Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard C. Atkinson’s eight-year tenure as president of the University of California (1995–2003) reflected the major issues facing California itself: the state’s emergence as the world’s leading knowledge-based economy and the rapidly expanding size and diversity of its population. As this selection of President Atkinson’s speeches and papers reveals, his administration was marked by innovative approaches that deliberately shaped U.C.’s role in this changing California. These writings tell the story of the national controversy over the SAT and Atkinson’s successful challenge to the dominance of the seventy-five-year-old college entrance examination. They also highlight other issues with national significance: U.C.’s experiments with race-neutral admissions programs; the challenges facing academic libraries and the University’s pioneering activities with the California Digital Library; and the University’s involvement in new paradigms of industry-university research. Together, these speeches and papers open a window on an eventful period in the history of the nation’s leading public research university and the history of American higher education.

Book excerpt: This insightful, rewarding and highly readable volume is a generous selection of the best of Dyson Heydon's speeches and papers. Most have a legal theme, although the book is of broader interest. As the Hon Ian Callinan observes in his foreword, in these papers the author "combines the arts of the essayist, historian, orator, obituarist, reviewer, critic, teacher and advocate".The Honourable J D Heydon AC QC was a Rhodes Scholar for New South Wales, elected Dean of the University of Sydney Law School (aged 34), practised as a barrister (including as Queen's Counsel after practising as a junior for a mere 8 years), before being appointed a Judge of Appeal and Justice of the High Court. He was the Commissioner of the Royal Commission into Trade Union Governance and Corruption in 2014-2015."Any reader of the Papers will be struck by the depth and width of the author's scholarship. There is not one of the Papers that is not rich in unaffected literary, historical and legal allusion. They are a mine of interesting facts and intelligent fresh insights" (from the Foreword by Ian Callinan). From the Book Launch, 15 August 2018:The Hon Tom Bathurst AC, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales "There is much to say about Dyson Heydon's achievements to date. This is attested to not just by the 800 pages comprising this book, but the fact that it represents a mere drop in the ocean of legal writing that Dyson has contributed both to this country and abroad. ... To put it simply, this book stands out because of the breadth of the subjects the author has covered, and most extraordinarily, the depth to which he covers them. It reveals unparalleled ability in innumerable subjects including criminal, constitutional and comparative law. It also shows his ability to reflect deeply on the lives, habits and peculiarities of others, manifesting an understanding not just of the law, but of people - which some might say is a rare phenomenon in a lawyer." Read Launch Speech...Mr Rodney Cavalier AO "Each chapter is devoted in good measure to a love of words - composing and arranging, sometimes meandering into tangents characteristic of an address, but always driving the thesis with purpose. The register does not matter: speaking, writing, conversation, advocacy, dissertation, book, chapter, judgment, letter. Whimsy or solemn. Dyson loves words. For that reason, he loves books (every element of them) and he loves the private library, the essential statement of a thinking person. What he admires is not secret, they permeate the consideration of every profile, living and dead - writing and scholarship, proficiency in other languages, war service, assuming leadership." Book excerpt: "David Kaye's book is crucial to understanding the tactics, rhetoric and stakes in one of the most consequential free speech debates in human history." -- Cory Doctorow, author of Radicalized, Walkaway and Little Brother The internet was designed to be a kind of free-speech paradise, but a lot of the material on it turned out to incite violence, spread untruth, and promote hate. Over the years, three American behemoths--Facebook, YouTube and Twitter--became the way most of the world experiences the internet, and therefore the conveyors of much of its disturbing material. What should be done about this enormous problem? Should the giant social media platforms police the content themselves, as is the norm in the U.S., or should governments and international organizations regulate the internet, as many are demanding in Europe? How do we keep from helping authoritarian regimes to censor all criticisms of themselves? David Kaye, who serves as the United Nations' special rapporteur on free expression, has been has been at the center of the discussions of these issues for years. He takes us behind the scenes, from Facebook's "mini-legislative" meetings, to the European Commission's closed-door negotiations, and introduces us to journalists, activists, and content moderators whose stories bring clarity and urgency to the topic of censorship. Speech Police is the most comprehensive and insightful treatment of the subject thus far, and reminds us of the importance of maintaining the internet's original commitment to free speech, free of any company's or government's absolute control, while finding ways to modulate its worst aspects.

Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.

Book excerpt: The Internet has impacted on the media in many crucial ways. Practices and laws have evolved, and the Internet has even exerted an existential influence over the format and viability of contemporary media outlets. In order to explore this important and on-going interaction, the Fifth Free Speech Discussion Forum assembled in London in 2012, involving a combination of leading scholars and practicing lawyers from North America and Europe. The papers in this collection therefore reflect a rich range of jurisdictions and experiences, with comparative approaches strongly to the fore. Some chapters deal directly with issues around the battles for survival of the established print and broadcast media in an Internet age. The Internet is also having profound effects on the delivery of mass free speech by forcing us to reconsider new approaches to legal designs and practices, especially within the jurisprudence of privacy, defamation, obscenity, and counter-terrorism. At the same time, the Internet must be equally acknowledged as offering considerable advantages for the production and publication of free speech by opening sources of information and channels of communication. Those who ignore the Internet's transformative capacity in the development of media law invite the fate of early redundancy or easy evasion. Thus, the chapters in this book offer original and authoritative insights into core debates around the interactions between the Internet, media, and law.

Book Synopsis OK by : Allan Metcalf

Download or read book OK written by Allan Metcalf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said to be the most frequently spoken (or typed) word on the planet, more common than an infant's first word ma or the ever-present beverage Coke. It was even the first word spoken on the moon. It is "OK"--the most ubiquitous and invisible of American expressions, one used countless times every day. Yet few of us know the hidden history of OK--how it was coined, what it stood for, and the amazing extent of its influence. Allan Metcalf, a renowned popular writer on language, here traces the evolution of America's most popular word, writing with brevity and wit, and ranging across American history with colorful portraits of the nooks and crannies in which OK survived and prospered. He describes how OK was born as a lame joke in a newspaper article in 1839--used as a supposedly humorous abbreviation for "oll korrect" (ie, "all correct")--but should have died a quick death, as most clever coinages do. But OK was swept along in a nineteenth-century fad for abbreviations, was appropriated by a presidential campaign (one of the candidates being called "Old Kinderhook"), and finally was picked up by operators of the telegraph. Over the next century and a half, it established a firm toehold in the American lexicon, and eventually became embedded in pop culture, from the "I'm OK, You're OK" of 1970's transactional analysis, to Ned Flanders' absurd "Okeley Dokeley!" Indeed, OK became emblematic of a uniquely American attitude, and is one of our most successful global exports. "An appealing and informative history of OK." --Washington Post Book World "After reading Metcalf's book, it's easy to accept his claim that OK is 'America's greatest word.'" --Erin McKean, Boston Globe "Entertaininga treat for logophiles." --Kirkus Reviews "Metcalf makes you acutely aware of how ubiquitous and vital the word has become." --Jeremy McCarter, Newsweek
