Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches in England and IndiaAnglo-indian politics, these Speeches cannot but be enii uently interesting, useful and instructive to the English statesman and the Indian aspirant after political fame. In the Durbar Speeches we see lord mayo in every line the frank and courteous and enlightened gentleman, but at the same time, the strong and worthy representative of the Queen and the unmistakeable Ruler of the Empire. Every Na tive Prince who met him, looked upgn lord mayo as the ideal of an English Viceroy. They all felt instinctively that thev could place perfect confidence' in everything that he told them, and their respect, I ought rather to say, their rev ei.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches on India: Delivered by Lord Curzon of Kedleston, Viceroy and Governor-General of India, While in England in July August, 1904 By a law which was designed for different times, and which, in my opinion, is now obsolete, no Viceroy of India can leave India for England, whatever the urgency, public or private, without vacating his office and so it is that a man may be absent, as I have been, from his country for an unbroken period of five and a half years without sight or sound of home. During his long exile the weight and isolation of his great post tell heavily upon him. Fatigue of body and spirit often press him down; the volume of work that he has to discharge is such as no man who has not undertaken it can well imagine. You may judge, therefore, what a reward - I had almost said, what a tonic to body and soul - is such a reception as this to such a man; how his heart warms within him at the sympathetic recognition of his countrymen, and how fresh courage and spirit are infused into him to go forth again and renew his task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Speeches: 1907 1909 A signal transaction is now taking place in the course of Indian polity. These speeches, with no rhetorical pretensions, contain some of the just, prudent, and necessary points and considerations, that have guided this transaction, and helped to secure for it the sanction of Parliament. The too limited public that follows Indian affairs with coherent attention, may find this small sheaf of speeches, revised as they have been, to be of passing use. Three cardinal State-papers have been appended. They mark the spirit of British rule in India, at three successive stages, for three generations past; and bear directly upon what is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Substance of the Speeches of William Wilberforce, Esq.: On the Clause in the East-India Bill, for Promoting the Religious Instruction and Moral Improvement of the Natives of the British Dominions in India The Writer of the following pages has been induced to publish them, partly by a wish that his sentiments on the important subject of them, and the premises which led him to the conclusions which he has formed, should not be misunderstood; and partly, he confesses, because he finds, with concern, that notwithstanding all the light which has been thrown on the moral state of the natives of India, many respectable and intelligent men still entertain very mistaken notions on that great question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches, Vol. 2: 1891-1894 Another favourite thesis upon these occasions is that the affairs of the world would have come to a stop long ago but for the part taken in their management by your fellow countrymen. (cheers and laughter.) That doctrine is one to which, within reasonable limits, I am perfectly ready to subscribe, and, if it holds good anywhere, it cer tainly hos good in India. It would be an interesting task to consider the sheet upon the history of India which might have been produced if the Scotch ingredient had been withdrawn from amongst those who had the making of the land we live in. To pursue such an inquiry into the regions of history would carry me altogether beyond the limits Of an after-dinner speech. Moreover, it would probably be difficult to make researches in this direction, even if they were limited to the present day, 'without giving Offence to the susceptibilities of those who have had the misfortune to be born in less favoured parts of the British Islands (cheers and laughter.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Writings of Sir William Wedderburn It is with feelings of inexpressible sorrow that I attempt to pen this little note. About the middle of November 1916, I wrote to Sir William Wedderburn requesting him to accord permission to me to bring out a volume of his Speeches and Writings. He was good enough to comply with my request and also to help me in the selection of the matter. But for the exigencies of business this volume should have been out by the end of last year, as originally announced, and it is to me nothing short of a misfortune that I have been denied the privilege of presenting him with a copy of this book. In my letter to Sir William regarding the selection of matter for his speeches and writings, I suggested among other things, the need for giving prominence to his many contributions on the condition of the Indian raiyat, as I knew from personal conversations and correspondence, which it was my inestimable privilege to have with him, how deeply interested he was in the improvement of the economic condition of the Indian raiyats. It is sad to recall the following extract from his letter dated the 7th January, 1917: - I am very glad that you will give prominence to the Famine Union and the proposed Enquiry into the economic condition of the villages, as the woes of the Indian raiyat have been from the very beginning the stimulus which has kept me tied to the labouring oar of Indian Reform. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India's True Representatives: Being a Speech Delivered in 1895 in Bombay In the days when Natives of India were rare in England, it sometimes happened that people utterly unknown and of no position were received and were able to pass themselves off in social circles for princes and rajas and nawabs, on the strength of a little tinsel, a gold-embroidered cap, a satin coat, or a little jewellery, such as even loafers in Indian Bazaars affect in Indian towns. The phenomenon is no longer possible in Society owing to the increased numbers of natives going to England but it seems that there is still room for it in political circles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Speeches The Speeches of Phillips are now, for the first time, offered to the world in an authentic form. So far as his exertions have been hitherto developed, his admirers, and they are innumerable, must admit, that the text of this volume is an acknowledged reference, to which future criticism may fairly resort, and from which his friends must deduce any title which the speaker may have created to the character of an orator. The interests of his reputation impose no necessity of denying many of those imperfections which have been imputed to these productions. The value of all human exertion is comparative; and positive excellence is but a flattering designation, even of the best products of industry and mind. There is, perhaps, but one way by which we could avoid all possible defects, and that is, by avoiding all possible exertion.
