Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spherical Astronomy Still I publish this translation with diffidence, as I am well aware of its imperfection, and as I fear that, not to speak of the want of that finish of style which might have been expected from an English Translator, there will be found now and then some Germanisms, which are always liable to occur in a translation, espe cially when made by a German. I have discovered some such mistakes myself and have given them in the Table of Errors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brunnow's Spherical Astronomy The want of a Text-book for Spherical Astronomy has been long felt in the University of Cambridge, and indeed in all the Universities of the British Isles in which the Mathematical Sciences are cultivated. The treatise of Maddy, excellent as it was for the time when it was written, has long since ceased to be of much service for the instruction of students who are desirous of knowing the methods, both theoretical and practical, used by the astronomers of the present time; while that of Woodhouse, though it deals more practically with the operations pursued in fixed Oh servatories, is also comparatively useless, because it describes both instruments and methods which have long been 'oh solete. It has been, at least in part, a consequence of the want of a good treatise on practical astronomy, that this science has been far less cultivated in the University of Cambridge than it ought to have been, and that very few indeed of the students acquire any adequate acquaintance with the methods of the present time, as taught in the works of the great German and English astronomers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Spherical and Practical Astronomy The plan of the work embraces only those practical methods which can be carried out by the use of portable instruments. The fact that it is primarily intended for use in the class-room, and not for field use, will explain the omission of many details connected with the making of observations, which, while important, can only be learned by the actual handling of instruments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of Spherical Astronomy: With Its Applications to the Determination, and Reduction of Positions of the Fixed Stars The present volume is the first of a projected series having the double purpose of developing the elements of Practical and Theoretical Astronomy for the special student of the subject, and of serving as a handbook of convenient reference for the use of the working astronomer in applying methods and formulae. The plan of the series has been suggested by the author's experience as a teacher at the Johns Hopkins Uni versity, and as an investigator. The first has led him to the view that the wants of the student are best subserved by a quite elementary and condensed treatment of the subject, without any attempt to go far into details not admitting of immediate practical application. As an investigator he has frequently been impressed with the amount of time consumed in searching for the formulae and data, even of an elementary kind, which should be, in each case, best adapted to the work in hand. Download or read book A Treatise on Spherical Astronomy (Classic Reprint) written by Sir Robert Ball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Spherical Astronomy Astronomy on the one hand and the multitudinous details of Practical Astronomy on the other. I have aimed at providing for the student a book on Spherical Astronomy which is generally within the limits thus indicated, but I have not hesitated to transgress those limits now and then when there seemed to be good reason for doing so. For example I have just crossed the border of Dynamical Astronomy in Chapter VII., and in two concluding chapters I have so far entered on Practical Astronomy as to give some account of the fundamental geometrical principles of astronomical instruments. It has been assumed that the reader of this book is already acquainted with the main facts of Descriptive Astronomy. The reader is also expected to be familiar with the ordinary processes of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry and he should have at least an elementary knowledge of Analytic Geometry and Conic Sections as well as of the Differential and Integral Calculus. It need hardly be added that the student of any branch of Mathematical Astro nomy should also know the principles of Statics and Dynamics. As a guide to the student who is making his first acquaintance with Spherical Astronomy, I have affixed an asterisk to the titles of those articles which he may omit on a first reading; the articles so indicated being rather more advanced than the articles which precede or follow. Such articles as relate to the more important subjects are generally illustrated by exercises. In making a selection from the large amount of available material I have endeavoured to choose exercises which not only bear directly on the text, but also have some special astronomical or mathematical interest. It will be seen that the Tripos examinations at Cambridge and many. College examinations at Cambridge and elsewhere have provided a large proportion of the exercises. I have also obtained exercises from many other sources which are duly indicated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Studies in Spherical and Practical Astronomy (Classic Reprint) written by George C. Comstock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Spherical and Practical Astronomy A method of reduction which is the same for both types of level, and which is in most cases more convenient than the above, is as follows: In the square array of numbers which constitute the observed readings of the level, take the diagonal differences. The mean of the two diagonal differences is the inclination of the line in half divisions of the level. That end of the line is the higher which is ad jacent to the greatest single reading. If the level readings have been correctly made the two diagonal differences will be the same, and the reduction thus serves as a check upon the accuracy of the record. Thus, from the readings given above, we see at a glance that in the first case 2 half divisions and the readings have been correctly made. In the second case z half divisions and there is a discrepancy of div. In the readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Practical and Spherical Astronomy written by Robert Main and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical and Spherical Astronomy: For the Use Chiefly of Students in the Universities With regard to arrangement, that has been followed which appeared the most logical, and which would suggest itself most naturally to a person desirous of pursuing the study of Prac tical Astronomy. After the elementary notions of the planes of reference, as deduced from diurnal and annual phenomena, and a statement of the principal terms or definitions of the science, the next step would obviously be to explain the methods and to describe the instruments by means of which the positions of celestial objects can be observed with reference to these planes; and then to investigate the method of trans forming from any system of cc-ordinates or planes of reference to any others. Next in order would come the consideration of the most obvious of the phenomena arising from the earth's diurnal rotation and annual motion; and that of the sensible measures of time as fundamentally connected with these phe nomena. After this would follow the various corrections which are necessary to determine for ultimate use the places of theheavenly bodies as freed from all the errors (including those arising from the variations of the planes of reference) which would make their observed places different as observed at differ ent stations and at different times. And, lastly, would follow the consideration of the orbits described by the planets, as deduced from observation, with such specific notices of the peculiarities of particular planets as admit of mathematical treatment, and as belong to the subject of Practical Astronomy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Astronomy, Spherical and Physical: With Astronomical Problems, and Solar, Lunar, and Other Astronomical Tables The Astronomical Problems in Part III. Remain substantially the same as in the last edition. The table of Latitudes and Longitudes of Places, the tables of the Planetary Elements, and the table of the Mean Places of Fixed Stars, have been replaced by others that are more accurate and more extended. The tables of the Sun's and Moon's Epochs have been extended to 1884. Many new illustrative figures, and several plates of telescopic appearances, have been added. One of the most important of the special improvements intro duced consists in the adoption of the new and more accurate determination of the Sun's parallax, and mean distance from the earth. This is now generally adopted, as one evidence of which may be mentioned its introduction into the computations of the English Nautical Almanac for 1870. It brings with it amore accurate determination of the distances of all the planets from the Sun, and of the satellites from their primaries, and the dimensions and densities of the planets. The present is the first American treatise in which this important advance in exact astronomical science has been incorporated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spherical Astronomy During my connection with the University of Michigan as Professor of Astronomy I felt very much the want of a book written in the English language, to which I might refer the students attending my lectures, and it seems that the same want was felt by other Professors, as I heard very frequently the wish expressed, that I should publish an English Edition of my Spherical Astronomy, and thus relieve this want at least for one important branch of Astronomy. However while I was in America I never found leisure to undertake this translation, although the arrangements for it were made with the Publishers already at the time of the publication of the Second German Edition. In the mean time an excellent translation of a part of the book was published in England by the Rev. R.Main; but still it seemed to me desirable to have the entire work translated, especially as the Second Edition had been considerably enlarged.
