Book Synopsis Six Skills by Age Six by : Anna Foote
Download or read book Six Skills by Age Six written by Anna Foote and published by Libraries Unlimited. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-stop guide to nurturing six core early literacy skills at your library also offers practical tips for sharing these skills with parents, teachers, and other caregivers so they can institute them in playgroups, in school, or at home. Though libraries have been presenting early literacy activities for decades, library staff may lack an in-depth understanding of early literacy skills and their place in preparing children for a lifetime of learning. Based on the program "6 by 6: Ready to Read," this book is chock full of practical, everyday ideas on how you can foster the six core early literacy skills children should ideally acquire by age six. The volume begins by introducing the importance of early literacy and explaining how to start or expand an early literacy program in your library, regardless of its size. Subsequent chapters explore the six core skills and offer suggestions on how to showcase them in library programs and services. The book also includes activities that relate to each skill, suggests books that are especially useful in exploring each skill, and tells you how to create early literacy spaces. Three sets of storytime plans—one each for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers—are presented as well. Written primarily for public librarians and library staff, this guide will also be informative for parents and for educators who work with young girls and boys.
Download or read book Building Blocks written by Sharon Snow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Librarians can stay relevant in the twenty-first century when they build on those areas where they have excelled. Service to children is one of those, and a hot topic is emergent literacy, the earliest phases of literacy development. Because parents are a child's first teacher, they need to understand that children who enter school with a larger vocabulary are more likely to succeed in school and that they can offer experiences for their pre-school children to prepare them for school. This book provides six sessions for a children's librarian to use to introduce literacy skills to parents of preschool children. These sessions teach parents how to give their child an opportunity to explore and experience new things. Designed to be conducted in two simultaneous units, one for parents and one for children, handouts and activities are included. These are especially helpful for helping parents who will be able to make most of the teaching devices rather than purchasing expensive commercial items. Book Synopsis Building Early Literacy Pre-Reading Skills at Home by : Adrianna Mabrie
Download or read book Building Early Literacy Pre-Reading Skills at Home written by Adrianna Mabrie and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project addressed the need for parental and family support in providing a language-rich home environment that promotes critical early literacy pre-reading skills that research has identified as predictors of future reading achievement. Parents and caregivers of children from infancy through age five have a unique opportunity to incorporate various activities that build oral language, phonological and phonemic awareness, concepts about print, and alphabetic knowledge. Through interactions ranging from reading books, singing, playing with sounds, talking, and bringing attention to words and letters in print, parents and caregivers can begin building their child's reading brain before they enter school. This project includes an early literacy website that houses tips, activities, digital resources, and links to evidence-based online resources. This website consists of a free resource library with a downloadable parent/family handbook with information and activities parents can use at home to build early literacy skills. In addition, there are two digital literacy kits that contain over one hundred pages of resources and materials that parents can print and use at home with their children; as a result, all stakeholders benefit when teachers proactively build the home-school connection early in a child's development.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Family Literacy by : Barbara Hanna Wasik
Download or read book Handbook of Family Literacy written by Barbara Hanna Wasik and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging field of family literacy, which cuts across early childhood education, early literacy development, parent education, adult education, and parent-child literacy interactions, has never had a comprehensive volume that pulls together and integrates its many interacting components. That is the mission of this handbook. It provides scholars, students, policymakers, and practitioners (both inside and outside the field) with an invaluable snapshot of its current boundaries and rapidly growing content. With contributions from experts in each of its component fields, it provides an up-to-date picture of existing family literacy programs, of the research and theories that guide these programs, of current issues, and of likely future directions. Key features of this outstanding new book include the following: *Comprehensive--Whereas many books deal with various components of this broad and loosely coupled field, until now there has never been a book that profiles and integrates its overlapping component fields. *Recommendations for Practice--Information essential to the development of curriculum and instructional strategies is integrated throughout the book. Practical guidance is offered in such diverse and intersecting areas as early literacy, the role of literature and storybook reading in literacy learning, adult learning needs and strategies, and professional development. *Cultural and Family Influences--The book examines cultural and family influences on literacy practices and provides effective ways of responding to family diversity, including the needs of bilingual and immigrant participants. *Program Implementation--Program recommendations cover such distinct topics as integrating the curriculum, enriching early childhood classrooms, enhancing parent-child literacy interactions, and coordinating with other agencies. *Assessment--To promote future research and evaluation, attention has been focused on ways of assessing children, adults, the educational setting, and implementation strategies. This book is intended for professionals (directors and staff) and graduate students in the areas of family literacy, early childhood education, child development, parenting, and adult education, as well as researchers and policymakers in child development and family literacy.
Book Synopsis BRINGING EARLY LITERACY RESEARCH TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY by : Leigh Ann McCormack
Download or read book BRINGING EARLY LITERACY RESEARCH TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY written by Leigh Ann McCormack and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public libraries are a free community resource available to families in communities across the United States. The Every Child Ready to Read Program (ECRR) is currently the only known research-based early literacy parent initiative available for public libraries to use. This current study presents the findings of a case study that included both librarian and parent interviews to explore how one suburban library utilized the ECRR program. Building upon current ECRR research, the study explores how librarians and parents utilized library storytimes. The key findings of the study include the discovery that the two librarians differed substantially in their implementation of the ECRR program, with one librarian being more willing to offer instruction to parents while the other librarian not directly wanting this as her role. One possible reason for this difference involves the different educational background and specific job duties of each librarian. In regards to parents, the study found that parents utilized library storytimes largely for social reasons for both themselves and their child. Furthermore, new mothers and Spanish-speaking mothers showed a special appreciation for storytimes, in that both attended storytimes for personal guidance. In light of parent-school trust literature, the library in the current study appeared as a place to establish and maintain trusting partnerships with parents. Implications of ECRR are discussed, as well as recommendations for further research.
Book Synopsis Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 by : National Research Council
Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
