It allows us not only to verify existing models with high precision, but also to engineer novel systems with strong correlations and exotic topologies. Recent efforts have been made to include synthetic gauge fields and spin-orbit couplings into ultracold quantum gas experiments, which would enable us to study the quantum Hall effect, topological insulators as well as topological superfluids. This thesis will describe the experimental implementation of a new spin-orbit coupled system using pseudospin-1/2 in an optical superlattices, as well as progress towards detecting the stripe phase in this system. The first part of this thesis describes the development of a new apparatus for performing quantum simulations with sodium and lithium in optical lattices. A quantum simulation program is challenging itself, therefore having a stable platform for preparing quantum gases is essential for this task. We'll describe our development in reliable and efficient production of sodium Bose-Einstein condensates and lithium degenerate Fermi gases, as well as the characterization of our optical lattice system in a superfluid to a Mott-insulator quantum phase transition. The dynamics of a Bloch oscillation in a tilted lattice has also been studied as an important step towards the implementation of synthetic magnetic fields in our system. The second part of this thesis describes the experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling in a pseudospin-1/2 system using an optical superlattice. This new scheme uses orbital states in a tilted double-well as the pseudospins, therefore does not require near-resonant Raman light to flip the spins and promise longer lifetimes compared to earlier spin-orbit coupling experiments in atomic gases. It also features a robust miscible ground state with stationary density stripes, which is closely related to the concept of supersolidity in condensed matter systems. We'll present our experimental implementation of this new system, signatures of the resonant spin-orbit coupling, as well as progress toward experimental detection of the stripe phase via Bragg scattering. This pseudospin-1/2 system could also be used for simulating quantum magnetism,and potentially novel models with topological properties and Majorana excitations.

In this thesis, I present several experiments on realizing one-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in ultracold 23Na gases and the creation of a new form of matter with supersolid properties using interacting spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. The first part describes the realization of spin-orbit coupling in optical superlattices which consist of stack of pancakes of imbalanced double-wells. The orbital levels, individual pancakes, in an superlattice potential are used as pseudospin states. Spinorbit coupling was induced by two-photon Raman transition between the pseudospin states, and was experimentally characterized by the spin-dependent momentum structure from this dressing. The realization suppresses heating due to spontaneous emission. The system is highly miscible, allowing the study of novel phases in interacting spin-orbit coupled systems. Next, spin-orbit coupling was demonstrated by synchronizing a fast periodically modulating magnetic force with the Radio-Frequency (RF) pulses. The modulation effectively dressed the RF photons with tunable momentum. The consequent Doppler shifts for RF transitions were observed as velocity-selective spin flips. The scheme is equivalent to Floquet engineered one-dimensional spin-orbit coupling. Finally, I report experiments on creating a new form of matter, a supersolid, in ultracold quantum gases. An interacting spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in the stripe phase spontaneously breaks two continuous symmetries : the U(1) symmetry, observed as sharp interference peaks in momentum space, and the continuous translational symmetry, observed as a spontaneously formed density modulation. The density modulation is measured and characterized with Bragg scattering. A system spontaneously breaking these two symmetries is a crystal and a superfluid simultaneously, and is considered as a supersolid.

Book excerpt: The development of new technology for computing and renewable energy sources requires new insight into the physics governing state-of-the-art materials for these applications. To optimize the search for transistors and solar cells to supplant silicon, it is desirable to have them investigated in advance of their large-scale manufacture. One potentially fruitful avenue of investigation is the study of the electronic and optical properties of materials containing heavy atoms. Such atoms have a large spin-orbit coupling, which can be responsible for relatively exotic physics. Topological insulator materials such as $\Bi2Se3$ may have utility in the development of, for example, spin-tronics, in which information may be conveyed without the need for transporting electrical charge. The details of charges moving through a material, as well as a material absorbing light, require a suitable theoretical treatment. Within the purview of the quantum theory of solids, the technique of many-body perturbation theory gives researchers access to the means of calculating one-particle and two-particle excited states, the exact scenario needed to understand charged excitations and optical absorption, respectively. In this work, we further extend the ability of the many-body perturbation theory software package of BerkeleyGW to allow for more accurate description of solids containing heavy atoms. Namely, we investigate the properties of materials with large spin-orbit coupling by allowing for the treatment of two-component spinor wavefunctions. In the introduction, we review the physics of one- and two-particle excitations, entirely within a formalism allowing for the presence of spin-orbit coupling. In Chapter 2, we further discuss the implementation of spinor wavefunction functionality in BerkeleyGW and provide many test calculations using materials with varying strengths of spin-orbit coupling, with varying geometries, and including the metallic system of bulk gold. In Chapter 3, we present a calculation of the quasiparticle bandstructure of $\beta$-HgS as a further benchmark material, for which there requires elucidation of the bandstructure topology. We find very close agreement with experiment for both the effective mass and band gap. In Chapter 4, we present the bandstructure of the prototypical topological insulator $\Bi2Se3$, finding significant qualitative differences in the bandstructure from a quasiparticle calculation and the more readily available description from Density Functional Theory (DFT). Namely, we find that, in agreement with experiment, the conduction and valence bands are both nearly parabolic, in contrast to the well-known camel-back feature in the valence band of previous DFT calculations. Finally, in Chapter 5, we use DFT calculations to determine the ground-state geometry of Ir dimers adsorbed to graphene and confirm this geometry, that of a horizontal dimer across the so-called bridge sites, by comparing the resulting density of states to that measured by experiment. We find both have a strong central peak near the graphene Dirac point energy.

Book excerpt: In this work we build a new spin-orbit coupling experiment to observe the supersolidlike stripe phase. The phase diagram of a 1-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Bose- Einstein condensate shows several interesting phases including the stripe phase. We find the stripe phase particularly interesting because the condensate develops a density modulation in free space while remaining superfluid, which are the signature of supersolidity. In order to observe the stripe phase, we develop a novel spin-j basis which uses the orbital bands of an optical superlattice. Our choice of pseudo-spin basis allows the condensate components to remain miscible at high enough spin-orbit coupling strengths to observe the stripe phase. The superlattice constitutes a chain of spins which develop an antiferromagnetic spin texture and a density modulation at twice the lattice spacing. Breaking the discrete translational symmetry of the lattice while maintaining superfluidity indicates the formation of a lattice supersolid which we detected with Bragg scattering. Finally, the density modulation of the stripe phase is measured with a Bragg reflected beam and a camera setup to resolve the angular spread of the beam. An angle resolved, coherent Bragg beam is direct evidence of the stripe phase density modulation in free space. The formation of a free space density modulation in a superfluid Bose-Einstein condensate breaks the continuous spatial translation symmetry of space; fulfilling the definition of supersolidity. My primary contributions to the work include: controlling the superlattice, designing and building the Bragg detection scheme, some data collection and analysis.
