classic Protestant understanding of justification (e.g., the New Perspective on Paul, Auburn Avenue Theology, the Renewal Movement, etc.). While the various proposals differ in many respects, they are generally united in their rejection of justification as a legal declaration made by the Father about the believer based on the work of the Son. In particular, among renewal (Pentecostal/Charismatic) authors, there have been several attempts to redefine justification, insisting that it is an umbrella term incorporating numerous redemptive ideas rather than a declaration of the believer’s righteousness. These attempts are in part rooted in the absence of any overt pneumatology in the doctrine’s typical formulation. One need only read the above sentences to see that there is no mention of the Holy Spirit. This book addresses these and other concerns, especially by renewal authors, and demonstrate that the doctrine is, in fact, pneumatologically informed, albeit latently rather than blatantly. As a result, there is no need to redefine the theology of the Reformers and their successors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete guide to spirit-filled speech and speaking with spirit This book is a spiritual guide to using the holy gift of speech. It is a ... how-to ... grounded in a humble way of being, expressing an attitude of gratitude toward the tongue, in the knowledge that speech is a gift from God and we have a choice to use our mouths virtuously, in the most humble and searching sense of that word. —from the Introduction So much of our time is spent in conversation, yet little time is devoted to thinking about the words we choose to use, or the manner in which we speak. Taking the time to make our words count—to make our speech sacred—can lead to positive changes in our lives, and improve our relationships with others. Sacred Speech is a personal, warm-hearted approach to a complex matter—how we can use speech in holy ways. Drawing support from literary and spiritual sources, Rev. Donna Schaper offers compelling advice from her own experience as a clergyperson, teacher, partner, and parent, empowering us to: Acknowledge the Divine in the words we use Use speech to maximize the possibility of love and care Use speech to minimize fear Link, connect, and contact with others through words A clear invitation to improve our communications with others, Sacred Speech is ideal for spiritual and religious leaders, professionals who work in multifaith settings, the politically correct and the not-so politically correct, and anyone who wants to do more than simply "watch what they say."

Langman’s contribution, developed over decades of research, performance and teaching, is filled with relevance for today’s speech artists. The powerful spiritual inspirations that stand behind the spoken word are infused throughout, giving this book its wings.’ – Dr Diane Caracciolo, Associate Professor of Educational Theatre, Adelphi University ‘Langman’s seminal work leads the artist through a portal to an experience of the heart and the genius of speech as “the activity of divine creative beings”.’ – Dr Jane Gilmer, Assistant Professor of Drama, VPA, National Institute of Education, Singapore ‘A prodigious work, intriguing, enlightening and passionate – and the co-ordination with Chekhov invaluable… Those fortunate enough to see Dawn’s solo performances of King Lear and Kaspar Hauser know that this book is the fruit of living and loving experience.’ – Sophia Walsh, pioneer teacher and artist of Speech Formation in the English language, Dornach, Switzerland The Art of Speech presents a dynamic path of practice leading to an experience of the Word as a living, healing and creative power. Helping to deliver Western intellectual speech from what Artaud described as ‘shrivelled throats’ and ‘monstrous talking abstractions’, Langman brings to life the spiritual realities out of which a true Art of Speech arises. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner and pioneered initially in the German language by Marie Steiner, this artform is illuminated here through the genius of the English language. Langman builds a bridge between mainstream research into the intrinsic nature of Speech, and the levels of spiritual cognition that led to Rudolf Steiner’s insights. Speech and language can no longer be reduced to an arbitrary collection of abstract symbols, she asserts. This book will inspire those working with these disciplines as practitioners (both artistic and therapeutic) as well as those who wish to understand their significance in human evolution, both past and future. Following her first book The Art of Acting, this volume completes a foundation of understanding for an exploration – in the conclusion of Langman’s trilogy – of an integrated art of speech and acting. Grounded in the spiritual reality of the human being, Langman presents a systematic methodology with which to explore Rudolf Steiner’s Speech and Drama Course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘An abundance of books [by Beckh] came into existence whose significance perhaps will only be properly appreciated in the future.’ – Emil Bock (1959) Hermann Beckh’s lectures on language – published here in English for the first time – offer a unique and penetrating discussion of the origins and evolution of speech. Based on his professional knowledge of Tibetan, Sanskrit and Pali – and complete fluency in at least six other ancient languages, not to count nine modern languages – and accompanied by a heartfelt understanding of anthroposophy, the lectures comprise an unparalleled marriage of academic and meditative insights. Further, they give a valuable introduction to the author’s later works on music, the stars and the Gospels of Mark and John. The Source of Speech features Beckh’s complete series of articles on the subject that were developed during the early, ‘seeding’ period of his life and work. These include: ‘Rudolf Steiner and the East’, an unprecedented study of Steiner’s relationship to Sanskrit and Buddhist spirituality; ‘Let There be Light’, Beckh’s exploration of the six Hebrew words forming Genesis 1:3; articles devoted to the origins of language, Indian philosophies and the names of the Divine in sacred texts; and essays published in Das Goetheanum which examine speech sounds, especially those of Sanskrit and Classical Hebrew. Also included are contemporaneous reviews of Beckh’s articles by Albert Steffen and Eugen Kolisko and a lecture on academia, materialism and the undisciplined enthusiasm for Indian spirituality, held at the University of Berlin. Nearly one hundred years on, Beckh’s perspectives and themes remain as exciting, relevant and fresh as ever.

Book excerpt: Pursuing an Expansive Life of Prayer In wondrous contrast to silent idols, the one true God speaks. He addresses his people in love, and it's their great privilege to answer him in prayer. At its root, prayer isn't mere self-expression or a prod to get a silent God to speak, but it is a learned skill to answer God's initiating word in Christ. Through this thoughtful book, author and pastor Daniel J. Brendsel explains how responding to God can nurture prayerful engagement with Scripture, shape healthy rhythms among God's praying people, and spur excitement for communion with God. For those disappointed by their current life of prayer, Answering Speech invites readers to enter into an expansive and exuberant life of response to the Father through the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit. Offers a Unique Perspective: Explores how Christians are not initiators of prayer but responders to what God has already done Appeals to Pastors and Thoughtful Laypersons: Focuses on important issues that should be taught within the local church Theological yet Accessible: Deeply rooted in theology, this book offers encouragement and practical rhythms for prayer

Book excerpt: Speaking with Spirit: A Guide for Christian Speakers was deemed “the most thorough treatment on the subject of public speaking I have ever seen” by Linus Wright, Former Under Secretary in the U.S. Department of Education. Vassallo published a former edition of this book in 1990, which was declared a “must for an excellent collection of books of this genre” by the American Library Association. Endorsements “This extraordinary piece of work is the most thorough treatment on the subject of public speaking I have ever seen. Speaking with Spirit is full of factual information organized in easily recognizable categories. I was particularly gratified to find not only a catalog of possible openings for different types of speeches but also an example of each taken from a successful presentation. When you have finished Wanda's book, you will regard speaking before an audience as something to anticipate with confidence and optimism.” —LINUS WRIGHT, Former Under Secretary, U.S. Department of Education, and Dallas Schools Superintendent “At last! A public speaking book written especially for Christian speakers. Wanda's book will serve as a trusted guide for the novice speaker as well as a valuable reference for the experienced speaker cast onto unfamiliar turf, such as appearing on television for the first time. Her examples of different genres of speeches, tailor-made for Christian audiences, provide a treasure trove of proven material.” —MAMIE MCCULLOUGH, Motivational Speaker and Author “I am so pleased that Wanda has written another book on speaking. Her previous book on the subject proved to be very popular at our conferences. We sold several hundred copies. Wanda has spoken at our conferences over the years and has always been a favorite among our people. I know this book will be well received. I am eager to begin offering it to our conference attendees.” —REG A. FORDER, Director of American Christian Writers “This book by Wanda Vassallo will be much appreciated and used by pastors and leaders in Christian churches, as well as by speakers in other contexts. Having served as a pastor for 28 years, as well as being a theological educator and a denominational executive, I am called on to speak in a variety of settings. Based on my experiences, I know that Wanda's book will be a priceless resource for the Christian leader. I recommend it without reservation.” —REV. RONALD E. VALLET, D. Min., Author, Adjunct Professor, McMaster Divinity College; Pastor, Fredonia Baptist Church, Fredonia, N.Y.; Minister for Stewardship and Mission Support, American Baptist Churches of New York “I taught Communications in a Christian University for many years and often used Jesus Christ as an example of the greatest of the communicators. Naturally, I directed my students to scriptures that verified that fact, but I never had a complete scriptural reference to Christ's sermons, teachings, speeches, and arguments. Now, Wanda Vassallo has included in her first-rate public speaking textbook, a chapter on “Jesus as a Speaker—Our Example!” This is a true blessing for the Christian speech teacher. It's all there in Dr. Vassallo's book—all the scripture references, the interpretations of those scriptures, and the speech “techniques” of Christ! It's all there in a textbook that goes on to tell the student and the teacher how best to present oneself before an audience. It's all there in one volume—a complete course in public speaking. A text like this with Jesus as the master speaker has long been needed. Now, it's available. Our prayers have been answered. Thank you, Dr. Wanda Vassallo!” —DR. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The Lamb’s Supper continues his thoughtful exploration of the complex relationship between the Bible and the Catholic liturgy in a revelatory work that will appeal to all readers. Scott Hahn has inspired millions of readers with his perceptive and unique view of Catholic theology and worship, becoming one of the most looked-to contemporary authorities in these areas. In Letter and Spirit, Hahn extends the message he began in The Lamb’s Supper, offering far-reaching and profound insights into what the Bible teaches us about living the spiritual life. For both Christians and Jews, the texts of the Bible are not simply records of historical events. They are intended, through public recitations in churches and synagogues, to bring listeners and readers into the sweeping story of redemption as it unfolds in the Bible. Focusing on the Catholic Mass, Hahn describes how God’s Word is meant to open our eyes to the life-giving power of the sacraments, and how the liturgy brings about the “actualization” of the saving truths of Scripture. Letter and Spirit is a stunningly original contribution to the field of biblical studies and will help Hahn’s many loyal and enthusiastic readers understand the relationship between the Bible and the Mass in a deeper way.

Book excerpt: "Jacques Ranciere has continually unsettled political discourse, particularly through his questioning of aesthetic "distributions of the sensible," which configure the limits of what can be seen and said. Widely recognized as a seminal work in Ranciere's corpus, the translation of which is long overdue, Mute Speech is an intellectual tour de force proposing a new framework for thinking about the history of art and literature. Ranciere argues that our current notion of "literature" is a relatively recent creation, having first appeared in the wake of the French Revolution and with the rise of Romanticism. In its rejection of the system of representational hierarchies that had constituted belles-letters, "literature" is founded upon a radical equivalence in which all things are possible expressions of the life of a people. With an analysis reaching back to Plato, Aristotle, the German Romantics, Vico, and Cervantes and concluding with brilliant readings of Flaubert, Mallarme, and Proust, Ranciere demonstrates the uncontrollable democratic impulse lying at the heart of literature's still-vital capacity for reinvention."--Publisher description.
