Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Platform: Orations on Total Abstinence and Prohibition, Especially Adapted for Prize Contests, Public Meetings, Social Gatherings, Etc Much care has been given to the selection of material, which has been culled from the speeches of the leading advocates of Temperance, widely known for their eloquence and ability; and in quite a number of cases speeches have been written especially for this volume. The effort has been to furnish a collection as varied as pos sible, presenting the fundamental principles of the Temperance Reform, giving urgent pleas for personal temperance and Total Abstinence as the foundation-stone and bed-rock of all true Temperance Reform, as well as appeals and arguments for the absolute prohibition of the liquor traffic. Book excerpt: Drink, in the minds of antebellum temperance reformers, represented the threat of an increasingly urban, industrial world. Contrasting the drunkards' lack of restraint with their own thrift and sobriety, these members of the emerging middle class lay claim to respectability, virtue, and moral leadership. As they sought to legitimate their own authority, reformers also employed temperance literature to propagate middle-class ideas about the nature of women and their role as guardians of the home. Stories of women as innocent victims and loving saviors filled temperance literature. Ministers, novelists, and journalists portrayed wives beaten by drunken husbands; poets and songwriters extolled mothers and sisters who rescued men from demon drink. Yet a strand of misogyny also ran through temperance ideology. Denunciation of women as causes of intemperance and snares for men, and celebration of women's victimization often coexisted with a more positive assessment of women's role in the emerging middle class. Unless a woman remained vigilant, she too might succumb to drink, and reformers had very little sympathy for such a fallen angel. By examining the contradictory images of women employed by the antebellum temperance movement, Scott Martin reveals the reformers' commitment not only to social betterment but also to middle-class interests and a particular gender ideology. Martin explores the reasons why more men than women drank, the ways in which society dealt with women who neglected familial and social obligations to become drunkards, and the consequences of women's failure to eradicate male drunkenness.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poison Problem: Or the Cause and Cure of Intemperance The pious belief that the excess of every social evil tends to insure its abolition, seems, indeed, to have been almost disproved by the history of the alcohol habit. When the yoke of despots had made deliver ance more desirable than life itself, despotism had reached the term of its power. When the rule of priests had made the hatred of shams burn hotter than the fire of the stake, no J esuitical intrigues could prevent the triumph of the Protestant revolt. But, though the evil of intemperance has long been recog nized as the blighting curse of modern civilization, the sore-felt need of relief seems thus far to have re vealed no remedy. In spite of all our philanthropists have done to stem or de ect the current, the guelle, the dire poison-fountain of social life, has over owed its ancient banks, and threatens to submerge the sanitaria of the primitive highlands. In coun tries of Christendom where the ebb of all other in dustries has enforced a degree of frugality unknown to the revival periods of medimval asceticism, the liquor traffic still swells the tide of revenue and dis ease. Remedy after remedy has been proposed, tested, and changed for another, doomed to a similar failure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperance Movement: Or the Conflict Between Man and Alcohol The conflict between man and alcohol is as old as civiliza tion, more destructive than any other form of warfare, and as fierce to-day as at any time since the beginning. It is not an exaggeration to say that no other evil known in human history has been of such vast proportions and lamentable consequences as that of alcoholic intemperance. As the whole past of the race has been cursed by it, so its whole future is threatened with increasing calamity, unless there be a period put to its ravages. It is a peculiarity of this curse that it is developed by civilization, and then, like the parricide, it destroys the source of its own life. But although alcohol is his special foe, it by no means confines its dagger and chalice to civilized man. Combining with the spirit of a mercenary commerce, this active essence of evil is hunting and extirpating the weaker races and indigenous populations of uncivilized countries from the face of the earth. The object of this book is, if possible, to arrest the atten tion of the American, if of no other people; to place before them the leading facts which enter into the great debate now pending on our own and the European continents, and to assist man, however feebly, in this great struggle with alcohol for his life. Their case requires no consideration of the kind we are giving to the other questions to night. The time has entirely passed when we need discuss the matter of drunkenness. When I say that we have no question with the drunkard, I designate by that term the man who occasionally allows his senses to be lost entirely, and whose reason has gone because he has been taking alcoholic liquor; I will take that to be the sign of drunkenness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prohibition Melodist: To Which Is Added the Water Fairies (a Temperance Cantata) The grand work of the temperance reformation is still before, not far, we trust, but still before. This is not the time for those who labor in this cause to lay their weapons down. The legions of the enemy are still in the field, as active, as vigilant, as merciless as ever. Equal activity and vigilance should be theirs who are fighting the battle for the home, for God, and for the peace and happiness of the land. Theirs it is to con tinne the work of educating public sentiment on the drink question; theirs itis to continue the work of besieging the legislative halls of the States and the nation for more effective and repressive temperance laws; theirs it is to take advantage wherever possible of the existing laws to bar out and crush out the rum traffic; theirs it is to work and pray and pray and work, to he laboring in season and out of season for the complete and final overthrow of the liquor power in all the nation.
